Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm-up with a beat
We loosen up to an upbeat track, waking the shoulders, wrists and knees, because Bollywood asks the whole body to join in from the first count.
Hands and expression
Time on the hand gestures and the bright, outward expression that define the style — the shapes that turn a movement into a story.
The footwork and bounce
We drill the springy, rhythmic footwork and the signature bounce, so your legs and your grin arrive on the beat together.
Building the routine
The steps stack into a short choreography set to a well-known track, adding a little each week until a full number takes shape.
Full-out run
We dance the whole thing through at tempo, arms high and energy up, which is exactly the joyful chaos Bollywood is built for.
About Bollywood Classes in Lancaster
Bollywood dance is the exuberant film style of Indian cinema — a joyful fusion of classical Indian form, folk energy and modern pop, stitched together into big, expressive routines. Our Lancaster beginners' class delivers all of that fun without any of the intimidation: you need not know a single Hindi lyric or classical position to walk in and have a brilliant time.
Lancaster is a university city with a genuinely mixed, international community, and Bollywood is a natural fit for it — a style that pulls a whole room together whatever their background, age or experience. Our class leans into that spirit: expressive, high-energy and welcoming, as good for a group of friends after something different as it is for anyone who grew up loving the films.
We run from a central studio around Market Square and Church Street, in the old town near the castle and the Priory, with a second space by St George's Quay on the Lune. Dancers travel in from Scotforth, Bowerham, Hala and the Bailrigg campus; the mainline station is a short walk from the centre, and with no tram in Lancaster it is buses, trains or a walk in.

Why Choose Bollywood in Lancaster?
A proper cardio hit
The pace and full-body movement make a Bollywood class a genuine workout that never feels like exercise, because you are too busy enjoying it.
Pure mood lift
It is almost impossible to leave a Bollywood class in a bad mood — the music, the expression and the sheer energy are built to make you smile.
A real routine to take away
Rather than loose steps, you build a full choreography to a track you know, so you finish with something you can actually perform.
£8, no experience needed
Eight pounds on the night, no background required and nothing to buy — just clothes you can move in and a willingness to go for it.
Your Bollywood Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
First few weeks
The basic vocabulary
You pick up the core steps, the bounce and a handful of signature hand shapes, enough to follow along and feel part of it fast.
Losing the self-consciousness
Bollywood is unapologetically big, and within a couple of weeks the expression stops feeling silly and starts feeling brilliant.
A month or two in
Hands and feet together
The gestures and footwork start syncing, so your upper and lower body finally tell the same story at the same time.
Catching the rhythm
The bouncy, syncopated timing settles in, and you stop chasing the beat and start landing on it.
Into a term
A full number takes shape
The weekly steps accumulate into a complete routine you can dance from top to bottom to a track you love.
Performing outward
You learn to project the expression to a room rather than keeping it to yourself, which is what makes the style land.
Further on
Confident and full-out
You dance the whole choreography at full energy without watching the person in front, which is a genuinely great feeling.
More to explore
Some dancers chase the classical or folk roots deeper; others bring the styling to a belly dance or heels class in town.
Bollywood in Lancaster FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need any dance experience? +
None. The Lancaster class is aimed squarely at beginners; every step is broken down and repeated, and you follow along from the very first session.
Do I need to know anything about Indian film or music? +
Not at all. A love of the films is a bonus but never a requirement — plenty of people come in knowing nothing about Bollywood and leave hooked.
Is it a good workout? +
Very much so. The tempo and full-body movement give you a real cardio session, though you will be enjoying it far too much to notice.
What should I wear? +
Comfortable clothes you can move and sweat in — leggings or joggers and a breathable top — plus trainers with a bit of grip for the footwork and jumps.
How much is a class? +
Eight pounds, paid on the night. It is a flat drop-in with no term fee, no membership and no commitment beyond the class you attend.
Will we actually learn a routine? +
Yes — that is the point. Rather than isolated steps, you build a full choreography to a known track over the weeks and finish with something you can perform.
Where in Lancaster are the classes? +
A central studio around Market Square and Church Street near the castle, with a second space by St George's Quay. The exact venue is confirmed when you book.
Can I come with a group of friends? +
Please do — Bollywood is brilliant for groups, and it also works as a lively, different hen or birthday session if you want to book the class as a one-off.
How do I get to class without a car? +
Lancaster station is a short walk from the central studio and buses stop close by; the campus is a bus ride in. There is no tram in Lancaster, so it is train, bus or foot.
