Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Breath & Spine Warm-Up
Rolling through the spine, swinging into the joints and syncing movement to breath — contemporary warm-ups prepare the body to move honestly, not just safely.
Floor Work & Travel
Sliding, rolling and pressing into the floor, then travelling phrases across the room — building the grounded strength that makes contemporary look weightless.
The Combination
A longer choreographed phrase taught in layers — shape first, then dynamics, then intention — so the same movement grows richer each time you run it.
Dynamics & Improvisation
Guided improvisation tasks — following momentum, playing with weight and suspension — that turn the set phrase into something personal.
Release & Cool-Down
A slow unwinding of everything the class asked of the body — long stretches, breath work and a minute of stillness before the city gets loud again.
About Contemporary Classes in Glasgow
Contemporary is the style that lets the body speak plainly — barefoot, grounded, driven by breath and momentum rather than fixed positions. Our contemporary dance classes in Glasgow blend release technique, floor work and travelling phrases into sessions that work the whole body and leave room for interpretation. It is technical, but the technique serves feeling.
This is a good city for it. Scottish Ballet, the national company, is based at Tramway on Glasgow's Southside, and its programming keeps contemporary work in front of Glasgow audiences all year. Our own classes run at partner studios in the Merchant City and Finnieston, with the venue confirmed at booking.
Getting there is simple: both studio areas sit on the Subway loop and within walking distance of Glasgow Central, and with the city centre's Low Emission Zone the train is the sensible choice anyway. Bring socks or bare feet, £8 and an open mind — everything else is taught.

Why Choose Contemporary in Glasgow?
Movement That Breathes
Release-based technique works with momentum and gravity instead of fighting them — kinder on joints, and honest about how bodies actually move.
A Workout in Disguise
Floor work builds core and upper-body strength most gym programmes miss; nobody notices because they are too busy dancing.
Expression Is the Point
Contemporary gives you permission to interpret. Two dancers, same phrase, different stories — and both of them are right.
Starts Where You Are
No ballet history required. The technique scales to every body and every age, and beginners' progress in contemporary is famously fast.
Your Contemporary Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Meet the Floor
Getting Started
Spine rolls, weight transfer, first floor patterns and short phrases — learning to trust the ground to hold you.
What to Wear
Leggings and a fitted top; bare feet or grip socks. Kneepads are welcome once the floor work gets ambitious.
Momentum
Technique
Swings, suspensions and falls — the physics of contemporary — plus longer travelling phrases with real speed in them.
Improvisation
Structured tasks make improvising feel like solving a puzzle rather than performing a solo, and the fear goes quickly.
Interpretation
Artistry
Dynamics, texture and intention — dancing the phrase differently on purpose, and discovering what you have to say with it.
Strength
Floor work pays off: press-throughs, inversions and control of your own body weight that felt impossible in week one.
A Dancer's Practice
Advanced Practice
Full repertoire-style phrases, partner weight-sharing and composition tasks — making short pieces, not just learning them.
What Comes Next
Glasgow's contemporary performance scene, intensives and company workshops — including whatever Tramway has on next.
Contemporary in Glasgow FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where in Glasgow do the contemporary classes run? +
Partner studios in the Merchant City and Finnieston host our sessions — the exact venue is confirmed when you book. Both areas are on the Subway loop and an easy walk from Glasgow Central, so the class fits neatly after a working day.
How much are contemporary dance classes in Glasgow? +
£8 to drop in, with nothing to sign and no commitment beyond the hour. Block-booking discounts follow once the regular Glasgow schedule is confirmed for your studio.
Do I need ballet training to start contemporary? +
No. Ballet feeds contemporary historically, but our beginner classes assume nothing — the warm-up teaches the body mechanics you need as you go. Some of the most striking contemporary dancers started as adults with no technique at all.
What do I wear — and is it really barefoot? +
Leggings or joggers with a top that moves, and yes, bare feet or grip socks — floor contact is part of the technique. Bring kneepads if your knees complain about floor work; plenty of dancers use them.
Am I fit enough or flexible enough for contemporary? +
If you can get down to the floor and back up, you can start. Strength and flexibility are outcomes of contemporary class, not entry requirements — the technique builds them week by week.
Is contemporary like the routines on TV talent shows? +
Those lyrical numbers are one flavour of it. Class covers a wider church — release technique, floor work, improvisation — so you get the tools behind the TV moments rather than a copy of them.
I am nervous about improvisation — do I have to do it? +
Improvisation tasks are structured and low-stakes — following momentum, mirroring a partner — and joining in is always invited rather than enforced. Most people's fear outlasts about two sessions.
What ages are the Glasgow contemporary classes for? +
Adults 17–75 in the main sessions, with teen and children's groups (15–16, 9–14, 6–8) taught by DBS-checked teachers. Select your age group on the enquiry form and we will point you to the right class.
Is there contemporary dance to watch in Glasgow? +
Plenty. Scottish Ballet is based at Tramway on the Southside and programmes contemporary work alongside classical, and touring companies pass through the city's theatres regularly — watching feeds your dancing faster than anything.
