Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Ease Into Tempo
We open with slow neck rolls, rib slides and a long walk end to end, letting the body drop into the patient, unbothered pulse cabaret lives on. Nothing here rewards rushing.
The Vocabulary Tray
Piece by piece we lay out the shimmy, the boa drape, the glove peel and the over-the-shoulder look. Each is drilled on its own and unhurried, because a beat only lands when you place it deliberately.
Working The Chair
The cabaret classic: leaning, lowering and lifting through a single chair. We dismantle every transition until it feels safe under you long before it needs to feel sultry.
Building The Number
The fragments knit into a short routine on one track. We map where a watching eye travels and how one held, unbothered pause outweighs a busy scramble of moves.
Ease Down
Hips and shoulders get a long stretch and, if the room is up for it, a daft boa photo. However you walked in, you leave carrying yourself an inch higher.
About Burlesque Classes in Lancaster
Burlesque is slow-reveal theatre: it trades speed for suggestion and puts wit, character and self-possession in the spotlight. Our Lancaster class hands you the vocabulary without mystique — the walk, the glove peel, the boa, the shimmy and a chair routine — pitched at a tempo that grows nerve instead of fraying it. Nothing needs to come off; the tease is the whole craft, and it stays entirely in your hands.
Lancaster keeps a proper after-dark corner that suits the form. The late bars along Church Street and around the castle-and-priory quarter, and the touring cabaret and comedy that passes through The Dukes in its old converted church, give the style somewhere real to belong here rather than a scene we borrowed. We are straight with you about that scene, though — there is no long-running resident troupe we are pretending to represent.
You need none of that nightlife to walk in. Most people arrive having never tried anything like it, find that the confidence is a skill you rehearse rather than a knack you are born holding, and quietly take it home. £8 on the door, come as you are, and leave a shade bolder than when you arrived.

Why Choose Burlesque in Lancaster?
The Real Take-Home Is Poise
The routines are only the delivery method; carriage is the cargo. Dancers tell us the lasting thing is how they hold themselves once the hour ends.
Fully Dressed, Always
This is a clothed dance class from start to finish. The tease sits in timing, attitude and a held look — any suggestion of a reveal stays yours to keep.
Made For Every Body
Cabaret has forever celebrated real shapes, ages and sizes. The room is kept warm and un-judging so you feel genuinely good in your own skin.
Central And Walkable
We run in city-centre studios around Market Square and the quay, a short walk from the West Coast Main Line station and the town car parks — handy for a class or the front end of a night out.
Your Burlesque Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
First Nerves Turn To First Grins
Weeks 1-3
You pick up the walk and a few isolated moves — a shimmy, a glance, one clean boa pose — inside a room that giggles with you, never at you.
What changes
The flush of session one wears off and mischief takes over. That single shift is why most people book again.
The Tease Starts To Click
Weeks 4-8
The glove peel and the chair transitions begin to feel chosen rather than scary. You learn that slower reads stronger and a pause can hold a whole phrase.
What changes
You stop racing toward the next move and start relishing the one you are actually in.
You Own A Number
Months 3-5
A full short routine lands and we polish the performance — eye-line, timing and the still, certain moment that makes a room lean forward.
What changes
Character becomes the point. The number reads as unmistakably, only yours.
Cabaret-Ready
Month 6 onward
You carry longer numbers with real command and soak up fresh choreography quickly, whether purely for the joy or for a group spot.
What changes
The confidence stops being a costume you put on for class — it is just how you move now.
Burlesque in Lancaster FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
What actually happens in a Lancaster burlesque class? +
You learn the classic toolkit — the walk, the shimmy, the glove peel, the boa and a chair routine — and thread it into a short number. We run it as a confidence-first hour, fully clothed throughout, leaning hard on attitude and timing rather than flexibility.
Do I have to take anything off? +
No, not ever. It is a dance class and you stay fully dressed the whole hour. The tease is built entirely from suggestion, timing and a knowing look — any reveal is yours to keep as pure implication.
Do I need dance experience or a particular body type? +
Neither. Most people who join have done nothing like it before, and burlesque has always centred real bodies of every age, shape and size. You bring willingness; we supply the vocabulary.
What should I wear and do I need heels? +
Wear whatever you can move and feel good in — leggings and a fitted top are ideal for a first go. Heels add swagger if you own a comfortable pair, but flats are completely fine and plenty of dancers stay in them.
How much does it cost? +
Every class is £8, paid as a single drop-in on the day. There is no block booking, no membership and no contract — you come the weeks you want and skip the ones you cannot make.
Where in Lancaster do the classes run? +
We use city-centre studios around Market Square, Church Street and the quay side of the Lune, with the exact room confirmed when you book. It is a short walk from the railway station and the central car parks, so an evening class fits easily around town.
Is there a Lancaster burlesque troupe I would be joining? +
No, and we will not pretend otherwise. There is no long-standing resident company here that we are part of — what we teach is the craft itself, properly and kindly, so any performing you go on to do is entirely your own choice.
Can I come on my own? +
Absolutely, and many do. It is one of the most solo-friendly classes we run — you will be moving alongside a small, warm group within minutes and nobody is watching to judge.
Can I book it for a hen or group? +
Yes. Alongside the weekly drop-in we run a burlesque hen party as a one-off private session, ideal if you would rather bring your own group and have the room to yourselves.
