Signature Gestures
You learn the characteristic hand and wrist movements — the mudra-inspired shapes that give Bollywood its flavour.
Footwork & Bhangra Bounce
We add the bouncy footwork and shoulder movements borrowed from bhangra and folk dance.
Building the Routine
Piece by piece we link the moves into a short film-style sequence, counted until it flows.
Perform It
We run the whole routine to music, full-out and full of expression — the fun part everyone stays for.
About Bollywood Classes in York
Bollywood dance is the exuberant, camera-ready style of Hindi cinema — a joyful fusion of classical Indian dance, folk bhangra energy and modern pop choreography, all performed with huge expression and even bigger smiles. Our Bollywood classes in York teach crowd-pleasing routines that anyone can pick up, whatever their background or fitness.
York's community is more diverse than its Roman and medieval postcard image lets on, and there is real enthusiasm here for the colour and music of Indian film dance. We break the choreography into clear counts, layer on the signature hand gestures and shoulder movements, and build up to a full routine you can genuinely perform.
It is fantastic cardio disguised as fun. You will barely notice the workout because you are too busy grinning — Bollywood is as much about attitude and storytelling as it is about steps.

Bollywood in York FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need to be fit to start? +
No. Bollywood classes in York are for every fitness level — we build up gradually and you take breaks whenever you need them. The energy is contagious, so most people find they push themselves without realising it.
Do I need dance experience or an Indian dance background? +
None at all. Complete beginners are exactly who these classes are for, and you do not need any prior knowledge of Indian dance or music. We explain every gesture and step from scratch.
How much does a class cost? +
It is a flat £8 per session as a drop-in. No membership and no term fees — just pay for the classes you attend.
What should I wear? +
Comfortable clothes you can move and sweat in, and trainers with a bit of grip. Many people love to add a splash of colour or a scarf for the fun of it, but that is entirely up to you.
Is it a good workout? +
Genuinely, yes. The tempo, jumps and full-body movement make it strong cardio, but it never feels like a fitness class because you are focused on the routine and the music.
Can men join too? +
Absolutely. Bollywood dance has powerful, energetic styles for everyone, and our classes are mixed and welcoming to all — the bhangra-rooted movement in particular has a bold, grounded feel.
Where are the classes held? +
In central York and on the Clifton and Bootham side of the city; the confirmed studio address is sent when you book. Both are walkable from the railway station or on a bus route.
Will we learn a full routine? +
Yes. Over a few weeks you build a complete film-style routine, learning it in small, manageable sections so it never feels overwhelming — and then you get to dance the whole thing to music.
How do I book a place? +
Send your details through the enquiry form on this page and we will reply with current class times and the venue. You can also call us on 07759 656300.
