Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0-10 mins

Breath and Warm Curves

We open unhurried, letting slow spirals through the spine, hips and shoulders wake the body while the breathing lengthens and the mind lets go of the day. Warmth and awareness are the goal, since here the impulse behind a movement carries as much weight as the outline it draws.

10-20 mins

Meeting the Floor

Instead of treating the ground as somewhere to escape, we make friends with it — descending, spiralling low and pressing back up while the weight flows through the joints without a jolt. Comfort at floor level is the quiet key that later makes the larger, faster material feel almost weightless.

20-35 mins

Setting It Turning

Movement now lifts off its spot and roams, circling and revolving through the space like a phrase drawn around the Camera's own axis. We sketch a short travelling passage and iron out the joins so each impulse hands you cleanly into the next with no pause.

35-50 mins

Light and Shade

The richest stretch of the hour lives here, where the sequence discovers its swells and suspensions, its abrupt halts and its long exhales. Your own intention gets to tint every accent, so one passage can whisper on the first run and blaze on the second.

50-60 mins

Full Turn and Release

With the track playing we ride the entire sequence several times over, chasing the feeling of it rather than the numbers, before easing down into long stretches. You step back out into Oxford unknotted, clear-headed and holding a phrase that arrived from somewhere genuine.

About Contemporary Classes in Oxford

Contemporary is the branch of dance that trades fixed, decorative shapes for movement driven by breath, weight and the body's own momentum. You learn to pour yourself down into the floor and rebound off it, to let one shape dissolve into the next with no visible join, and to colour a phrase so it reads as feeling rather than a tidy count. It grew out of classical and modern training and then loosened every rule, which is why it rewards honesty and texture far more than a spotless line.

Oxford hands the form a geometry all its own. Close to the central sessions we run around George Street and Gloucester Green, the Radcliffe Camera turns in a perfect circle — Britain's first round library, all revolving stone and answering curves — and we borrow that rotunda purely as a movement idea: rings that rotate, phrases that call and respond, a group orbiting one shared centre before scattering across the floor. The nearby Old Fire Station is the city's genuine open-to-all arts hub for work like this, and our contemporary classes in Oxford take that inclusive, cross-style spirit as a cue, with no claim of access to or partnership with it.

You can arrive with no background whatever and nothing more than comfortable clothes. Material is introduced gradually and the whole room sets the tempo together, so someone stepping in for the very first time sits easily alongside a dancer coming back after years away. Bare feet or gripped socks work best for the floor-based work, paired with soft layers that let you bend, twist and reach. Your studio is confirmed the moment you book, and every session costs a flat £8 — nothing to enrol on, no membership card, and no charges lurking anywhere in the small print.

Why Choose Contemporary in Oxford?

Movement That Speaks

Where words run out, contemporary offers another way to say it, free of any grade breathing down your neck. Many dancers find this the single hour each week when a crowded mind settles and the day's tightness quietly leaves through the body.

Quietly Demanding

Every descent, every controlled rise and every metre of ground covered forges real power through the middle, spine and legs, while the reaching keeps you supple and long. Its gentle, flowing look is a very effective disguise for how much it actually asks of you.

A Real Unwind

With its patient breathing and inward attention, the class carries a calm, almost meditative undertow that regulars come to guard jealously. You turn up frazzled from the day and walk out noticeably lighter.

The Root System

The sense of weight, timing and articulation grown in here feeds directly into lyrical, jazz, heels and commercial styles. Countless dancers discover contemporary is the hidden ingredient that makes everything else on the timetable sharper and bolder.

Your Contemporary Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1-3

At Home on the Ground

Trusting Your Weight

Early on the emphasis falls on descending and rising with real control and letting the floor take your weight, because ease down low frees everything above it. The steps stay deliberately few, so your attention rests on assurance rather than counts.

What to Bring

Reach for soft, pliable layers you can twist and fold inside, danced barefoot or in gripped socks. Pack water and leave the trainers behind, since so much of the work unfolds in direct contact with the ground.

Weeks 4-9

Making It Travel

Connecting the Pieces

Separate movements begin flowing into travelling phrases, and you grow the spatial instinct to send momentum sweeping across the whole studio rather than staying anchored to a single patch of floor.

Smoothing the Joins

We work hardest on the pivots where one shape turns into another, drilling them until the sequence sheds its stop-start feel and rolls out like one continuous arc winding toward its open close.

Weeks 10-16

Dancing With Meaning

Your Own Shading

Beyond the choreography you begin selecting your own dynamics, so an identical phrase can land soft or ferocious depending on how you paint it. This is the point where the dancing turns recognisably yours.

Riding the Music

We widen your dialogue with the track — leaning into it, trailing behind it, breathing in its silences — which is precisely what raises a phrase from merely accurate to something an onlooker can feel in their chest.

Beyond

Finding Your Own Voice

Inventing Movement

In time you start improvising with freedom and shaping material stamped with your own signature. The form is ceilingless — the deeper you travel, the more of it seems to unfold ahead.

Making Work Together

Contemporary sits perfectly with shared and private sessions. If you would like to devise a piece with friends for a milestone or a project, bring the concept and we will construct a session around it.

Contemporary in Oxford FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

I have never set foot in a dance class — is that okay? +

More than okay — it is the norm here. New material always arrives in bite-sized pieces at a shared, unhurried tempo, so a first-timer never feels stranded. And because there is quieter nuance woven through every phrase, seasoned dancers keep unearthing detail to sharpen too.

What separates contemporary from other styles? +

It is expressive modern dance built on weight, breath and a willingness to surrender to the floor. Rooted in classical and modern technique, it then loosens the rulebook — spiralling, rolling, releasing and building momentum to carry an emotion rather than freeze in a shape.

Is there any special kit I should sort out first? +

Nothing beyond soft, flexible layers you can twist and reach in, danced barefoot or in gripped socks, plus water to hand. No specialist equipment applies, and as a fair slice of the hour happens down at ground level, freedom of movement is all that truly matters.

Whereabouts in Oxford do the sessions happen? +

The central classes cluster around George Street and Gloucester Green, with an East Oxford alternative nearer Cowley Road and Jericho, each confirmed once you book. Where it works better for a group, we will travel to you anywhere across Oxford and Oxfordshire. Our patch stays Oxford itself, not separate towns like Abingdon, Kidlington, Bicester or Witney.

What am I paying per class? +

A flat £8 per drop-in, settled one session at a time. Nothing to enrol on, no advance block to purchase and no contract — turn up on the weeks that fit around your life and skip the ones that do not.

Will it genuinely get me moving? +

Far more than it looks. The weighted work, the sustained control and the constant covering of ground build honest strength and raise the heart rate, yet the soft, flowing surface neatly conceals just how much effort you are putting in.

I am really not flexible — does that count me out? +

Not in the least, and it is the fear we hear most often. Range unlocks naturally through the weekly reaching and lengthening; you always operate inside your own boundaries, and those boundaries quietly widen as the weeks accumulate.

Have I left it too late age-wise? +

Adult classes span 17 to 75, and contemporary fits a broad age range unusually well because it leans on weight and control rather than sheer athleticism. From first minute to last, you dance to the body you have.

Can a group of us reserve a session of our own? +

Gladly. Contemporary is a natural home for private and collaborative work — for an occasion, a creative project or simply friends wanting to explore together. Share your idea and we will craft a session to fit it.
