Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Barre Warm-Up
We begin at the barre with pliés and tendus — slow, precise movements that wake up the legs, feet and turnout safely.
Alignment & Posture
Time on how you hold your spine, shoulders and head — the quiet detail that makes ballet look effortless.
Centre Work
Away from the barre we practise balance and simple positions unsupported, building the stability the barre was training.
Across the Floor
Gentle travelling steps — a controlled walk, a small chassé — so you move through space with grace.
Reverence
We close with the traditional curtsey or bow that ends every ballet class — a calm, grounding finish.
About Ballet Classes in York
Ballet is the foundation beneath almost every other dance style — the source of the turnout, posture and control that make all movement cleaner. Our ballet classes in York are aimed at adults, whether you danced as a child and want to return or you are approaching the barre for the very first time.
York has a genuine ballet culture to step into. Northern Dance Academy runs graded and adult ballet in the centre and out at Acomb, and the long-established Yorkshire Rose Academy of Dance (YRAD) has trained young dancers here for years. We reference that scene with respect and simply add a relaxed, adult-only beginner option alongside it — we are an independent teacher, not connected to those schools.
Expect a proper class in miniature: a gentle barre for alignment, centre work for balance, and a little travelling movement across the floor. It is calmer than a cardio session but deceptively strong work, and you will feel your posture change within a few weeks.

Why Choose Ballet in York?
Posture That Lasts
Ballet retrains how you stand and carry yourself — many adults notice their everyday posture improving within a month.
Strength Without Strain
Low-impact but deeply strengthening, ballet builds core stability, ankle strength and flexibility gently.
A Real Ballet City
York supports a serious dance culture — from Northern Dance Academy to YRAD — and our adult class is your way into that tradition.
Flat £8 Drop-In
No termly fees or exam pressure — just £8 a class, whenever you can make it.
Your Ballet Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Getting Started
Meeting the barre
You learn the five positions, plié and tendu, and how to hold the barre without leaning your weight on it.
French, gently
The vocabulary is French, but we translate everything — you pick up the words naturally, with no memorising required.
Finding Control
Off the barre
Simple centre exercises train you to balance and hold positions with only your own strength.
Longer lines
You start to stretch through the arms and legs, turning stiff shapes into flowing ones.
Moving With Grace
Travelling steps
Small jumps and glides across the floor let you cover space with the lightness ballet is known for.
Musical phrasing
You learn to move with the piano rather than counting, so exercises feel like dancing, not drilling.
Confident at the Barre
A full class
You can follow an unbroken beginner class from barre to reverence without stopping to catch up.
Where next
Some students move on to graded work with York's specialist schools; others simply enjoy the weekly calm and strength.
Ballet in York FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Am I too old to start ballet? +
No — our York classes are specifically for adults, including people in their fifties, sixties and beyond. Ballet scales to your body; we work within the range your joints are happy with and build from there.
Do I need any experience? +
None. Many students have never done ballet before, and others are returning after years away. We teach every position from scratch, so a complete beginner is exactly who the class is for.
What do I wear, and do I need ballet shoes? +
To start, wear leggings or fitted joggers and a top you can move in, with socks or bare feet. Soft ballet shoes help once you know you enjoy it, but they are not required for your first classes.
How much is a class? +
Each session is a flat £8 drop-in. There are no term fees, uniform costs or exam charges — you pay only for the classes you attend.
How is this different from the ballet schools in York? +
Schools such as Northern Dance Academy and Yorkshire Rose Academy of Dance do wonderful graded and vocational training, mostly for children and serious students. We are an independent adult class focused on beginners and returners, and we are not affiliated with them — we simply point you towards the wider York scene.
Will ballet help my other dancing or fitness? +
Considerably. Ballet is the technical base for jazz, contemporary and commercial dance, and it builds core strength, balance and flexibility that carry into everything from running to yoga.
Where are the classes held? +
In central York near the Minster and Coppergate, with a second studio on the Clifton and Bootham side. You will get the confirmed address when you book; both are walkable from the station or on a bus route.
Is ballet a good workout? +
It is quietly demanding. You may not be out of breath the way you would in a cardio class, but holding positions and controlling every movement works muscles you rarely use — expect to feel it the next day.
