Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Settle & Soften

Posture reset, gentle hip circles and breathing — belly dance starts from relaxed knees and an unclenched jaw.

10–25 mins

Isolation Drills

Hips, ribs, shoulders and chest each learn to move on their own — the puzzle-box skill the whole style is built upon.

25–40 mins

Layering the Shimmy

The signature move built honestly: knees driving, hips free, then layered over walks and arm paths until it travels with you.

40–50 mins

This Week's Combination

Drills chained into a short, musical sequence — Egyptian, Turkish or fusion flavours depending on the block.

50–60 mins

Travel, Turn & Stretch

Moving steps and turns to finish, then a long stretch-down for hips that have thoroughly earned it.

About Belly Dance Classes in Glasgow

Belly dance — raqs sharqi, by its proper name — is among the world's oldest social dance forms and one of the most welcoming to every body and every age. Our belly dance classes in Glasgow teach genuine technique: isolations, shimmies, undulations and the joyful business of layering them all to music, taught with respect for the cultures that made them.

It is core training in disguise. Every circle and shimmy works the deep postural muscles that gyms struggle to reach, yet none of it feels like a workout — more like learning a language your hips already half-spoke. Progress comes quickly, too: most beginners own a respectable shimmy inside a month and a travelling one soon after.

Sessions run at partner studios in Finnieston and the Merchant City, and the exact venue lands with your booking confirmation. The Subway's inner circle puts both within minutes of anywhere on the loop, Central and Queen Street cover the trains — and with the city-centre Low Emission Zone, leaving the car at home is no sacrifice.

Why Choose Belly Dance in Glasgow?

Deep Core, No Crunches

Isolations and shimmies train the postural and core muscles most workouts miss — strength that shows up as grace.

Genuinely Every Body

All ages, sizes and genders shimmy in the same room. Belly dance predates the gym-body ideal and cheerfully ignores it.

Technique, Not Cliché

You learn real, named movements and where they come from — Egyptian and Turkish roots included, clichés politely excluded.

The Unwind Effect

Slow isolations and music you can sink into make this the class our dancers describe as therapy with a hip scarf.

Your Belly Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Hips on Speaking Terms

Getting Started

Posture, hip slides and circles, and your first lopsided shimmy. Everyone's is lopsided in week one; it is practically tradition.

What to Wear

Leggings plus a t-shirt; feet bare or in socks. Tie something around your hips — any scarf works — so you can see them move.

Month 2–3

Separate & Layer

Isolation Control

Ribs move without hips and hips without shoulders — and suddenly combinations feel possible instead of theoretical.

The Shimmy Settles

From conscious knee-drive to something your body simply does while you think about your arms.

Month 4–6

Dancing, Not Drilling

Musicality

Combinations start following the music's accents — a drum solo asks different things than strings, and you begin to hear it.

Flow

Whole sequences danced without the teacher's voice in your head. That is the unlock.

Month 6+

Your Style Emerges

Advanced Practice

Veil work, longer choreographies and deeper study of Egyptian and Turkish styles for those who want to specialise.

What Comes Next

Optional performance opportunities — and for everyone else, a lifetime skill that improves every wedding reception you ever attend.

Belly Dance in Glasgow FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Where do belly dance classes take place in Glasgow? +

Our partner studios are in Finnieston and the Merchant City — you get the exact venue when you book. Both areas sit on good Subway and rail links, with Central and Queen Street a short ride away.

How much is a belly dance class in Glasgow? +

£8 per drop-in session, nothing to join and nothing to commit to. Discounted blocks will be offered once the regular Glasgow timetable is locked in.

Do I need dance experience — or rhythm — to start? +

Neither. We teach belly dance one movement at a time at drill pace, and rhythm is trained, not inherited. If you can walk upstairs, your hips can learn to shimmy.

What do I wear — and do I have to bare my stomach? +

You never have to show your midriff — leggings and a t-shirt are the standard uniform. A scarf tied at the hips helps you and your teacher see the movement, and bare feet, socks or soft shoes all work.

Do I need to buy a coin scarf or a costume? +

No. Any scarf tied round your hips does the job in class. Coin scarves are cheap and cheerful if you catch the bug, and costumes only matter if you one day choose to perform.

Is belly dance just for women? +

No — it has historically been danced by men and women alike across North Africa and the Middle East, and our Glasgow classes are open to all. The technique is identical; so is the welcome.

Is belly dance a real workout? +

Sneakily, yes. It is low-impact and kind to joints, but sustained shimmies raise a heartbeat and isolations work the core deeply. You will feel it the morning after your first class — in a good way.

Am I too old, too tall or too curvy for this? +

Belly dance has no body prerequisite — curves are historically an advantage — and we teach adults across five decades of age. The style adapts to the dancer, never the other way round.

Will I be made to perform in public? +

Never. Performance is a small optional branch of this hobby, not the trunk. Most of our dancers shimmy purely for themselves — the studio mirror is audience enough.
