Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Breathe and Mobilise
We open with a slow, breath-led warm-up that mobilises the spine, hips and shoulders and switches attention inward. It gets the body pliable and the mind present, which matters in a style where how you move is as important as which move you make.
Floorwork Foundations
We spend real time on the floor — rolling, spiralling and practising how to lower and lift your own weight safely. These fall-and-recovery basics are the backbone of contemporary, and learning them well keeps the flashier material comfortable and injury-free.
Travelling and Phrase Work
Movement leaves the spot as we cross the floor with swings, reaches and changes of direction, then string them into a short phrase. We rehearse the transitions until the momentum carries you from one shape into the next without a visible seam.
Dynamics and Expression
Here the phrase gains its texture — where it suspends, where it collapses, where it drives hard and where it barely breathes. We work on letting intention colour the movement so the same steps can read tender one moment and urgent the next.
Full Phrase and Cool-Down
We run the complete phrase a few times with the music, giving you the space to actually dance it rather than count it, then wind down with lengthening stretches. You leave loose, clear-headed and with a sequence that felt like it came from somewhere real.
About Contemporary Classes in Blackpool
Contemporary is the most expressive corner of the timetable — grounded, flowing movement built on breath, weight and the pull of gravity. It borrows the discipline of ballet and modern technique but happily breaks their rules, dropping to the floor, riding fall-and-recovery and letting a phrase carry a feeling rather than just a shape. There's real technique underneath it, yet the goal is always the same: to move in a way that means something.
Blackpool is more than a ballroom town, and contemporary proves it. There's a genuine appetite for stage dance here — House of Wingz has fed youth-arts, street and contemporary energy into the town since 2006, while the Grand Theatre, Frank Matcham's Grade II* masterpiece of 1894, brings touring dance to Blackpool audiences, including hip-hop and contemporary theatre work through visits from Breakin' Convention. Our contemporary dance classes in Blackpool draw on that hunger for movement with something to say; we reference the local scene with respect and take our inspiration from these venues rather than claiming any endorsement or affiliation.
A class moves through a gentle mobilising warm-up, floorwork foundations, travelling phrases and finally the expressive dynamics that give the style its soul, before a proper cool-down. Bare feet or grippy socks work best, comfortable layers let you move and slide, and no experience is needed — we teach the technique step by step and never rush the room. Your studio is confirmed when you book, and every drop-in stays a flat £8.

Why Choose Contemporary in Blackpool?
Freedom to Express
Contemporary hands you permission to move honestly, without a rigid right-and-wrong at every step. For a lot of people it becomes the one hour of the week where thoughts get to leave the head and travel through the body instead.
Strength and Flexibility
All that floorwork, control and travelling builds deep, functional strength through the core, back and legs, while the reaching and lengthening keeps you supple. It's demanding movement dressed up as flow, and your body feels the difference.
A Mindful Reset
The breath focus and inward attention make the class quietly meditative, and dancers regularly describe it as the best stress-release in their week. You arrive carrying the day and tend to leave a good deal lighter than you came.
A Foundation for Everything
The weight, control and musicality you build here feed straight into every other style, from lyrical and jazz to commercial. Many dancers find contemporary makes them more articulate and more confident right across the timetable.
Your Contemporary Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Getting Grounded
Making Friends With the Floor
We start with the basics of getting down and back up with control, because comfort on the floor unlocks everything else. Early sessions are all about trusting your own weight and breathing through the movement.
What to Wear
Comfortable layers you can slide and stretch in are ideal, and bare feet or grippy socks are the norm. Bring water and leave the trainers at the door — contemporary lives in contact with the floor.
Moving Through Space
Longer Phrases
Individual movements begin to link into travelling phrases, and you build the stamina and spatial awareness to keep momentum going across the whole studio rather than staying rooted to one spot.
Finding Flow
We work the transitions hardest — the joins between shapes — so the phrase stops looking like separate poses and starts to move like one continuous, breathing thing.
Dancing With Intention
Adding Meaning
Beyond the steps you start making choices about dynamics and intention, so a phrase can read gentle or fierce depending on how you shade it. This is where contemporary becomes genuinely yours.
Musicality
We deepen your relationship with the music — riding it, resisting it, sitting in its silences — which is what lifts a phrase from technically correct to genuinely moving.
Your Own Voice
Improvisation
Many dancers grow into short improvised passages, learning to trust their instincts and generate movement of their own rather than only receiving set choreography from the front.
Where It Goes
Some keep contemporary as a weekly reset; others pursue performance or feed the technique into other styles, and we'll happily talk through gentle, pressure-free ways to take the next step.
Contemporary in Blackpool FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need previous dance experience? +
No. Our contemporary classes are structured for absolute beginners, teaching the floorwork and technique gradually from the ground up. You'll never be thrown into complex material cold — the room moves at a pace that keeps everyone included.
What exactly is contemporary dance? +
It's an expressive style that grew out of modern dance and ballet but breaks their formality, using breath, weight and floorwork to let movement carry emotion. Think grounded, flowing and personal rather than rigid or showy — technique in service of feeling.
What should I wear? +
Comfortable layers you can move, stretch and slide in work best, with bare feet or grippy socks rather than shoes. Bring water and skip anything restrictive — you'll spend real time in contact with the floor, so free movement matters more than looks.
Where in Blackpool are the classes held? +
We run from a central studio near the town-centre Winter Gardens and Tower area, with a South Shore option too; your exact venue is confirmed at booking. The Promenade tramway and Blackpool North station both leave you a short walk or a quick tram ride away.
How much is a class? +
A drop-in is a flat £8, with no membership and no commitment. You pay only for the sessions you attend, so contemporary can slot around a busy week without you ever feeling locked into a course you might miss.
Is contemporary a workout? +
More than it looks. Controlling your own weight through floorwork and travelling phrases builds serious core and leg strength, and a full class leaves you pleasantly worked — it's strengthening and lengthening at the same time, all disguised as flow.
I'm not very flexible — is that a problem? +
Not in the slightest. Flexibility is something the class builds over time, not a ticket you need at the door. We work within your range and it gradually opens up; plenty of dancers arrive stiff and are amazed how much freer they feel after a term.
Is there an age limit? +
Our adult classes run from 17 to 75, and the style adapts beautifully across that span. Because you control the depth and size of each movement, contemporary suits a wide range of ages and bodies without anyone feeling out of place.
Can we book a private group? +
Yes. While contemporary is a little different from the usual party booking, we can put on a private session for a group who fancy something more expressive and reflective — pop your date and numbers into the enquiry form and we'll shape it to suit.
