Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Ground and breathe
We settle the weight low, soften the knees and warm the spine and shoulders, finding the earthy, grounded posture that belly dance grows from.
Hip isolations
Clean hip drops, lifts and slow figure-eights, working one side at a time until the hips learn to move on their own without the rest of you following.
The shimmy
The famous shimmy, broken right down and built up slowly, plus how to layer it over a step so it stays loose rather than tense.
Arms and framing
Soft, snake-like arms and hands that frame the movement, turning a set of isolations into something that reads as a whole dance.
Flow and cool down
We link the isolations into a short flowing phrase to a piece of music, then stretch out the hips and lower back to close.
About Belly Dance Classes in Swansea
Belly dance — raqs sharqi, to give it its Egyptian name — is among the oldest social dances still danced, an art of isolations where the hips, ribcage and arms each move on their own before weaving back together. It is grounded rather than airborne, expressive rather than acrobatic, and famously kind to every shape, age and stage of body. Our belly dance classes in Swansea teach it with respect for those roots and plenty of warmth, from the very first hip drop.
It suits Swansea well. This is a mixed, welcoming, seaside city — you hear it in the range of stalls in Swansea Market, in the international crowd around the university and Uplands, in the sheer variety of people who fill an evening class. Belly dance thrives in exactly that kind of room, where women of every background dance together for the joy of it, and where the shimmer of a coin belt catches the light much as the polished copper once did in the old Copperopolis foundries down on the Tawe.
Every class is a flat £8, paid on the night, with no membership form and no block to buy. You need no partner, no experience and no particular figure — comfortable clothes and bare feet are plenty, and a hip scarf is a welcome extra rather than a requirement. We teach across Swansea and out through Brynmill, Sketty, Killay and the Mumbles, and every session is built for adult beginners.

Why Choose Belly Dance in Swansea?
Every body welcome
Belly dance was made for real bodies of every shape and age. There is no ideal figure here — the movement genuinely flatters and celebrates them all.
Master isolations
You learn to move your hips, ribs and arms independently — a body control that feeds straight into jazz, commercial and every other style you might try.
Grounded and freeing
It is low-impact, kind on the joints and quietly good for posture and core, while still feeling expressive and thoroughly enjoyable.
£8 a class
One flat price on the night, no coin belt required and no term to sign up to. Bring yourself and settle up at the door.
Your Belly Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Getting grounded
Finding the hips
Early weeks are all about clean isolations — a hip drop that is only the hip, a lift that stays crisp. It feels strange at first, then suddenly clicks.
What to wear
Comfortable clothes you can move and see your hips in, and bare feet. A hip scarf makes the movement easier to feel but is entirely optional.
The shimmy settles
Loosening up
The shimmy stops being a clench and becomes a relaxed, sustainable vibration you can hold while you walk, which is when it starts to look right.
Layering
You begin stacking one movement on another — a shimmy under a travelling step — and the dance gains the depth that makes it hypnotic to watch.
It becomes a dance
Arms come alive
Flowing arms and framing hands join the hips, so the whole body speaks together and the isolations read as one connected phrase.
Musicality
You learn to catch the accents in the music, letting a drum hit land in the hips and a melody carry the arms, so you interpret rather than count.
Your own expression
Short routines
You dance longer flowing sequences with real confidence, and begin to colour them with your own style rather than copying step for step.
Where it leads
Some go on to explore veil, finger cymbals or fusion styles; many simply keep coming for the sisterhood and joy of a weekly class.
Belly Dance in Swansea FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need a certain body type to belly dance? +
Absolutely not, and that is one of the dance's great joys. Belly dance suits and celebrates every shape, age and size — the movement works with your body rather than against it.
Do I need a partner or any experience? +
Neither. This is a solo dance and a genuine beginners' class, so you come on your own and we start from the very first isolation, assuming no experience at all.
What should I wear? +
Comfortable clothes you can move in, ideally letting you see your hips, and bare feet. A hip scarf helps you feel the movement but is a nice extra, not a requirement.
How much does a class cost? +
A flat £8, paid on the night. There is no membership, no block booking and no contract — you simply come when you can and pay as you go.
Is belly dance a good workout? +
It is low-impact but works you more than you would expect, quietly building core strength, posture and stamina while staying kind on the knees and back.
Is it suitable if I am shy? +
Very. Classes are warm, supportive and women-friendly, with no performance pressure. Most people arrive nervous and relax within the first few isolations.
Where in Swansea are the classes? +
Around the city centre with sessions towards the Uplands and Brynmill side; the exact studio is confirmed when you book, always easy to reach by bus or from the railway station.
Can I book a class for a hen party or group? +
Yes — belly dance makes a brilliant hen activity. Ask us about a private session for a group anywhere across Swansea, the Mumbles or Gower.
How often should I come? +
Once a week is plenty to keep the isolations improving. The control belly dance asks for builds gradually through steady practice rather than one long session.
