Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm Up Loud
The music is on from the first second — a proper film track — and we warm the shoulders, wrists, neck and hips together. Bollywood leans on all of them, so none of them gets to stay cold for long.
The Building Blocks
We break the style into its pieces: the mudra-style hand shapes borrowed from classical Indian dance, the bouncy footwork, and the face — the eyes and brows that carry as much of a Bollywood number's story as the steps do.
Learning the Routine
Then we build the week's choreography a phrase at a time, set to an actual song, repeating each phrase until it holds. The numbers are punchy and stage-ready, so within a few weeks you have something you could genuinely perform.
Formations and the Finish
Next come the group formations and the big finish. You learn to hit shapes together as a unit and to perform outward — playing to an imaginary audience at the far wall, because half of Bollywood is the showmanship.
Full Run, Then Down
We finish by running the whole routine through at full speed once or twice — usually the point where everyone remembers how much cardio this is — before easing the legs and shoulders back down with a stretch.
About Bollywood Classes in Leicester
Bollywood is a magpie of a dance form. It gathers the graceful hand gestures of classical Indian styles, the footwork of the Gujarati and Punjabi floor, the attitude of hip-hop and the sweeping romance of the big screen, then cranks every colour up to maximum. Our Bollywood dance classes in Leicester teach real routines set to the film songs charging up the charts right now — the drama, the smiles and the storytelling faces all included. The workout hides itself completely under the fun.
No city in Britain is more at home with this. Leicester throws the largest Diwali celebration outside India, when Belgrave Road — the Golden Mile — lights up and tens of thousands come out for the illuminations and the stage dancing; Navratri fills weeks with garba and dandiya; and the city has a deep home-grown Bollywood and Bharatanatyam scene. Film dance is quite simply woven into Leicester's calendar.
Classes run at partner studios in the city centre and up towards Belgrave, and the venue lands in your inbox the moment you book. Plenty of dancers come to nail a sangeet number, and just as many turn up purely for the songs and the sweat. We also take sangeet sessions on the road, right across Leicester and the county — Loughborough, Wigston, Market Harborough, wherever the family is gathering.

Why Choose Bollywood in Leicester?
Real Songs, Real Choreography
Everything is danced to the genuine article — this year's chart hits and the sangeet favourites every wedding guest already knows by heart — never some anonymous Bollywood-flavoured loop that goes nowhere.
The Diwali City's Own Style
This is Leicester's home turf: the biggest Diwali outside India lights up the Golden Mile every autumn, and film dance runs through the city's calendar. You are learning a style Leicester genuinely lives by.
Sangeet Sorted
Need a routine ready for a wedding or sangeet? Send over the song and the date and we will set up a mix of group and private sessions — anywhere across Leicester and Leicestershire — until the whole family has it down and can't stop smiling.
£8 a Class
It is £8 per class, printed openly here — just turn up and pay, with no membership and no commitment. Cheaper block rates come in once your studio has settled on a regular weekly evening.
Your Bollywood Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Straight Into a Routine
Off You Go
You will be dancing an actual routine before your first lesson is over — cut down and simplified, but the real thing, and stage-ready within a month. Bollywood does not do a slow warm-up week; it simply presses play and pulls you in.
What to Wear
Joggers or leggings, a t-shirt you do not mind sweating through, and trainers that give your feet some support. Bring a full water bottle, too — no class we run empties one faster than this.
The Face Work Clicks
Faces Up
The hand shapes and the facial acting move from faintly mortifying to completely essential — in a film routine, your expression is doing as much storytelling as your feet.
Fitness Sneaks In
You can get through a whole song without gasping now, and the second chorus — the one that used to finish you off halfway — stops being a problem.
Opening Out
A Wider Palette
Delicate classical gestures one week, high-energy Gujarati and Punjabi footwork the next, tender film romance the week after — the range of movement you absorb is far wider than anyone expects walking in.
Quicker on the Uptake
You pick up new steps noticeably faster, and a passage that once needed grinding out count by count now comes as a single phrase you move straight through.
On Stage
Where You Have Got To
You are handling longer numbers, holding your position in the group shapes and catching the fine detail — the genuine jump from swaying shyly at the back to owning a spot on the front row.
What's Next
Maybe stealing the show at a cousin's sangeet, a place in a Diwali or community showcase, or simply an hour every week you would not give up for anything.
Bollywood in Leicester FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Can I do Bollywood with no dance background whatsoever? +
Easily. The routines are taught in small, repeatable chunks that lodge in the memory, mistakes are met with a laugh rather than a wince, and plain enthusiasm carries the rest. On a beginners' night, almost everyone near you is learning their first routine as well.
Do I have to be a fan of Bollywood cinema? +
Not at all. Your teacher sets up what each song is about so the expressions land, and the choreography tells its own story either way. Quite a few people here actually discover the films because of the class, not the other way around.
Is Bollywood the same as the garba and folk dancing I have seen at Navratri? +
They overlap but they are not the same. Bollywood is film choreography that pulls in all sorts — classical gesture, folk steps, street and more — and sets it to a movie soundtrack, whereas garba and dandiya are traditional social dances in their own right. You will feel plenty of that folk energy in class, but the film styling is what ties a Bollywood number together.
Where in Leicester do the Bollywood classes run? +
At partner studios around the city centre and out towards Belgrave and the Golden Mile, with the venue confirmed by email once you have booked. The railway station and the buses at St Margaret's are close by, and there is ample multi-storey parking if you would rather drive in.
What should I bring to wear? +
Gym kit you can really move in and a supportive pair of trainers — you will sweat properly in this hour. Want a bit of flair? Throw on a dupatta or anything with a jingle, but the only thing that genuinely matters is wearing something you are happy to soak through.
How much is a Bollywood class in Leicester? +
Every drop-in is £8, laid out openly on this page — pay-as-you-go, with no membership and nothing to sign. The lower block rates kick in once your nearest studio has locked a regular weekly night.
Will you choreograph our wedding sangeet? +
Happily — it is some of our favourite work. Give us the song and the date and we will plan a series of group or private sessions at your venue, anywhere across Leicester and Leicestershire, so the whole party is ready to shine on the day.
What songs will we dance to? +
Film playback numbers from right across the decades — vintage golden-age hits through to the soundtracks topping the charts this year. Every routine gets its own song, and we always welcome a request.
Do you run children's Bollywood classes? +
Yes — we group children and teens by age, with DBS-checked teachers, running alongside the adult sessions. It makes a wonderful first dance style for a child: tuneful, full of energy and impossible to be shy in for long. Add your child's age to the enquiry form and we will place them correctly.
