Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Posture and Breath

We set a soft, tall stance with knees easy and weight grounded, then breathe into the ribs — belly dance lives in relaxed control, and everything reads better once the body stops bracing.

10–25 mins

The First Hip Drops

Standing still above the waist, you learn to drop and lift one hip cleanly on the beat, drilling it slowly until the movement comes from the hip alone and not the whole leg.

25–40 mins

Finding the Shimmy

The signature shimmy gets broken right down — a fast, loose vibration through relaxed knees — and practised in small doses so it stays soft rather than tense and forced.

40–50 mins

Circles and Figure-Eights

Hips and chest learn to trace smooth circles and horizontal eights, the flowing isolations that give belly dance its liquid, unhurried quality.

50–60 mins

Stringing It Together

We weave the night's moves into a short flowing sequence to music, so you leave having actually danced rather than only drilled — followed by a gentle stretch.

About Belly Dance Classes in Brighton

Belly dance is built from small, precise movements — a hip that drops on a beat, a shimmy that ripples, a chest that draws a slow circle — and our belly dance classes in Brighton teach them one clean isolation at a time. It is a style that flatters absolute beginners, because the joy comes from control rather than speed, and control is something anybody can begin learning in their very first hour.

Brighton is about as welcoming a place as you could pick to try it. The city wears its openness proudly, and belly dance has long had a home within its broad world-and-Latin social scene — the same warm, mixed community that keeps the Salsa Zone Latin nights busy also turns out for shimmy socials and hafla evenings. We simply point you towards it; there is no affiliation, just a genuinely friendly circle of dancers to grow into once the basics settle.

The beginners' class runs centrally, an easy walk from North Laine and the seafront, with the studio confirmed on booking. Reaching it is straightforward on the mainline trains into Brighton station or the city buses, with no tram or metro to think about. Wear something that lets you see your hips move and bring bare feet or soft shoes — a coin scarf is fun but entirely optional. We also bring the class to groups across Brighton, Hove and the Sussex coast.

Why Choose Belly Dance in Brighton?

Every Body Welcome

Belly dance was never built for one shape or size — it celebrates the body you already have, and our beginners' room is warm, unjudging and open to all.

Confidence You Feel

Learning to move your hips and torso with control does something quiet for how you carry yourself, and most people notice it standing taller within a few weeks.

A Friendly Local Scene

Brighton's open world-and-Latin community, the same crowd behind its busy social nights, gives your belly dance a genuinely welcoming place to keep going.

We Travel to You

Hen parties and private groups anywhere across Brighton, Hove and the Sussex coast can have the whole class delivered to their own venue.

Your Belly Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–3

Learning to Isolate

First Moves

Clean hip drops and lifts, a soft shimmy and the grounded posture that lets each isolation show clearly.

What to Bring

Something that reveals the hips, bare feet or soft shoes, and a coin scarf if you fancy one — though it is entirely optional.

Weeks 4–8

Flowing Shapes

Circles and Eights

Hip and chest circles and figure-eights joining the drops, so the movement starts to pour rather than punctuate.

Layering Up

Beginning to lay a shimmy under a slow travelling step — the first real taste of belly dance's clever layering.

Months 3–4

Dancing to Music

Musicality

Reading the drum and the melody so a sharp hip answers a sharp beat and a slow circle rides a long, singing phrase.

Short Combinations

Linking a handful of moves into flowing phrases you can dance through without pausing to remember what comes next.

Month 5+

Making It Yours

Full Routines

Carrying a whole short routine from start to finish, layering isolations with growing ease and confidence.

Your Own Expression

Letting your personality colour the movement, until it reads as you enjoying the music rather than counting the steps.

Belly Dance in Brighton FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need any experience or a certain body type? +

None at all, on both counts. Belly dance is famously welcoming to every shape, size and age, and the class begins from the very first hip drop. If you have never danced a step, you will be in good and friendly company.

What should I wear? +

Something comfortable that lets you see your hips move — leggings and a fitted top are perfect. Bare feet or soft shoes work best. A coin or hip scarf makes the movements easier to feel and looks great, but it is completely optional.

Is belly dance good exercise? +

Genuinely, yes. All that controlled isolation quietly works the core, improves posture and builds a supple lower back, and an hour of shimmies gets the heart going more than the relaxed pace might suggest.

How much is a class? +

A flat £8 paid on the night. There is no membership and no block to buy in advance — you come to the sessions that suit your week and pay only for those.

Where in Brighton do classes run? +

Centrally, an easy walk from North Laine and the seafront, with the exact studio confirmed when you book. It sits close to Brighton station and is well served by the city's bus routes.

How do I get there? +

On the trains or buses — Brighton station takes mainline services and the buses reach the neighbourhoods and Hove. The city has no tram or metro, so trains and buses are how you arrive.

Is there anywhere to dance socially afterwards? +

There is. Brighton's open world-and-Latin community runs hafla and social evenings, the same friendly circle that keeps the city's Latin nights busy, and we will happily point you towards it when you feel ready.

Can men or complete beginners join in? +

Yes to both. The beginners' room is mixed and unpretentious, and the whole class is pitched at people arriving with no background at all. Everyone learns the same isolations from the same starting point.

Could you run a belly dance session for a hen do? +

Absolutely — a belly dance class is a lovely, giggly hen booking, and we bring the entire thing to your venue across Brighton, Hove and the Sussex coast. Send us your date and numbers and we will take care of it.
