Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Posture, Then Loosen
We open on the thing the whole style stands on: a long spine, a soft dropped shoulder line, a lifted chest. Then we mobilise gently — rolling the hips, floating the ribs, easing the shoulders — so the body is genuinely warm before any real movement is asked of it.
Isolations
This is the real work of belly dance: learning to drive one part of the body while everything else keeps still. We take the hips first, then the ribcage, then the shoulders — separately and patiently — because every combination later is just these isolations layered together.
Shimmies and Layers
Once the isolations behave, we stack them. A shimmy underneath a travelling step, a hip accent laid over a shoulder shiver — this stacking is where the movement finally starts to look like the belly dance you had in your head.
Dancing to the Drum
We thread the pieces into a short routine set to Arabic percussion. The skill here is listening — hearing the drum underneath the melody and letting its hits tell your hips and shoulders exactly when to speak.
Free and Cool Down
One last run of the routine, this time looser and open to your own interpretation, and then a slow, kind stretch through the hips, waist and lower back to finish.
About Belly Dance Classes in Leicester
Underneath the sequins and the shimmy, belly dance — properly raqs sharqi — is an exacting solo art. It trains each part of the torso to move on its own, then recombines those isolations over a drum beat. Our belly dance classes in Leicester teach that genuine technique, with real respect for its Egyptian and Turkish heritage and a warm, unhurried room to learn it in.
There is no less self-conscious hour on our timetable. Age, height and body shape genuinely do not matter here — the dance adapts to whoever turns up, and nobody is ever singled out or put on show. That relaxed spirit fits Leicester, one of Britain's most mixed cities, where dance from every tradition has thrived for decades and a room full of different bodies is simply normal.
We hold classes at partner studios around the city centre and out towards Clarendon Park, with the precise room confirmed by email once you have signed up. Usefully, central Leicester is compact and flat, a few minutes' walk from the railway station and served by buses from every direction — so getting to class is rarely the tricky part of your evening.

Why Choose Belly Dance in Leicester?
Every Body Belongs Here
This is a room with no template to match. Whatever your age, size or shape, you fit — in fact the movement tends to suit fuller figures beautifully — and there is no ideal silhouette on any wall for you to fall short of.
Hidden Core Strength
All those slow circles and controlled shimmies quietly recruit the deep postural muscles that most exercise never reaches. The result shows up months later as poise and an easy, upright carriage rather than anything that looks like effort.
Proper Technique, Not Aerobics
You are learning the actual art — raqs sharqi, with its true isolations, its layering and its Egyptian and Turkish styling — taught with care, not a sparkly fitness class that has borrowed the name for its poster and little else.
Just £8 to Start
One class costs £8, and we say so right here with no small print. There is nothing to join and no term to commit to; multi-class blocks come in cheaper once your nearest studio has fixed a regular evening.
Your Belly Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The First Isolation
Finding It
Early on it is all about one breakthrough — persuading the hips to move independently, and then the ribcage. That first taste of driving one part of the body while everything else stays frozen is oddly addictive.
What to Bring
Wear leggings or loose trousers and a top that sits fairly close, so the hips and ribs are visible to the teacher. Dance barefoot or in grippy socks. A coin scarf makes the shimmies audible and is good fun, though nobody needs one to begin.
Building Combinations
Joining the Dots
The separate isolations begin combining into shimmies and layered moves, and those short sequences start to feel like genuine dancing instead of a list of drills.
Hearing the Drum
You start to hear the percussion sitting beneath the melody and place your accents against it — the moment the dance turns from counting beats into really listening to the music.
Your Own Colour
Adding Yourself
The routines grow longer and leave space for your own personality, and the graceful arms and hand shapes come in to frame everything the hips and torso are doing.
Ease Arrives
Somewhere along the way the early self-consciousness quietly disappears, and what is left is simply how good the movement feels from the inside out.
A Dancer in Earnest
Where You Are
You are comfortable across the core moves now, able to improvise to a song you have never heard, and in real, deliberate control of what your body is doing.
What's Next
From here you might take up the veil or finger cymbals, dig deeper into Egyptian or Turkish styling, or start edging toward performance if the idea of a stage appeals.
Belly Dance in Leicester FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
I have not got a dancer's figure — will that hold me back? +
Not at all. This is genuinely a dance for every size and age; it adapts to your body rather than asking your body to change, and you are never expected to show your stomach. Come as you are — that really is the whole point of the class.
Can I start with no experience at all? +
Yes — beginners are exactly who these classes are for. We break every move into small pieces and repeat them until they stick, the atmosphere is light rather than serious, and most of the people beside you on a first night are finding their very first isolation too.
What exactly is raqs sharqi? +
It is the classical Egyptian form that comes to mind for most people when they hear 'belly dance' — an elegant solo style resting on clean isolations of the hips, ribs and shoulders, with the arms framing it all. What we teach is that real technique and its Egyptian and Turkish styling, not a diluted version of it.
Where in Leicester do the classes take place? +
At partner studios around the city centre and the Clarendon Park area, with the precise room emailed once you have signed up. Buses run in from every direction, the centre is a gentle walk from the railway station, and there is plenty of multi-storey parking if you would rather drive.
What should I wear to class? +
Something you can move in that is not too baggy on top — the teacher needs to see the hips and ribcage working. Feet are best bare or in non-slip socks. A hip scarf is fun and makes your shimmies rattle, but it is entirely optional, especially at first.
How much does a class cost? +
Each drop-in is £8, printed plainly here rather than tucked behind a booking form. No membership, no term to sign up for; the discounted blocks arrive once your local studio has a settled weekly evening running.
Is it good for my core? +
Very. The slow, precise movements work the deep stomach and back muscles that most training skips over, and regulars often notice within a month or two that they stand straighter and their lower back feels stronger.
Am I too old to start? +
Very probably not. Our adult classes go right up to 75, and belly dance is famously easy on the joints while still building real strength and mobility — one of the gentler, wiser things you can take up as the years add on.
Is it only for women? +
Most people in the room are women, and that easy, low-pressure feel is something many value, but the dance is open to anyone who wants to learn. If that is you, mention it on the enquiry form and we will point you to a suitable class.
