Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Heat And Isolate
We lift the body temperature gently, then work through isolations region by region — a rib slide here, a hip press there, a shoulder roll — building the small movement vocabulary the rest of the style leans on.
Travel The Diagonal
We take jazz walks, chasses and the pas de bourrée on the diagonal so you get used to moving through space, drawing the long lines that make a routine read from the back of a hall.
First Turns, First Kicks
Your first proper go at a pirouette and a kick. Spotting keeps the walls from sliding past, and we work on sending the leg up under command rather than flinging it and hoping.
Tonight's Combination
A compact theatre-jazz combination goes on next, set to something off a cast recording or the radio, handed to you a few counts at a time so it sticks by the end of the hour.
Bright, Then Unwind
We run the whole thing full-out, performing it rather than marking it, then wind down through slow, deep stretches so nothing seizes up before you are back next week.
About Jazz Classes in Preston
Picture jazz as the scaffold the rest of stage dance is bolted to — the technique quietly propping up musical theatre, commercial routines and a good chunk of what tours through the city each year. Our jazz classes in Preston are the way up onto that scaffold: control over your isolations, turns that actually finish, kicks with real height, and the stage instinct to pick up choreography a beat before the person beside you.
Preston gives the style somewhere fitting to grow. We work from studios around Fishergate, Friargate and Winckley Square, with the Harris — the great columned museum standing over the Flag Market, freshly reimagined — lending the whole centre a genuinely theatrical backdrop. We point to that atmosphere rather than claim any tie to it, but it does mean the vocabulary you pick up here is the one stage dancers across central Lancashire already speak.
And no, you will not be attempting the splits on your first evening — jazz simply is not taught that way. The early sessions go on posture and steadiness, taking the body apart one isolation at a time, and only later do the turns and the tricky syncopated combinations arrive. Every visit is a flat £8, paid on the night, with no form to fill in and nothing to commit to.

Why Choose Jazz in Preston?
A Faster Learner Everywhere
Jazz hammers the isolations, spotting and timing sitting under almost every stage style, so routines in any other class start landing sooner than they used to.
Confidence That Carries
So much of jazz is playing to the back row, and that projection quietly follows you off the floor — into a meeting or a speech as readily as onto a stage.
Lines You Can Actually See
Crisp shapes, turns that arrive where you meant them and kicks that land on target give jazz a precision that feels great the first time a combination clicks.
More Laughs Than Drill
For all the discipline, the room is good fun — the character in the numbers and the shared scramble to nail an eight-count keep the hour a long way from stern.
Your Jazz Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Hold Yourself Well
Posture Comes First
The opening weeks are about how you carry yourself — a lifted, settled frame and isolations you can steer — because that is what makes everything added later read as clean.
Small Sure Gains
You go home from night one with a couple of jazz walks and one isolation that genuinely does what you tell it, not a blurry half-routine gone by morning.
Start Covering Ground
Moving On Purpose
Chasses and the pas de bourrée begin carrying you across the floor, and the lines you drilled on the spot start to look like real travelling steps.
Turns Stop Wobbling
Spotting turns the pirouette from a dizzy guess into something repeatable, and a single clean rotation becomes reliably yours.
Perform, Don't Mark
Attitude Switches On
You stop counting under your breath and start selling the routine, letting the character of the music show in how you move.
Combinations Click
The turns, kicks and travelling steps stitch into a full combination, and the first time it flows end to end is genuinely satisfying.
Ready For More
The Door Widens
With jazz technique under you, styles like commercial, musical-theatre and heels stop looking out of reach and start looking like the obvious next class.
Yours To Keep
Weeks in, the warm-up runs itself and you pick up choreography quicker than you would have believed on that first cautious evening.
Jazz in Preston FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
I've never danced before — is that a problem? +
Not at all. Our jazz classes in Preston assume no experience, no flexibility and no technique — we start with posture and simple isolations, so an absolute beginner is exactly who these sessions are for.
What does a class cost? +
A flat £8 per session, paid at the door. No membership, no block to buy up front and no contract — you cover only the classes you turn up to.
Do I need to be flexible or able to do the splits? +
No. Flexibility grows slowly and safely over time as a side effect of the work — the splits are never a requirement, and beginners spend their first weeks nowhere near them.
What should I wear? +
Leggings or joggers and a fitted top you can move in. Bare feet, jazz shoes or soft trainers all work for a first class — you can pick up proper jazz shoes later if you decide to stick with it.
Where in Preston do the classes run? +
From studios around the city centre — the Fishergate, Friargate and Winckley Square side, near the Flag Market and the Harris. Your exact venue is confirmed when you book.
Is jazz not just for kids or trained dancers? +
Not here. This is an adult class, pitched at 17 to 75, built specifically for grown-ups starting fresh rather than for children or seasoned performers.
How is jazz different from ballet or contemporary? +
Jazz shares ballet's precision but trades the formality for punch, rhythm and performance — think show numbers and commercial routines. It is the technique underneath a huge amount of stage and music-video dance.
Will this help with other dance styles? +
Very much so. The isolations, spotting and timing you build in jazz sit under commercial, musical-theatre, heels and more, so they make almost every other class easier to pick up.
Can I come on my own? +
Absolutely — most people do. Jazz is danced individually rather than in pairs, so arriving solo is completely normal and you will be among plenty of other first-timers.
