Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Waking the Middle
We warm the spine, ribs and hips with slow circles until the torso feels awake and unlocked. No mirrors of judgement here — just your own body coming online.
Hips First
The hip drop and lift are the alphabet of the dance, so we isolate them patiently and playfully. It feels strange for ten minutes and then it feels wonderful.
The Shimmy
That famous rapid shiver of the hips is really relaxation, not effort, and we coax it out slowly. Once it arrives it tends to make the whole class grin.
Arms and Frame
The upper body learns to float and frame the hips with soft, snaking arms. Suddenly the isolations below read as deliberate rather than accidental.
Putting It Together
We thread the drops, the shimmy and the arms into a short flowing dance to a real track. This is the part that quietly hooks people for good.
About Belly Dance Classes in Durham
Belly dance is one of the most joyful, body-positive rooms you can walk into, and it asks absolutely nothing of your shape, age or fitness on day one. Our Durham class is a warm, women-friendly space where we learn the isolations — hip drops, shimmies, undulations — as building blocks, slowly and without a shred of self-consciousness. The dance was made to be enjoyed by every kind of body, and that is exactly the spirit of the room.
Durham is a small, sociable university city, and a class like this thrives on that mix. We draw students, staff and long-time locals into the same circle, and there is a real community feel to a weekly session where the shimmies and the laughter tend to arrive together. Our studios sit right in the heart of things, around the Market Place and Saddler Street, so you are a short walk from a coffee before or a catch-up after.
A quick, honest word on getting in, because Durham's geography is its own thing. The railway station is up the hill to the north-west and the old centre is cobbled and steep, with no tram or Metro anywhere near — that is the coast's, not ours. Park once at the Prince Bishops car park just below the Market Place and walk up, and keep any heeled shoes for the studio floor rather than the climb.
