Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0-10 min

Warm the Swagger

We loosen shoulders, hips and neck to a low, brass-heavy track and rehearse the walk - unhurried, chin level, taking up space on purpose. The warm-up is where the attitude gets switched on before any routine appears.

10-22 min

The Tease Toolkit

Now the signature moves: the glove peel, the shimmy, the chair roll and the over-the-shoulder look. Each is drilled slowly, because in burlesque the pause and the reveal carry more than the move itself ever does.

22-36 min

String the Routine

We link the pieces into a short number, mapping every accent so the cheekiness lands on the beat. You learn to play a crowd - or a single mirror - and hold a look a breath longer than feels comfortable.

36-48 min

Prop and Persona

A boa, a fan or a hat becomes an extension of the arm, and you settle on the character you fancy wearing for the night. Confidence is the real costume; the feathers are only there to help.

48-60 min

Run It Full Out

We perform the number end to end, cheering each other through, then cool down. You leave standing an inch taller, whether or not you ever set foot on a stage.

About Burlesque Classes in Cheltenham

Burlesque is the art of the slow reveal - part vintage cabaret, part stand-up swagger, all built on the wink rather than the routine. It rewards personality over splits, which is exactly why the room fills with every age and shape and why nobody is asked to be bendy or brave on arrival.

Cheltenham lends the style a fitting backdrop. Montpellier's caryatids and wrought-iron balconies, the columned grandeur of the Pittville Pump Room and the Regency curve of the Promenade set a tone of poised, dressed-up glamour that burlesque leans into happily. When you want the night out to match, the bars and late venues of the Brewery Quarter are a short stroll from the centre.

To be straight about it, Cheltenham has no resident burlesque troupe we are pretending to run - this is an honest weekly class led by a choreographer who knows the craft. You will peel a glove, not a stitch more than you choose, and everything is drilled at your comfort level. Wear leggings and a vest, bring heels you can stand in if you own them, and we send the town-centre studio address once you have booked.

Why Choose Burlesque in Cheltenham?

Confidence That Sticks

The strut you rehearse in class has a way of following you out of the door - into a meeting, a night out or a mirror you used to hurry past.

Every Shape Belongs

Burlesque was built to celebrate real bodies, not audition-hall ones. There is no physique to earn first; you turn up as you are and the style meets you there.

Play, Not Perfection

The wink outranks the high kick. It is permission to be theatrical and a bit ridiculous, which turns out to be brilliant medicine for a stiff week.

A Night-Out Skill

Learn a number you can actually deploy - at a hen do, a birthday or your own front room - and a walk that reads as certainty from across any bar.

Your Burlesque Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

Owning the Walk

First Sessions

Everything starts with posture and the walk - shoulders down, spine long, eye line steady. Get comfortable being looked at without rushing, and the moves that follow suddenly have somewhere to live.

What to Wear

Leggings or shorts and a fitted top, plus a chunky heel if you have one, though bare feet or trainers are entirely fine to begin. A robe or shirt for glove and layer work is a nice extra.

02

The Signature Moves

Building the Kit

Shimmies, hip rolls, the glove peel and the classic chair work arrive one at a time, each broken down slowly. The emphasis lands on control and timing rather than speed or flash.

Selling the Pause

You practise the hardest part of the form - the stillness before the reveal - learning to hold a look and let anticipation do the work the movement cannot.

03

Character and Prop

Finding a Persona

You settle on the version of yourself the routine wears - sultry, comic, brassy or coolly aloof - and let that choice steer how every accent is played.

Feathers and Fans

Boas, gloves and fans become part of the phrasing, adding flourish and framing the reveal. Handling a prop with ease is its own small, satisfying skill.

04

Taking the Stage

A Whole Number

You link the vocabulary into a full routine, danced start to finish with a room cheering you on. Whether it ever meets an audience is completely your call.

Where Next

Keep polishing the same number, chase a themed hen session for a one-off group blowout, or bank the confidence and let it quietly reshape how you carry yourself.

Burlesque in Cheltenham FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I have to take anything off in a burlesque class? +

Not a thing. The classic move is a glove peel and that is exactly where it stops - you stay fully clothed the entire time. Burlesque here is about attitude, timing and tease, and nothing beyond that is ever asked of you.

I am nervous and not a natural performer - is that a problem? +

It is practically the norm, and the whole class is built for it. We start with a walk, not a routine, and grow the confidence gradually in a warm, no-judgement room where everyone arrived feeling much the same.

Is there a body type this suits best? +

None whatsoever - that is the founding idea of burlesque. Every age, size and shape works the same material, and the style was made to celebrate real bodies rather than filter them at the door.

Do I need heels to join in? +

No. Heels add line and drama if you fancy them, but plenty of the room dances in bare feet or trainers, especially early on. Bring a pair you can genuinely balance in and only wear them when you feel ready.

Does Cheltenham have its own burlesque troupe behind this? +

No, and we would not dress it up as one. This is an honest weekly drop-in led by a choreographer who knows the craft - no resident cabaret company, just proper teaching and a good laugh.

What does a single class cost? +

A flat eight pounds, settled on the night, with no joining fee or block booking hanging over you. Miss a week and you simply lose nothing - the same rate applies to every Dance Centre UK class across Cheltenham.

Which part of town are classes in? +

A town-centre studio close to the Promenade and Montpellier, handy for the bars of the Brewery Quarter if you fancy carrying the glamour on afterwards. The exact address lands in your inbox once you are booked.

How do I get there in the evening? +

Central car parks such as Regent Arcade sit minutes away, and there is a taxi rank on the Promenade. Cheltenham Spa station is about a mile west if you are coming by train, so allow a short walk or hop in a cab.

Can we book a private group or hen version? +

Yes. Beyond the weekly drop-in we run one-off themed sessions for hens, birthdays and work groups, come-to-you across Cheltenham and Gloucestershire. Ask about a burlesque party and we will tailor the number to your crew.
