Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

First 10 min

Oil the Hinges

Before anything sharp, the body gets long and mobile — ankles, spine and shoulders working through easy swung counts — because jazz asks a lot of the joints and a cold body only fights you.

10–22 min

Find the Centre

We drill the quiet control jazz is built on: weight stacked over one foot, a still centre, a clean pull-up — the difference between a turn that arrives and one that scrambles.

22–36 min

Lines and Isolations

Ribs, hips and head learn to move on their own account, and arms find the stretched, deliberate lines that make even a simple step read from the back of a room.

36–50 min

Walk It and Kick It

The signature travelling vocabulary goes in — jazz walks, pivots, a pas de bourrée, a controlled kick — strung slowly into short phrases so the timing swings rather than stamps.

50–60 min

Take the Number

Everything collects into one bright little routine that runs to a full track, danced through a couple of times so you leave with something whole, not a drawer of loose pieces.

About Jazz Classes in York

Jazz has a proper home in York already, and we are glad of it. Northern Dance Academy carries jazz through its graded and adult work in the centre and at Acomb, while York Theatre Royal's Everybody Dance festival shows how many people here will happily move given the chance. Our jazz classes in York add one more door in: an unhurried adult hour for beginners and returners who want the turns, kicks and bright lines without a syllabus or an exam hanging over them.

Jazz is the connective tissue of stage dance — the isolations and swung timing under a musical-theatre number, the clean lines of a chorus routine, the pop and attack of a competition piece. We keep the hour broad on purpose: a warm, mobile spine and strong feet first, then the vocabulary that turns up everywhere from a West End ensemble to a pop video — pivots, pas de bourrée, jazz walks, the odd kick line — taught slowly enough that the shapes actually stick.

This is a city that has kept a theatre going on roughly the same spot since the 1740s and gave the stage Judi Dench, born here in 1934, so an adults' jazz night sits comfortably among the medieval streets. Confirmed sessions run a couple of minutes from York railway station, around Coppergate and the walls, with a second room on the Clifton side. There is no tram in York, so it is the bus or a short walk, and for private groups we bring the same hour out to Holgate, Heworth, Fulford, Bishopthorpe and across the Vale of York.

Why Choose Jazz in York?

Bright Lines, No Exam

You get the turns, kicks and stage-sharp lines that make jazz fun, with none of the graded syllabus or exam pressure — just an adult hour built to enjoy the vocabulary.

The Root of Stage Dance

Jazz underpins musicals, pop routines and competition pieces alike, so the hour quietly hands you a base that carries straight into a show class, a hen routine or a Strictly-style number later.

Beginners and Returners

Whether you have never taken a class or last did jazz as a teenager, we pace the shapes so they land — control before flash, and every step broken down before it speeds up.

Across York to You

City-centre and Clifton rooms plus a full come-to-you service drop the same jazz hour into a hall near Holgate, Fulford, Bishopthorpe or anywhere out across the Vale of York.

Your Jazz Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

Control First

What clicks

Standing tall over one foot stops being a wobble and becomes a place you can trust, which is quietly the foundation every turn and kick is built on.

What we add

The core jazz walk and a clean pivot, drilled unhurried until the swung timing feels natural rather than counted.

Month 2

Adding Attack

What clicks

Isolations start firing on their own, so a head snap or a rib shift lands on the beat without you having to think the whole body through it.

What we add

A first proper turn and a controlled low kick, introduced with the brakes on so technique leads and speed follows.

Months 3–5

Phrases That Travel

What clicks

Steps join into travelling phrases that eat the floor, and the lines hold their shape even as the routine picks up pace.

What we add

A short kick line and a turn sequence, plus the performance habits — focus, breath, finish — that make a phrase read from the back.

Month 6+

Your Stage Face

What clicks

The routine stops being steps you recall and becomes something you perform, the timing and carriage carrying your own flavour.

What we add

Longer numbers and small moments out front, so dancing for an audience starts to feel like a treat rather than a test.

Jazz in York FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Where are the jazz classes held? +

Confirmed adult sessions run a couple of minutes from York railway station, around Coppergate and the walls, with a second room on the Clifton side — the exact address lands once you have booked. There is no tram in York, so plan for the bus or a walk in, and for private groups we travel out to Holgate, Heworth, Fulford and across the Vale of York.

What does a class cost? +

Eight pounds flat per session, settled on the day. No sign-up fee, no term to pay for in advance and nothing renewing in the background. If a private group or a class at your own venue suits you better, say the word and we will quote you a straight figure.

Do I need any dance background? +

None at all. The hour is aimed squarely at beginners and returners, and every shape is broken right down before it is asked to travel or speed up. If you last did jazz as a teenager, you will find it comes back faster than you expect.

How is jazz different from your ballet or contemporary classes? +

Ballet is the formal grammar underneath and contemporary is the grounded, weighty end of the spectrum; jazz sits in the bright, rhythmic, stage-facing middle. It borrows ballet's clean lines but swings the timing and adds attack — the feel of a musical number rather than a barre or a floor-based release class.

Is this the same jazz you see in musicals? +

It is the root of it. Musical-theatre routines, pop videos and competition pieces all grow out of the same jazz vocabulary, so what you learn here — walks, pivots, isolations, kicks — is exactly the base those numbers are built on.

What should I wear and bring? +

Something you can move and stretch in, and soft flat shoes or bare feet to start; jazz shoes are lovely later but never needed for a first class. Bring water, and skip anything so loose it hides your lines — part of jazz is seeing the shape you are making.

Do you run graded exams like a syllabus school? +

No, and that is deliberate. Northern Dance Academy and other York schools cover the graded, exam-based route beautifully; ours is an unpressured adult hour for the love of it, and we are glad to point you toward a syllabus school if exams are what you are after.

Will there be turns and kicks, or is it all technique? +

Both, in the right order. We spend the early weeks on the control that makes turns and kicks safe and repeatable, then absolutely put them in — a class with no pirouette or kick line would not be much of a jazz class.

Can you teach jazz for a group or event instead? +

Certainly. We regularly bring a one-off jazz or show-dance hour to birthdays, work socials and hen parties who want something with a bit of Broadway sparkle. Give us rough numbers and a date and we will set it up anywhere across York and the Vale of York.
