Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm And Lengthen
We open by warming the whole body and drawing the lines long — spine mobile, ankles awake, hamstrings persuaded rather than forced. Jazz lives on stretched limbs and clean shapes, so a proper warm-up is not a formality here; it is where the evening's look actually starts.
The Vocabulary
Next we drill the words the whole style is spelt with — jazz hands and jazz square, pivot, kick-ball-change, a controlled contraction and release. Small pieces, taught named and taught slowly, so that when a combination calls for them later you already know what your body is being asked to fetch.
Across The Floor
Now we travel. Chassés, pas de bourrée and a kick line carry you corner to corner, which is where jazz stops feeling like exercises in a spot and starts feeling like performance covering ground. It also quietly builds the stamina the routine at the end will lean on.
Building The Number
The pieces get assembled into a short show-style number with actual musicality — accents landing where the music asks, a little attack, a pause held on purpose. We layer it a phrase at a time and repeat generously, because confidence in jazz comes from knowing precisely what lands on which beat.
Run It And Release
We run the number full-out a couple of times so you feel it as one continuous thing rather than a string of counts, then cool down and lengthen out the muscles that did the work, ready for the stroll back down the Promenade.
About Jazz Classes in Cheltenham
Every May, Cheltenham hands its Regency squares and the Montpellier gardens over to one of the country's best-known jazz festivals — marquees on the green, brass drifting across Imperial Square, the town briefly swinging. That is music rather than dance, but it does mean the word 'jazz' carries a certain weight in this particular town, and it is a lovely backdrop for learning the dance form that grew up alongside the sound.
This is jazz dance in the theatrical, Broadway sense — sharp lines, big musicality, the vocabulary behind a hundred stage numbers and music videos — taught as a beginners' hour for adults. You need no prior training, no flexibility to speak of and no performing background. What you get instead is the grammar of the style built patiently from the floor up, in a room where missing a count is expected rather than remarked upon.
We run near the town centre, around the Montpellier and Promenade side, with the exact room confirmed when you get in touch. Each class is a flat £8 on the night — no term to buy into, no membership — so you can treat it as a one-off curiosity or a standing weekly date. Bring soft shoes or bare feet, clothes you can stretch in, and a willingness to point your toes at strangers.

Why Choose Jazz in Cheltenham?
Lines You Can See
Jazz teaches you to finish a shape — pointed toe, lifted chest, clear angle — and that habit of completing a movement shows up in every other style you ever try afterwards.
Musicality, Trained
You stop merely keeping time and start playing with it — hitting an accent, holding a pause, riding a phrase. It is the difference between doing the steps and actually performing them.
Real Stamina
The across-the-floor work builds genuine cardio and control without a single machine in sight, so the short number at the end feels powered rather than survived by the time term settles in.
A Taste Of The Stage
Every hour ends on a proper show-style number, so you get the small thrill of performing something with attack and shape — no audience, no pressure, just you and a room enjoying it.
Your Jazz Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Your First Class
The Strange Bits
Jazz hands and a deliberate contraction feel faintly absurd for about ten minutes. Then the music starts, everyone commits together, and the self-consciousness has nowhere left to stand.
The Win
You leave with a handful of named steps and one short phrase that already looks like something. The vocabulary gives beginners a satisfying sense of progress fast.
The First Few Weeks
Settling In
The warm-up stops feeling long and starts feeling necessary. Your pivots find their spot and the across-the-floor lengths leave you less winded each time.
The Sticking Point
Musicality — landing the accent exactly where the music wants it, not a beat late. It comes, but it is the thing that separates the hour's first half from its second.
A Term In
Opening Up
Longer combinations, cleaner turns, and numbers with genuine style and dynamic range. You start dancing the music rather than merely surviving the counts.
The Routine
The weekly class becomes a small fixed pleasure in the diary. Eight pounds on the night, drop out for a busy festival fortnight, slot straight back in with no fuss.
Further On
Where It Goes
Jazz is a gateway — plenty of dancers branch into our commercial, heels or tap hours from here, because the lines and musicality transfer straight across.
The Confidence
You carry yourself differently. The habit of finishing a shape and owning a beat quietly follows you onto any dance floor, festival marquee included.
Jazz in Cheltenham FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Is this the music or the dance? +
The dance. Cheltenham's famous Jazz Festival is a music event, and we simply enjoy sharing the name with it. What we teach is jazz dance — the theatrical, Broadway-style movement full of sharp lines, kicks and musicality that grew up alongside the sound.
Do I need any experience or flexibility? +
Neither. This is a genuine beginners' hour for adults, and the warm-up is designed to build whatever flexibility the steps need. People arrive stiff from a desk job every week and manage the whole class perfectly well.
What should I wear and what goes on my feet? +
Clothes you can stretch and move in, and either soft jazz shoes, ballet-style slippers or bare feet — trainers are too grippy for the pivots. No special kit is required to start; comfort matters far more than gear.
How much does it cost? +
A flat £8 per class, paid on the night. There is no term fee, no membership and no contract. You are free to come once, come now and then, or make it a standing weekly booking — the rate stays the same.
Where in Cheltenham do the classes run? +
Near the town centre, around the Montpellier and Promenade side, with the precise room confirmed when you enquire. We send the current venue and time by reply rather than parking a placeholder address on the page.
Is jazz dance a good workout? +
Genuinely, yes. The across-the-floor travelling work and the full-out run of the number get the heart going properly, and you build control and stamina without ever touching gym equipment.
I'm worried I'll be the oldest or least able there. +
Our adult beginners' hours run a wide age range and a wider range of ability, all starting from the same place. Nobody is watching the room to rank it — everyone is far too busy chasing their own count.
Can I come by myself? +
Absolutely, and most people do. Jazz needs no partner, so a solo arrival is completely normal. You will be one of a whole room of individuals who turned up on their own.
Do festival or race weeks disrupt anything? +
Occasionally. Cheltenham's festival and race weeks put real pressure on parking and traffic, so a class might shift or pause once in a while. We always give notice by email, and paying per night means a missed week never costs you a penny.
