Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Warm-Up and Alignment

We begin by waking up the body and finding the classical posture — a long neck, dropped shoulders and a lifted centre — the quiet alignment that makes even a simple movement look like ballet.

10–25 mins

At the Barre

Holding the barre for support, we work through pliés and tendus, the slow bends and stretches that build the turnout, control and strength every step later depends on.

25–40 mins

Arms and Épaulement

We add the soft curved arm positions and the gentle tilt of the head and shoulders, learning the port de bras that gives ballet its unmistakable flowing grace.

40–50 mins

Into the Centre

Stepping away from the barre, we try the same shapes without support, finding the balance and poise that come from holding your own line in the middle of the floor.

50–60 mins

A Simple Enchaînement

We link a few steps into a short, graceful sequence and dance it across the room, the moment the separate exercises begin to feel like real, connected ballet.

About Ballet Classes in Blackpool

Ballet is the discipline that underpins almost every other dance, and it is far more approachable as an adult than most people imagine. Our ballet classes in Blackpool are built for the complete beginner, starting at the barre with the turnout, the plié and the simple arm lines that everything else grows from, taken at a pace that never assumes you danced as a child.

Blackpool has a longer relationship with formal dance than its seaside reputation lets on. Studios such as The Dance Place, teaching here since 1983, and AVR Dance out at the Layton Institute have kept classical training alive in the town for decades, and the Grand Theatre — Matcham's 1894 masterpiece — has hosted touring ballet on its stage many times over. There are also gentle over-55s ballet sessions under the nationwide Silver Swans banner for those returning to movement later in life. We are an independent beginners' class rather than part of any of these, but we share their belief that classical technique belongs to everyone.

Our sessions run at a central studio confirmed when you book, with no partner and no prior training required — just yourself and something comfortable to stretch in. Reaching us is straightforward on the Promenade tramway or the local buses, with Blackpool North and Blackpool South stations both close at hand. We can also bring an introductory ballet class to groups across the Fylde coast.

Why Choose Ballet in Blackpool?

Posture and Poise

Nothing improves how you carry yourself quite like ballet — the alignment you build at the barre quietly follows you off the floor and into everyday life.

Strength Without the Gym

Those slow controlled movements build deep core strength, flexibility and balance, giving you a workout that feels graceful rather than gruelling.

Never Too Late to Start

This is a genuine adult beginners' class — most people here never danced as children, and the town's over-55s Silver Swans tradition shows ballet truly has no age limit.

We Come to Your Group

Introductory ballet sessions can be brought to birthdays, celebrations and get-togethers anywhere across Blackpool and the Fylde coast.

Your Ballet Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–3

The Basics

First Positions

The five positions of the feet, a gentle plié and the classical posture, practised at the barre until they start to feel natural.

What to Wear

Something you can stretch in — leggings and a fitted top — with socks or soft ballet shoes; no leotard needed to begin.

Weeks 4–8

Building Control

Barre Work

Tendus, rises and slow stretches that develop the turnout and the strength your balance will later rely on.

The Arms

Learning the soft port de bras, so your upper body flows with the legs instead of moving separately.

Months 3–4

Into the Centre

Balance

Taking the barre exercises into the middle of the room, finding poise without anything to hold on to.

Linking Steps

Joining movements into short enchaînements, so the technique starts to look like continuous dancing.

Month 5+

Dancing With Grace

Longer Sequences

Flowing combinations travelled across the floor, danced with control from beginning to end.

Your Own Line

Letting expression into the shapes, until the poise feels like yours rather than a set of positions.

Ballet in Blackpool FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Am I too old to start ballet? +

Not in the least. Our class is built specifically for adult beginners, and most people in the room never danced as children. Blackpool even has over-55s ballet sessions under the Silver Swans programme, so there really is no age at which it is too late to begin.

Do I need any dance experience? +

None whatsoever. We start at the very beginning with posture and the basic positions, and everything is explained and built up slowly, so a complete first-timer can follow along comfortably from day one.

Do I need a partner? +

No — ballet is danced individually, so you come on your own and work at your own pace. There is no partnering involved, and you are never put on the spot in front of the room.

What should I wear and what shoes do I need? +

Anything you can move and stretch in, such as leggings and a fitted top, works fine. Socks are fine to start, though soft ballet shoes are worth picking up later. There is no need for a leotard or any special kit for a beginner.

Will it make me more flexible and stronger? +

Yes, noticeably. The slow controlled movements build core strength, balance and flexibility over the weeks, and many people find their everyday posture improves as a happy side effect.

How much does it cost? +

A flat £8 paid on the night, with nothing owed in advance. There is no membership and no term to sign up for — you attend the sessions that suit you and pay each time you come.

Where in Blackpool are the classes held? +

At a central studio near the town centre, with the exact address confirmed when you book. It is within easy reach of the seafront and the main stations.

How do I get there without driving? +

Blackpool's Promenade tramway runs the length of the seafront and the buses cover the town, while Blackpool North and Blackpool South stations bring trains from across the North West. A tram or bus will drop you close to the studio.

Can you teach a group or private class? +

Yes. We can bring an introductory ballet session to your own venue for a group, birthday or celebration, and we cover Blackpool and the wider Fylde coast. Just tell us your date and numbers.
