Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0-10 min

Breath And Grounding

We start on the floor, tracking the breath and letting the spine roll and release. Contemporary begins with weight and softness, so we spend these minutes handing the body's tension to the floor.

10-24 min

Travel Through Space

Curves, spirals and simple travelling phrases carry us across the room. We work the sense of a movement continuing past its own end — one shape pouring into the next without a hard stop.

24-38 min

Floor Work

Getting down and back up with control — slides, rolls and the soft catch that turns a fall into a phrase. We take the mechanics apart slowly so the floor feels like an ally, not a hazard.

38-52 min

Build The Phrase

The material joins into a longer sequence set to music with room to breathe. We look at where a gesture can carry a feeling, and how two lines can pass, reverse and rejoin like the Lune trading places with the tide.

52-60 min

Release And Reflect

A long, warm stretch and a quiet minute to let the body settle. You leave looser, calmer and a little more articulate in how you move.

About Contemporary Classes in Lancaster

Contemporary dance is the language of breath, weight and flow — a form that swapped ballet's fixed lines for release technique, floor work and honest expression. Our Lancaster class teaches it from the ground up: how to give weight to the floor, how to let one movement spill into the next, and how a phrase can carry a feeling rather than just a shape. It rewards curiosity far more than flexibility.

Lancaster has a long community-arts grain that the style sits comfortably inside — a city where venues like The Gregson keep grassroots performance alive and studios such as The Dance Hub have nurtured contemporary and creative work for years. We nod to that scene honestly, as fellow locals rather than partners we are bound to. There is inspiration everywhere here too, from the tidal give-and-take of the Lune to the slow rise of the Ashton Memorial above Williamson Park — the kind of unhurried, breathing movement contemporary is built on.

You need no background and no particular shape of body. Most people arrive tight and self-conscious, learn within a few weeks to trust their own weight, and find a real release in moving this way. £8 a drop-in, bare feet or socks, and no one watching to mark you.

Why Choose Contemporary in Lancaster?

Movement That Actually Frees You

Release technique teaches the body to let go of the tension it habitually holds. Dancers regularly say the class leaves them looser and lighter than any stretch class does.

No Ballet Background Needed

You do not need years of training or a dancer's flexibility. The floor work and phrasing are taught from scratch and reward exploration over perfect line.

Room To Express

Beyond technique, contemporary gives you a way to move a feeling. The class is a calm, un-judging space to be expressive without anyone keeping score.

Central And Simple

We run from city-centre studios close to the quay and the station, with central car parks a short walk away — an easy, grounding hour in the middle of the week.

Your Contemporary Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

Finding Your Weight

Weeks 1-3

You learn to breathe into movement, give weight to the floor and travel a simple phrase without forcing it. The self-consciousness of the first class starts to ebb.

What changes

You stop holding yourself rigid and begin to trust that the floor will take your weight.

02

Moving Through The Floor

Weeks 4-8

Rolls, slides and the soft catch of a controlled descent become familiar. Getting down and back up stops feeling clumsy and starts feeling like part of the dance.

What changes

The floor turns from something to avoid into somewhere you actively want to go.

03

Dancing The Phrase

Months 3-5

Longer sequences come together and you start colouring them with your own dynamics — where to suspend, where to let a movement fall and pour onward.

What changes

Steps become dancing. You are shaping the phrase rather than just remembering it.

04

Moving With Voice

Month 6 onward

You pick up new material quickly and bring genuine intention to it, whether for the pleasure of the class or creative work of your own.

What changes

The movement carries meaning now — it reads as expression, unmistakably yours.

Contemporary in Lancaster FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

What is contemporary dance, in plain terms? +

It is expressive, grounded dance built on breath, weight and flow rather than fixed positions. Expect floor work, travelling phrases and release technique — moving with the body's natural momentum instead of against it. In Lancaster we teach it warmly and from the very beginning.

Do I need ballet or any dance training? +

No. While contemporary shares roots with ballet, our class assumes no prior training and builds the floor work and phrasing from scratch. Curiosity and a willingness to move get you much further than technique you do not yet have.

Do I have to be flexible? +

Not at all. Flexibility grows gently as a by-product of coming along; it is never the entry ticket. The style cares far more about how you use your weight and breath than how far you can stretch.

What should I wear and do I need special shoes? +

Comfortable clothes you can bend and roll in — leggings and a fitted top work well — and bare feet or grippy socks, since contemporary is danced unshod. Bring a layer for the floor-based warm-up and cool-down.

How much does a class cost? +

£8 for a single drop-in, paid on the day. No membership, no upfront block and no contract — you simply come the weeks you can and pay only for those.

Is there floor work, and what if I struggle getting up and down? +

Yes, floor work is central, but every descent and recovery is taught slowly and by parts so it feels safe. You work at your own range, and options are always given if a particular move does not suit your body that day.

Where in Lancaster do you run it? +

From city-centre studios near the quay and the Lune, with the room confirmed when you book. It is a short walk from the railway station and the central car parks, easy to reach for a mid-week class.

Can I come alone, and will it feel exposing? +

Come alone with confidence — most do. The room is deliberately quiet and un-judging; nobody is graded and there is no marks-and-mirrors pressure. You move as much or as little into expression as feels right.

Can contemporary help with other styles? +

Hugely. The weight, breath and floor control you build here feed straight into ballet, jazz, commercial and more — many dancers take contemporary specifically to loosen and deepen their other training.
