Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm-up to the beat
A cardio-led warm-up on the track's tempo — pulses, bounces and isolations that get you moving and locked into the count before choreography starts.
Foundations & isolations
Chest, head and shoulder isolations plus the grooves that underpin commercial style. Small, precise moves first — the polish lives in the detail.
Break the eight-count
We learn the routine in fragments, counting it out slowly and cleaning the angles so the sharp hits land together rather than smearing across the beat.
Add the styling
Levels, texture and face — the attitude that turns steps into a performance. This is where a combination stops looking like homework.
Perform & film
Full runs to the front at performance energy, often filmed so you can see your progress. Then a stretch and cool-down before you head out.
About Commercial Classes in Durham
Commercial dance is the polished, camera-facing style you see behind pop artists and in music videos — a magpie mix of hip-hop, jazz and street sharpened into tight eight-counts that hit hard on the beat. Our Durham classes teach you to perform to the front, not just to a mirror: clean isolations, confident levels and the kind of attitude that reads on a phone screen as much as a stage.
Durham's commercial energy is genuinely student-driven. It is a young university city where the Market Place and Saddler Street fill up on club nights, the university's dance societies are active, and a lot of the appetite for choreography here comes from people who grew up on YouTube tutorials and viral routines. We lean into that — routines are set to current commercial tracks, taught by artist and era so you know exactly what you are dancing to, and built to look good filmed on the night.
You do not need to already 'have the moves'. We break every combination down to its smallest pieces, drill the timing until it is automatic, then add the styling and face that make it commercial. It is £8 a class, pay as you go, so you can build a routine over a few weeks or drop in whenever a track catches you.

Why Choose Commercial in Durham?
Camera-ready
You learn to project to the front and to a lens, so routines look sharp filmed on a phone — perfect for socials, society showcases or just the group chat.
Sharp, fast, fun
Punchy eight-counts to tracks you already know make the hour fly. It is a workout that never feels like the gym.
Student-city friendly
Timings and prices suit a young, busy city — no contract, no term commitment, just turn up when the week allows.
Great in a group
Come with flatmates, colleagues or a society crew — commercial routines are built to be danced together and look brilliant as a unit.
Your Commercial Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
First class
What to bring
Trainers with a clean sole for indoor floors, comfy gym-style kit and water. Nothing specialist — just clothes you can throw shapes in.
How it feels
Fast and fun, and yes, you will forget bits. Everyone does on week one. The counting-it-out slowly stage is exactly where it clicks.
First month
Timing
The eight-count stops being a scramble. You start hitting accents on the beat instead of just after it, which is where routines suddenly look tidy.
Vocabulary
Isolations, grooves and common commercial shapes become second nature, so you pick up new choreography faster each week.
A few months in
Full routines
You carry a complete music-video-length routine, front-facing and clean, with the confidence to run it at full energy.
Styling
Levels, texture and face are yours to play with — the same steps, but now they read as a performance rather than a rehearsal.
Ongoing
Freestyle
Short freestyle tasks help you find your own attitude and musicality, not just copy the counts you are given.
Where next
Some dancers keep it weekly for the buzz; others take the confidence into society showcases, socials or filmed group projects.
Commercial in Durham FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need dance experience to start commercial in Durham? +
No. Our commercial classes are built for adults starting from scratch as well as returners. Every routine is broken down to its smallest steps and counted out slowly before we speed it up, so a total beginner can keep up in their first session.
What should I wear and what shoes do I need? +
Comfortable gym-style clothing you can move freely in, and trainers with a clean, non-marking sole for indoor studio floors. Bring water. You do not need any specialist dance shoes for commercial.
How much does a class cost? +
Every class is £8, paid as you go. There is no block-booking, no membership and no term commitment — you can come weekly or drop in whenever a track or a free evening lines up.
Where in Durham do the classes run? +
Sessions are held in a city-centre studio around the Market Place and Saddler Street, with the exact room confirmed when you book. It is a short walk from the bus and rail stations, though remember Durham's centre is hilly and partly cobbled, so allow a few extra minutes on foot.
Is this suitable for students and university dance societies? +
Very much so. Durham is a student city and the pay-as-you-go, no-contract format is designed to fit around term time and society schedules. Groups and society crews are welcome to come together and work up a routine as a unit.
Will we film the routines? +
Often, yes — commercial is a camera-facing style, so we run routines to the front and frequently film them so you can see your progress and share them if you want. It is never compulsory, and nobody is put on the spot.
What music will we dance to? +
Current commercial and pop tracks, chosen and credited by artist and era so you always know what you are dancing to. We reference songs by their title and artist rather than pulling out lyrics, and routines change regularly to keep things fresh.
Can I come with friends or a group? +
Absolutely — commercial routines look their best danced together, so flatmates, colleagues and friendship groups are all welcome. Many people find turning up with one familiar face makes the first class far less daunting.
What ages come to the class? +
The adult class covers ages 17 to 75. In a student city the room often skews younger, but the style genuinely suits any age that wants a sharp, high-energy hour, and beginners of every age are common.
