Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–12 min

Barre and breath

We begin at the barre with pliés and tendus, letting the ankles, knees and spine wake up gently while you find where your weight actually sits over your feet.

12–26 min

Placement and pull-up

Time on posture: lengthening through the crown, dropping the shoulders and holding a lifted centre, the invisible work that makes everything after it look easy.

26–40 min

Into the centre

We leave the barre and repeat the same shapes unsupported, so balance stops being something the barre lends you and becomes something you own.

40–52 min

A line across the room

Simple travelling steps — a chassé, a balancé, a controlled walk on to demi-pointe — strung together with the even spacing the Harris columns keep as they march across the Flag Market.

52–60 min

Reverence

We close with a slow, formal curtsey and stretch, the traditional thank-you to the room that also lets the heart rate settle before you head back out.

About Ballet Classes in Preston

Ballet is the grammar underneath almost every other dance: the turnout, the placement and the vocabulary of positions that give a body its line. Our Preston beginners' class teaches that grammar patiently and without spectacle — no performance pressure, no wall of mirrors judging you, just the barre, the count and steady repetition until the shapes feel like yours.

Preston already has a genuine classical thread running through it. The Harris on the Flag Market, with its monumental Greek-Revival steps and columns, is the city's own daily lesson in symmetry and line — we borrow it as an image, standing tall and evenly spaced, whenever we talk about carriage. There are respected ballet and pointe teachers in the Preston area too, Fitchett Proll among them; we mention the local scene only so you know it exists, and we are not affiliated with them nor do we hand on their details.

Sessions run from our city-centre room in the Fishergate and Friargate stretch, close to the Flag Market and the bus station, with a second space over on the Fulwood side. Adults travel in from Penwortham, Broughton, Cottam and Bamber Bridge; the West Coast Main Line station keeps the centre easy to reach, and there is no tram to work around.

Why Choose Ballet in Preston?

Posture you carry out the door

The placement work quietly rebuilds how you stand and sit, and most people notice it in daily life long before they notice it at the barre.

Strength without the strain

Ballet builds deep, controlled strength through the feet, core and back at your own pace, with none of the pounding of high-impact classes.

Line you can actually see

We break the positions down slowly so you understand what a clean line is and how to find yours, rather than just copying the person in front.

Flat £8, no term to sign

Pay eight pounds on the night, one class at a time — no term fees, no uniform to buy and no commitment beyond the week you turn up.

Your Ballet Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

First few weeks

The five positions

Your feet and arms learn the base positions until moving between them stops needing a diagram running in your head.

Where your weight lives

You find your centre over the balls of the feet, the single thing that makes balance possible later on.

02

Leaving the barre

Balance on your own

Shapes you first met holding the barre start to hold up unsupported in the middle of the room.

Turnout, honestly

You learn to rotate from the hip within your own range rather than forcing the feet, which is what protects the knees.

03

Moving with control

Travelling steps

Chassés, balancés and soft walks on to demi-pointe let you cover the floor smoothly instead of stepping stiffly.

Arms that belong

Port de bras stops being an afterthought and starts finishing every movement the way it is supposed to.

04

Dancing, not drilling

Short enchaînements

Steps link into little sequences set to a musical phrase, and suddenly it feels like ballet rather than exercises.

A line to be proud of

The carriage you have built shows up whole — tall, even and unhurried, the Harris steps rendered in a human being.

Ballet in Preston FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

How much is a class, and am I tied in? +

Each class is a flat £8 paid on the night. There is no term fee, no membership and nothing to sign — you attend the weeks that suit you and leave it at that.

Am I too old or too stiff to begin ballet? +

No. Adults start ballet in their thirties, fifties and beyond every year. We work within your range and build flexibility gradually; stiffness is a starting point, not a barrier.

What should I wear? +

Fitted, stretchy clothing so we can see your line, plus socks or soft ballet shoes. Ballet shoes help but are not essential for a first class — thick socks are fine to begin.

Do I need any previous experience? +

None at all. The beginners' class starts from the first position and the first plié; everyone in the room is learning the same foundations from scratch.

Where in Preston is the class? +

Our main studio is in the Fishergate and Friargate part of the city centre, near the Flag Market and the bus station, with a second room on the Fulwood side. The exact address comes through when you book.

How do I get there? +

Preston station is on the West Coast Main Line and a short walk from the centre, and the bus station sits beside our city-centre room. There is no tram, so plan by bus, rail or car; central parking fills and closes early when Preston North End play at Deepdale.

Will I be doing pointe work? +

Not as a beginner. Pointe demands years of strength first, so our classes stay in soft shoes on flat and demi-pointe. We focus on the foundations that would eventually make pointe safe.

What ages is the class for? +

This is an adult beginners' class, roughly 17 and upward, with no upper limit. Older beginners are genuinely welcome and common.

How do I book? +

Send us your details through the form on this page and we will reply with the current day, time and address so you can plan your first class.
