Standing Tall at the Barre
We start with alignment — feet, knees, spine and head stacked and lengthened before a single step. Think of the long processional line up to Palace Green: unhurried, upright, deliberate.
Pliés and Tendus
The bend and the stretch are the grammar of every phrase, so we drill them slowly and cleanly at the barre. Get these honest and everything above them behaves.
Into the Centre
We let go of the barre and carry the same posture into the open floor, balancing on our own two feet. This is where control quietly becomes grace.
Ports de Bras and Line
The arms learn to move like the Norman arches overhead — rounded, unbroken and calm. We shape the épaulement so the upper body reads as one continuous curve.
A Short Adage
We link the elements into a slow, flowing sequence and dance it through with music. You leave standing a little taller than you arrived.
About Ballet Classes in Durham
Ballet is the discipline that quietly underwrites every other dance, and starting it as an adult is far less daunting than the mirror-and-mystique reputation suggests. Our Durham classes are built for grown beginners: we teach the barre, the vocabulary and the posture from a standing start, at a pace that respects a body that has spent the day at a desk rather than in a studio. Nobody here is auditioning.
There is something fitting about learning line and bearing in Durham. This is the land of the Prince Bishops, a city of Norman arches, processional steps and a cathedral that has stood a thousand years — poise is practically in the stonework. We borrow that feeling rather than any of it literally, using the long, upright walk up to the peninsula as a picture of the carriage we are after at the barre.
For the youngest and most vocational dancers, Durham is already well served — Elvet School of Dance and Stagecoach Durham do fine work with children and performing-arts training, and we happily point families their way. What we add is a calm, sociable adult class in the city centre. The station sits uphill to the north-west and the cobbled climbs are real, so park once at the Sands or Walkergate car park and walk in; there is no tram or Metro to lean on here.

Why Choose Ballet in Durham?
Better Posture
Weeks at the barre unpick desk slouch and leave you standing straighter off the floor too.
Built for Beginners
We start from first position and plain standing — no prior training or flexibility assumed.
Deep Strength
Slow, controlled work builds real core and leg strength without any pounding or strain.
Calm and Focused
An hour of quiet concentration that clears the head as much as it works the body.
Your Ballet Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The First Class
No Kit Needed
Leggings, a fitted top and bare feet or socks to begin — proper shoes can come later.
Meeting the Barre
You will learn to stand, hold and do your first pliés within the opening class.
The First Term
The Vocabulary
Tendu, dégagé and rond de jambe stop sounding foreign and start feeling like your own.
Steadier Balance
Time away from the barre grows and your standing leg gets noticeably more reliable.
Growing Control
Line and Arms
Your ports de bras soften and your whole shape begins to read as elegant, not effortful.
Longer Phrases
We string steps into flowing sequences that ask for stamina as well as neatness.
Dancing It
The Adage
Slow, sustained combinations that show off the control you have quietly banked.
Where Next
Carry on into pointe preparation, repertoire or simply a lifelong weekly class.
Ballet in Durham FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Am I too old to start ballet? +
No. These classes are made specifically for adult beginners, and we regularly start people in their thirties, fifties and beyond from scratch.
Do I need to be flexible already? +
Not in the slightest. Flexibility is something ballet builds gradually — you begin with whatever range you have today and work from there.
What should I wear? +
Something fitted you can move in, like leggings and a snug top, so the teacher can see your alignment. Bare feet or socks are fine before you buy any ballet shoes.
How much does it cost? +
A drop-in class is £8, paid per session, with no term contracts or memberships required.
Where are the classes in Durham? +
In a central Durham studio confirmed when you enquire. The station is uphill to the north-west, so park at the Sands or Walkergate and walk — there is no Metro or tram here.
How long is each class? +
60 minutes, running from barre work through to a short flowing sequence in the centre.
Is this suitable for children? +
Our class is aimed at adults, ages 17 to 75. For children, Durham is well served by schools such as Elvet School of Dance and Stagecoach Durham.
Will I need ballet shoes straight away? +
No. Come in socks or bare feet for your first few classes and pick up soft ballet shoes only once you know you would like to continue.
How do I book? +
Send us an enquiry through the form on this page and we will reply with the next class times and the studio location.
