Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 min

Warm-up and the single tap

Ankles loose, we start with the plainest sound of all — a clear single tap — because everything in the hour is built out of clean, deliberate individual sounds.

10–25 min

The shuffle

Tap's core building block: a brush out and back that makes two crisp sounds from one relaxed ankle, drilled slowly until it stops mumbling and starts speaking.

25–40 min

Flaps and ball-changes

We add a couple more sounds and the weight shifts that link them, so single taps become little rhythmic words rather than isolated noises.

40–50 min

Into a step

The sounds combine into the shuffle-ball-change and a simple travelling step, and for the first time your feet are playing a short phrase.

50–60 min

Play it to music

You lay your rhythm over a track a few times through, ending the hour making music with your feet rather than just running an exercise.

About Tap Classes in Lancaster

Tap is the one dance you can hear as much as see — music made with your feet. The north of England, Lancashire firmly included, has a long clog-dancing tradition: rhythm hammered out of hard floors in mill towns long before anyone strapped on a tap shoe. Our class carries that same plain love of a good beat, and it is taught from the very first sound with nothing assumed.

No rhythm required — that is not a slogan, it is the method. We break every step down into the exact sounds it makes, give those sounds names, and drill them slowly until your feet say them clearly and in time. It is the most musical class we run, and the best part is that you can hear your own progress week to week rather than only feeling it.

Classes run centrally in studios around Church Street and the Market Square, a short walk from the station, with the exact room confirmed on booking. For private groups — birthdays, friends, work socials — we bring the boards to your venue anywhere across Lancaster and the Lune Valley.

Why Choose Tap in Lancaster?

You make the music

Tap is percussion you wear on your feet — no other class lets you literally hear yourself getting better every single week.

No rhythm needed

We teach by naming and drilling each sound, so 'I have no rhythm' becomes 'I have a shuffle' faster than you would believe.

Sharp but low-impact

Plenty of footwork and coordination with very little jumping — kind on the knees while it wakes up your brain and calves.

£8 flat, every week

One flat price on the night, no membership and no block — the simplest way to keep a new skill going without a big outlay.

Your Tap Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

The sounds separate

One clean sound at a time

You learn to make a single, unmistakable tap on purpose, which is the alphabet everything else is spelled from.

Loose ankles

The relaxed, swinging ankle that good tap depends on starts to replace stiff, stampy effort.

02

Shuffles flow

Two sounds, one move

The shuffle stops being fiddly and starts being reliable, and suddenly you are producing rhythm rather than noise.

Left and right agree

Both feet learn the same vocabulary, so steps stop being a good side and a hopeless side.

03

Steps combine

Little rhythmic words

Shuffles, flaps and ball-changes join into steps you can name, remember and repeat in time.

Travelling with it

Your rhythm starts moving across the floor instead of staying rooted to one spot.

04

A rhythm you can play

Over the music

You lay a short phrase confidently over a track, hitting the beat rather than chasing it around the bar.

Ready for a routine

The steps stack into a first proper routine, and tap turns from a puzzle into the loudest fun in your week.

Tap in Lancaster FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need rhythm or any experience? +

Neither. We teach tap as a set of named sounds and drill them slowly, so people who are convinced they have no rhythm are usually the ones grinning first. No previous dancing is assumed.

Do I need tap shoes to start? +

Not at first — begin in any hard-soled shoe so you can hear the difference. Once you know you are hooked, a starter pair of tap shoes is inexpensive and we will advise on what to get.

What age is the class for? +

Our adult beginner class runs from 17 upward, and we run younger brackets too. Pop the age on the form and we will steer you to the right session.

What does it cost? +

£8 a class, flat, paid on the night — no membership, no block booking, no contract.

Where are the classes held? +

Centrally in studios around Church Street and the Market Square, minutes from the station, with the exact room confirmed on booking. Private groups travel across Lancaster and the Lune Valley.

Is tap good exercise? +

Yes, and a sneaky kind — lots of footwork, calf work and coordination with very little impact, so it sharpens your brain and legs while being gentle on the joints.

I think I am tone-deaf — can I still tap? +

Absolutely. Tap is about timing and clear sounds rather than pitch, so being unmusical in the singing sense makes no difference at all to how well you will do.

How long until I can dance a routine? +

Most beginners are running a short, satisfying routine within a handful of weeks, because tap rewards steady drilling and you hear every improvement as it lands.

How do I start? +

Send the short form on this page and we reply within a working day with the next beginner session, the address and the start time.
