Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Standing Like a Dancer

Alignment, turnout from the hips and a gentle warm-up — the unglamorous ten minutes every beautiful ballet moment is built on.

10–25 mins

Barre Fundamentals

Pliés, tendus and rises, using the barre for support. Slow, precise and repeated — this is where technique actually lives.

25–40 mins

Into the Centre

The barre work restaged without its safety rail: balance tested, port de bras added, small adage sequences for control.

40–50 mins

Across the Floor

Travelling steps on the diagonal — walks, chassés and, in time, small jumps. The part that feels most like dancing.

50–60 mins

Révérence & Release

The traditional closing bow, then a long guided stretch while your calves quietly file a complaint they will withdraw by morning.

About Ballet Classes in Glasgow

Glasgow is the home of Scotland's national dance company: Scottish Ballet has been based in the city since 1969, headquartered at Tramway on the south side. Our ballet classes in Glasgow borrow that seriousness without the scrutiny — genuine classical training, adult-friendly pacing, and teachers who particularly love starting people from absolutely nothing.

Every session follows the classical arc — barre, centre, travelling work, révérence — scaled honestly to the room in front of the teacher. You work on posture, balance and turnout from week one, and you will feel the difference at your desk long before you feel it in an arabesque. It is slow, truthful training, and that is exactly why it changes people.

Classes run at partner studios in the Merchant City and Finnieston; the full address arrives with your booking confirmation. With Central and Queen Street close by and the Subway looping the centre and West End, most dancers come by rail — wise, given the Low Emission Zone waiting for older cars in the city centre.

Why Choose Ballet in Glasgow?

The National Company Next Door

Scottish Ballet works from Tramway and fills Glasgow stages every season — you are learning the art form in the city where Scotland keeps it.

Posture You Keep

Barre training quietly re-engineers how you stand, sit and walk. People tend to notice before you tell them why.

Adults Start Here All the Time

Beginner classes built for grown-ups starting fresh — no childhood training assumed, and nobody is grading you.

Serious Fun for Kids

Children's ballet with DBS-checked teachers builds musicality and focus early — and Glasgow kids have a national company to aspire to.

Your Ballet Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Finding First Position

Getting Started

Feet positions, pliés and tendus at the barre, plus the vocabulary — everything has a French name, and they stick faster than you would think.

What to Wear

Leggings or joggers with a close-fitting top, so the teacher can actually check your lines. Ballet shoes help, but socks are fine for week one.

Month 2–3

The Barre Becomes Routine

Technique Building

Exercises begin linking into sequences; your balance improves and rises stop feeling like a dare.

Strength Arrives

Ballet is covert strength work — calves, core and back all switch on, and this time they stay switched on.

Month 4–6

Centre Stage

Off the Barre

More centre work, longer adages, pirouette preparations — control you did not have in month one, now plainly visible.

Confidence

The mirror turns from critic into tool. That quiet shift is the real milestone of the first half-year.

Month 6+

A Dancer's Discipline

Advanced Practice

Full class flows from barre to allegro at your level, and improver sessions open up when you are ready for them.

What Comes Next

Pointe preparation for those who chase it, a Scottish Ballet matinee to see the summit — or simply class, weekly, forever.

Ballet in Glasgow FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Whereabouts in Glasgow are the ballet classes based? +

At partner studios in the Merchant City and in Finnieston on the West End side — the specific venue comes with your booking confirmation. Both areas are easy from any Subway stop or either main station.

How much are ballet classes in Glasgow? +

Drop-ins cost £8 a class with no joining fee, and block discounts arrive once the local schedule is confirmed. Ballet on a whim, for less than a cinema ticket.

Can I genuinely start ballet as an adult with zero experience? +

Yes — adult beginners are the heart of these classes, not an afterthought. The barre supports you while technique builds, and progress in ballet is famously steady: attend weekly and it compounds.

What should I wear — are proper ballet shoes essential? +

Something fitted enough to show your alignment — leggings and a t-shirt are perfect. Soft ballet shoes cost little and last for ages, but grippy socks will carry you through the first sessions.

Is there an age where ballet stops being realistic? +

No. We teach adults into their seventies, and barre-based training is one of the kindest things you can do for ageing balance and bone strength. You are not too old; you are right on time.

Will I be expected to go en pointe? +

Not unless you chase it. Pointe work needs years of preparation and a teacher's sign-off on your ankle strength — it is an optional summit, not the syllabus.

Are the classes just for women? +

No — men train in every class, and classical ballet asks a great deal of male dancers: jumps, turns and partnering strength. Professional athletes cross-train at the barre for a reason.

Is this run by Scottish Ballet? +

No — we are an independent school and make no claim otherwise. But sharing a city with the national company matters: students can watch world-class ballet at the Theatre Royal, and it shows in their ambition.

Will ballet actually improve my posture? +

Dramatically, given a few months. Every exercise trains the muscles that hold you upright, and the awareness follows you out of the studio. Desk workers report the difference first.
