Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Posture & Frame
We start with how to stand and hold your partner — the frame that makes ballroom feel secure and look elegant.
The Waltz Box
Your first proper figure: the rise-and-fall of the waltz box step, counted slowly in three.
Round the Room
We travel the waltz anticlockwise around the floor, learning to steer and share the space with other couples.
A Second Dance
We add a taste of the quickstep or social foxtrot so you have more than one dance in your pocket.
Social Round
A relaxed practice to music, rotating partners, so you finish having danced properly with several people.
About Ballroom Classes in York
Ballroom is the classic partnership dance — the waltz, quickstep and social foxtrot that never really go out of fashion. Our ballroom classes in York keep things sociable and unstuffy: no competition pressure, no sequins required, just the elegant, reliable dances you can use at a wedding, a party or a local tea dance.
York has always been a city that dances. The Georgian Assembly Rooms on Blake Street once hosted the city's grand balls, and that appetite for social dancing never went away. We teach the beginner-friendly version — a clear frame, a comfortable hold and steps you can actually remember — rather than the high-gloss competition style you see on television.
You do not need a partner or a stitch of experience. We rotate the room so everyone practises leading or following with different people, and we keep the atmosphere relaxed, friendly and firmly grounded in York's own social-dance tradition.

Your Ballroom Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
First Steps
Hold and frame
You learn a comfortable, correct hold and how to keep your own balance rather than hanging on your partner.
The waltz box
The three-count box step becomes automatic, complete with the gentle rise and fall that defines the waltz.
Around the Floor
Travelling & turning
You take the waltz on the move, learning natural turns and how to navigate a busy floor politely.
A second rhythm
The brisk quickstep or smooth foxtrot gives you a contrasting dance and a feel for changing tempo.
Social Confidence
Leading and following
Rotating partners, you learn to signal clearly or respond to a lead, so you can dance with anyone at an event.
Remembering it
You build a small, dependable set of figures you can recall without a teacher counting beside you.
Out on the Floor
The big day
Whether it is your own wedding or a family party, you can take to the floor with a proper, calm waltz.
Keeping it up
Many students carry on to local tea dances and socials, where ballroom becomes a regular, friendly habit.
Ballroom in York FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need a partner? +
No. Plenty of people join on their own. We rotate partners through the class so you always have someone to dance with, and you learn to lead or follow anyone — far more useful than only ever dancing with one person.
Is this the same as Strictly-style ballroom? +
It shares the same dances but not the pressure. We teach the sociable, beginner-friendly version — a clear frame and steps you can remember — rather than the competition choreography and costumes you see on television.
How much does it cost? +
A flat £8 per class, paid as a drop-in. No joining fee and no term contract — just turn up on the nights that work for you.
What should I wear on my feet? +
Shoes with a smooth sole that let you turn are ideal — leather-soled shoes or proper dance shoes are perfect, but avoid grippy trainers. A small heel can help, though flats are completely fine to start.
We are getting married — can this help with our first dance? +
Yes. The waltz and social foxtrot make a lovely first dance, and the frame and timing you learn here transfer straight to it. If you want a routine to a specific song, ask us about dedicated wedding-dance sessions too.
I have two left feet — will I cope? +
You will. Ballroom is built on a handful of repeating patterns, and we introduce them one at a time, slowly, with lots of practice. Most self-described two-left-feet students are dancing a waltz round the room within a few weeks.
Where do the classes take place? +
In central York and on the Clifton and Bootham side of the city — the confirmed studio address comes through when you book. Both are easy to reach on foot from the railway station or by local bus.
What ages come along? +
All sorts. Ballroom is genuinely all-ages: we have students in their twenties learning for a wedding and others well into retirement dancing for the love of it. You will not feel out of place whatever your age.
How do I sign up? +
Fill in the form on this page with the days that suit you and we will send back current class times and the venue. You can also reach us on 07759 656300.
