Wake the Ankles
Tap lives entirely below the knee, so the warm-up goes nowhere near the rest of you — it wakes the feet, ankles and calves that are about to do all the talking.
The Core Sounds
Single taps, shuffles, flaps and ball-changes come first, one at a time and unhurried. Every larger step is really these small sounds stacked up, so each has to ring true on its own before we let any pace into it.
Into a Rhythm
The time step turns up next — the one figure every tapper keeps for good — with its handful of variations. Those first patterns settle into a loop, repeated until the feet run it on autopilot while your head wanders off.
A Short Number
Everything so far gets stitched into a short number over a track, and the challenge shifts to keeping the timing steady while letting the sounds swing and breathe instead of pounding them flat.
Swap and Stretch
We close with a loose call-and-response, everyone throwing short rhythms to each other around the room, and then a proper stretch for the calves and ankles that put in the shift.
About Tap Classes in Leicester
Tap is unusual in handing you two jobs at once — you're the dancer and the drummer, the shoes doing the drumming. Bigger phrases are just small noises threaded together, a shuffle onto a flap onto a ball-change. Our tap dance classes in Leicester start from a single clean sound and grow it week after week into whole routines, so even someone who's never tapped can carry a rhythm inside a month.
Tap is also the sound running through the big touring musicals, and Leicester has a genuine stage for them: Curve, the striking glass Rafael Viñoly theatre in the Cultural Quarter that has sent West End tours out on the road, with the grand Edwardian De Montfort Hall nearby. Our partner studios sit close to both, in the city centre and the Cultural Quarter, and the rooms we use have hard, sprung boards so every sound carries.
No experience is required to walk in, and there's no need to buy tap shoes before you've decided you're keen — borrow a pair from us for the opening sessions. Come in something comfortable, and bring a little patience: your feet will want to run before your ankles are ready, and that's perfectly normal.

Why Choose Tap in Leicester?
A One-Person Band
Very few dances hand you the music and the movement together, yet that's the whole deal with tap — in a tap room, the only thing making noise is your feet. Being your own drummer turns out to be oddly hard to give up.
Try Before You Buy
Nobody's going to make you buy tap shoes just to try the thing — there are pairs to borrow for your early classes, so you can find out whether it grabs you before laying out any cash on your own.
It Works Your Head
Holding a rhythm, a foot pattern and the next few bars in mind at once is a proper mental workout, not just a physical one. Plenty of people keep coming back for that concentration as much as the dancing — the moment a pattern finally lands is genuinely addictive.
Behind the Big Shows
That clatter under the touring musicals arriving at Curve and De Montfort Hall is tap. Once you can knock out a few bars of it yourself, those showstopper numbers stop looking like sorcery and start looking like moves you could name.
Your Tap Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
First Clean Sounds
One noise at a time
The opening weeks are about making each basic sound ring clearly — a shuffle, a flap, a ball-change — before any of them get faster.
Borrowed shoes
You'll likely be in loan taps at this stage, working out whether the whole thing grabs you before you invest in a pair.
Holding a Beat
The time step
The signature pattern goes in and starts to stick, and you learn to keep it looping steadily without counting every beat aloud.
Cleaner, quicker
The early sounds tidy up and gently speed up, and the difference between a fuzzy tap and a crisp one becomes obvious to your own ears.
Full Numbers
Steps into routines
Individual moves link into short numbers set to music, and you hold the timing across a whole phrase rather than one bar.
Swing it
You stop hammering the sounds flat and start letting them lilt and swing, which is when tap begins to sound like music.
Finding Freedom
Trading rhythms
Call-and-response and a little improvising creep in, and making up your own short phrases stops feeling out of reach.
Your own feet
By now you've a real vocabulary of sounds to draw on, and tap turns from something you copy into something you can say.
Tap in Leicester FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need any experience to start tap? +
Not a bit. The class builds from single sounds upward, and in a beginners' group almost nobody has tapped before. The rhythm is something you grow here — it isn't a thing you're expected to arrive already owning.
Do you lend tap shoes to beginners? +
Yes — we keep loan pairs for your first few classes, so you can discover whether tap is for you before buying your own. When you're ready to commit, a starter pair of tap shoes is inexpensive, and we'll point you at what to look for.
Where in Leicester are the tap classes held? +
At partner studios in the city centre and the Cultural Quarter, both a short walk from Leicester station and the Highcross. Every room is chosen for a hard, sprung floor that carries the sound; you'll get the exact address on booking.
How much do tap classes cost in Leicester? +
It's £8 per drop-in, cheaper by the block once the timetable's settled. There's no joining fee and no tie-in — come and tap on the weeks that suit you.
What should I wear, and do I need tap shoes? +
Comfortable clothes you can move in and, to start, no tap shoes at all — borrow a loan pair from us. Once you're hooked, hard-soled tap shoes are the only real kit tap asks for; there's no costume to buy.
Is tap hard on the knees or joints? +
Less than people fear. Good tap is light and springy rather than stamped, it's danced on sprung floors, and we warm the ankles and calves thoroughly first. Keep the sound in your feet rather than your knees and it's kind on the body — one reason it suits so many ages.
What's a time step? +
The classic repeating tap pattern that nearly every tapper learns and keeps for life — a little rhythmic signature you can drop into almost anything. It's usually the first proper 'phrase' you'll master, and getting it looping smoothly is a genuine milestone.
Is tap good exercise? +
Surprisingly good. It's constant movement from the ankles down, it gets the heart going without feeling like a slog, and holding rhythm and patterns in your head works the brain at the same time. You finish warm, and usually grinning.
Where can tap take me in Leicester? +
As far as you fancy — from a fun weekly habit to performing in a showcase. Leicester's big touring musicals at Curve and De Montfort Hall are full of the stuff, and once you tap yourself you'll watch those numbers completely differently.
