A full warm-up with extra attention on ankles, calves and core — the muscles that keep you safe in a heel — plus posture drills before a shoe goes on.

Walks & weight

The foundation of heels: how to walk, place weight and change direction in a heeled shoe with control. Master this and the choreography follows easily.

About Heels Classes in Durham

Heels is choreography danced in a heeled shoe — a blend of commercial and jazz styling with a slower, more powerful attitude, built around posture, controlled weight changes and the confidence to hold the room's eye. It has become one of the most popular adult classes anywhere precisely because it is as much about how you carry yourself as the steps themselves, and Durham is no exception.

There is a very practical Durham footnote to a heels class here: this is a steep, cobbled, bridge-crossing city, and nobody sensibly walks in from the station or the Market Place already in their heels. We tell everyone to arrive in trainers, tackle the hills and cobbles flat-footed, and change into heels once you are safely inside the studio. It is a small thing that saves ankles — the peninsula's gradients are lovely to look at and unforgiving on a stiletto.

Class is beginner-friendly and starts with the fundamentals of dancing in a heel — how to place your weight, how to walk with intent, how to keep your knees soft and safe — before any choreography. You can start in a low block heel and work up, or even learn the routine in trainers first. It is £8 a session, pay as you go, in a supportive room where the whole point is building confidence, not showing off.

Why Choose Heels in Durham?

Confidence first

Heels is built to make you feel powerful. The class is a supportive, no-judgement room where holding your own space is the whole point.

Real technique

You learn to dance safely in a heel — weight, ankle strength and clean lines — not just strike a pose. That technique protects you and looks the part.

Durham-savvy

Cobbles and steep streets mean trainers in, heels on at the studio. We coach you into the shoe safely rather than throwing you in at the deep end.

£8, no pressure

Pay as you go with no contract, and start in whatever heel height feels safe — or none at all. Progress is entirely at your pace.

Your Heels Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

First class

What to bring

Trainers for the walk in, plus a block or low heel you can stand in comfortably. Knee pads are welcome if you have them; leggings and a top you feel good in.

How it feels

Empowering and a little wobbly — that is normal. We spend real time on walking and weight before choreography, so your ankles are ready.

02

First month

Strength

Ankles and calves adapt fast. Walking, turning and changing level in a heel starts to feel steady rather than precarious.

Attitude

The self-conscious edge softens. You begin to perform to the front instead of checking the mirror for reassurance.

03

A few months in

Full choreography

You carry a complete, sultry routine with clean lines and confident level changes, danced at whatever heel height suits you.

Musicality

You learn to slow down and sit in the music — heels rewards control and texture far more than rushing every count.

04

Ongoing

Height & style

Some dancers climb to a higher heel, others stay low and focus on styling. Both are completely valid — the confidence is the goal, not the inches.

Where next

Many keep it as a weekly confidence boost; others fold it into commercial classes or a group routine for a night out or celebration.

Heels in Durham FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need to be able to dance in heels already? +

Not at all. A big part of the class is learning to dance in a heel safely — how to place your weight, keep your knees soft and walk with control. Complete beginners are the norm, and you can even learn the choreography in trainers before switching.

What kind of heels should I bring to Durham classes? +

Start with a block heel or a low, secure heel you can already stand in comfortably rather than a tall stiletto. A shoe with an ankle strap helps. You can always work up to a higher heel over time as your strength and confidence grow.

Why do you tell people to arrive in trainers? +

Because Durham's centre is steep, cobbled and criss-crossed with bridges, and walking in from the Market Place or the station in heels is asking for a turned ankle. Come in trainers, tackle the hills flat, and change into your heels once you are inside the studio.

How much is a class and is there a contract? +

Classes are £8 each, paid as you go. There is no membership or block-booking, so you can come weekly or drop in when it suits — and start at whatever heel height, or none, that feels safe for you.

Is heels suitable if I'm not very fit or flexible? +

Yes. The class builds ankle and core strength gradually and every move can be scaled to your level. It is more about control, posture and attitude than extreme flexibility, so a wide range of fitness levels work happily side by side.

Where in Durham are the classes held? +

In a city-centre studio near the Market Place and Saddler Street, with the exact room confirmed on booking. Use a central car park rather than driving into the peninsula, and allow time for the walk in, as parts of the route are cobbled and uphill.

Will I have to perform on my own? +

No. Everything is danced as a group and there is no solo spotlight unless you actively want one. The room is deliberately supportive — the whole ethos of heels is building confidence together, not putting anyone on the spot.

Can I come with friends or for a celebration? +

Definitely. Friends, colleagues and small celebration groups are very welcome, and heels is a popular choice for a fun night in the studio. If you want a private group session around a birthday or hen do, we can arrange that separately.

What ages come to heels classes? +

The adult class is open to ages 17 to 75. The style suits any adult who wants to feel confident and strong, and while it draws a lot of people in their twenties and thirties, older beginners are genuinely welcome and common.
