About Jazz Classes in Lancaster
Jazz is the theatrical, upbeat cousin of the dance family — the sharp lines and high energy you recognise from stage musicals, old Hollywood numbers and half the routines on a Saturday-night television floor. Lancaster has a real appetite for it, with a scatter of studios around Market Square and Church Street and a proper theatrical heartbeat at The Dukes, the theatre and cinema tucked into a former church just off the centre.
Our jazz class channels that show-going energy into something you can actually do yourself. We build carefully from technique — isolations, jazz walks, turns and kicks — before layering on the performance quality that makes jazz such a joy to watch. No background in ballet or any other dance is needed; the fundamentals are taught right from the ground up, at a pace that suits a room full of first-timers.
Whether you wander in from the cobbles below the Castle, the quayside beside the Lune or one of the villages up the valley, you will find a friendly, unfussy class that takes performance seriously without ever taking itself too seriously.

Jazz in Lancaster FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
What is jazz dance? +
Jazz is an energetic, theatrical style rooted in the jazz music of early-twentieth-century America and shaped ever since by Broadway, film musicals and popular dance. It is known for sharp isolations, big kicks, quick turns and a strong sense of performance.
Do I need dance experience to join? +
None at all. We build from the very first isolation and jazz walk, so absolute beginners start on exactly the same footing. The class moves at a pace that keeps newcomers comfortable while stretching anyone with a little background.
What should I wear for jazz class? +
Something you can move freely in — leggings or joggers with a fitted top. Jazz shoes are ideal but not required at first; clean trainers or bare feet are perfectly fine while you settle in.
How much are the classes? +
Each session is £8 on the door, drop-in. No membership and no contract — you simply come along and pay for the class you attend, with block booking to follow once the weekly slot is set.
Where in Lancaster do the classes run? +
We are finalising a central studio near Market Square and Church Street with a smooth, sprung floor suited to turns and travel. Register your interest and we will confirm the exact venue with you.
Is jazz similar to ballet? +
They share some fundamentals — alignment, turnout and controlled turns — but jazz is looser, punchier and far more overtly theatrical. Any ballet you have done will help, though it is absolutely not a requirement to start.
Will there be a chance to perform? +
Jazz is written to be performed, so every routine is danced full-out in class with real presence. As the timetable grows we plan showcase and social performance opportunities for anyone who wants them.
Is jazz dance a good workout? +
Yes — the kicks, travelling steps and full routine runs get the heart going and tone the legs and core, all while you are concentrating on the choreography rather than the effort.
Can I do jazz alongside other classes? +
Of course, and it complements plenty of styles — the technique feeds straight into tap, musical theatre, commercial and contemporary. Many dancers pair jazz with another of our Lancaster classes.
