Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Posture and Hold

Every ballroom evening opens with the shape two people carry — a lifted spine, an easy connection through the hands, weight poised over the front of the foot — because the frame you build here is what lets a couple travel as one.

10–25 mins

A Gliding Waltz

We take the waltz first, walking its rise-and-fall in slow motion around the room so you feel how the smooth family floats and sweeps into its turns rather than stepping on the spot.

25–40 mins

Into the Latin

The tempo lifts for the cha-cha, all crisp little steps and a playful swivel through the hip, giving you a real feel for both sides of ballroom inside one hour on the floor.

40–50 mins

Swapping Around

Couples rotate around the room and each dancer takes a turn leading and following, which is precisely how a new frame learns to stay steady with any partner it meets.

50–60 mins

Putting It Together

We link the night's figures into one continuous run and dance it right through — the point where the counting fades out and what you are doing quietly starts to resemble proper ballroom.

About Ballroom Classes in Blackpool

Ballroom is really two worlds sharing one floor: the travelling smooth dances such as the waltz and quickstep, and the sharper Latin numbers like the cha-cha and rumba. Our beginner ballroom classes in Blackpool introduce you to both from the very first evening, starting with the hold, the posture and the simple weight changes that make a couple move together, so nobody is expected to arrive knowing a single figure.

There is nowhere in Britain that carries ballroom quite like this town. Every year the world's oldest and most celebrated championship, the Blackpool Dance Festival, fills the Empress Ballroom at the Winter Gardens as it has done since 1920, and the Tower Ballroom's famous sprung floor of tens of thousands of oak and mahogany blocks has drawn dancers since Frank Matcham opened it in 1899. Blackpool genuinely is the ballroom capital of the world, and that heritage is the spirit we teach in — though we should be clear that we take it purely as inspiration and have no connection to, access to, or endorsement from the Tower, the Winter Gardens or the Festival.

Our own sessions run at a friendly central studio, confirmed once you book, and you can turn up on your own or bring a partner — the room swaps couples around either way. Reaching us is easy: the Promenade tramway and the buses link the whole seafront, and both Blackpool North and Blackpool South stations are close by. If you would rather learn among friends, we also bring the full ballroom class out to groups right across the Fylde coast.

Why Choose Ballroom in Blackpool?

Both Halves in One Night

You get the gliding smooth dances and the fiery Latin ones side by side each week, so you finish with the whole spread of ballroom rather than one narrow slice of it.

Dance in the Sport's Home Town

Blackpool is where the world's championship dancers gather, and there is something quietly special about learning your first box step in the ballroom capital of the world itself.

Frame and Carriage

The upright poise ballroom asks for tidies up everyday posture and balance, and it is the one thing that most makes a beginner look as though they already belong on the floor.

We Travel to You

Birthdays, hen dos and celebrations anywhere across Blackpool and the Fylde coast can have the whole ballroom class delivered straight to their own venue.

Your Ballroom Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–3

Finding Your Frame

First Figures

The waltz box, a starter cha-cha and the hold that carries them, walked slowly until your feet no longer wait for the count.

What to Wear

Smooth-soled shoes that pivot without catching, plus comfortable clothes — a low steady heel helps but is never required.

Weeks 4–8

Moving as a Couple

Lead and Follow

Learning to send and read a lead through the frame, changing partners so it holds firm whoever you dance with next.

Covering Ground

Taking the smooth dances travelling around the floor with rise and fall, so the waltz begins to sail instead of stall.

Months 3–4

Building a Repertoire

Fresh Figures

Underarm turns, spins and a second Latin dance come in, widening the runs you can string together across the room.

Feeling the Music

Matching each dance to its own character, so a quickstep skips along lightly while a rumba stays slow and deliberate.

Month 5+

Dancing With Ease

Full Routines

Threading figures into a flowing sequence you can dance start to finish without pausing to work out the next move.

Your Own Poise

Letting a little of your personality into the frame, until the carriage feels like your own posture rather than a rule to obey.

Ballroom in Blackpool FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need to bring a partner? +

No, and a good number of people arrive on their own. The class rotates couples through the hour so there is always someone to hold the frame with, and you practise both the lead and the follow. Anyone who prefers to stay with their own partner is very welcome to.

Which dances are actually covered? +

Both sides of ballroom — smooth dances like the waltz and quickstep and Latin ones such as the cha-cha and rumba — normally two in a session. As a beginner you sample the whole family instead of grinding away at one dance for weeks.

Is this really a class for Blackpool locals, not competitors? +

Absolutely. Blackpool may host the world championships, but our evenings are ordinary friendly beginner sessions for people who have never danced. We simply enjoy teaching the basics in the town that made ballroom famous.

I have two left feet — will I manage? +

You will. We begin with the hold and the plainest box step and grow it gently from there. Nobody is chasing competition-standard footwork; the goal is to have you moving happily around the floor by the time the evening ends.

What should I put on my feet? +

A smooth-soled shoe that turns cleanly is best, and a low steady heel helps a little but is optional. Steer clear of rubber-soled trainers, which grab the floor and jolt the knee mid-turn. Loose comfortable clothing does the rest.

How much is it and are there contracts? +

It is a straight £8 paid on the evening, with nothing due in advance. There is no membership and no course to sign up for — you simply come to whichever sessions suit you and settle up as you go.

Where in Blackpool do the classes run? +

At a central studio within reach of the town centre and the Golden Mile seafront, with the exact address sent once you book. It sits handy for the Promenade and only a short hop from the main stations.

How do I get there without driving? +

Easily — Blackpool has its historic Promenade tramway running the length of the seafront, plus a full bus network, and Blackpool North and Blackpool South stations bring in trains from across the North West. The tram or a bus will drop you close by.

Could you run a class for my group or hen party? +

Gladly. A ballroom session taken to your own venue is one of our most popular group bookings, and we cover the whole of Blackpool and the Fylde coast. Send us your date and rough numbers and we will sort the rest.
