Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Barre Warm-Up

Pliés and tendus at the barre to wake up the legs and feet, and to set the upright, lifted posture the whole class rests on.

10–25 mins

Barre Work

Slow, controlled exercises — dégagés, rises and simple ports de bras — building the strength and alignment that centre work depends on.

25–40 mins

Centre Practice

Away from the barre for balance and adage, finding your own line with nothing to hold, at a pace that expects no prior training.

40–50 mins

Across the Floor

Gentle travelling steps and a first taste of turns, learning how ballet moves through space rather than staying on the spot.

50–60 mins

Révérence & Stretch

A short, graceful closing sequence and a proper stretch — the traditional way a ballet class says thank you and winds down.

About Ballet Classes in Norwich

Ballet is the grammar underneath almost every other style — the alignment, turnout and quiet strength that make everything else look easy. An adult beginners' class treats the barre as brand new: the opening weeks are about standing tall and finding your balance, then a single idea is added each session so the vocabulary builds without ever rushing.

Norwich takes its ballet seriously. Guildhall School of Dancing on Earlham Road runs ISTD work that includes adult ballet, and The Garage on Chapel Field North programmes classes right across the arts — a city with a real classical habit rather than a passing one. Ours is the grown-up beginners' strand, taught near the Lanes and out towards Riverside.

Because Norwich is a UNESCO City of Literature, our own choreography sometimes borrows the idea: a 'City of Stories' barre-to-centre sequence built like short chapters — purely our own routine rather than any local tradition. Reaching class is simple in so compact a centre, a short walk from the station or a quick Park & Ride hop from the villages.

Ballet in Norwich FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Am I too old to start ballet as an adult? +

No — there is no upper age for recreational ballet, and adult beginners are exactly who this class is for. You build up gradually, and nobody expects you to have danced as a child.

Is this really a class for adult beginners, not children? +

Completely. It is a grown-up beginners' strand taught at an adult pace, with the barre treated as brand new. Guildhall School of Dancing runs adult ballet locally too, so the city has a real adult habit for it.

Where in Norwich do the ballet classes take place? +

In the city centre near the Norwich Lanes, with a second option towards Riverside. The precise studio is confirmed when you book. Both sit inside the compact centre, a short walk from the station.

What do I wear, and do I need ballet shoes? +

Fitted, comfortable clothes you can move in and socks or soft ballet shoes. Don't buy anything before your first class — thick socks are fine to start, and we'll advise on shoes once you decide to continue.

How much does an adult ballet class in Norwich cost? +

A flat £8 per drop-in, with no membership and no term you're tied into. It is the same price whether it is your first class or your fiftieth.

I'm not flexible or sporty — is that a problem? +

Not in the slightest. Ballet builds flexibility and strength over time; it doesn't ask you to arrive with either. The early weeks are about posture and control, both of which anyone can develop.

Will ballet actually improve my posture? +

Genuinely, yes. The alignment and core work are the whole point, and most people notice they stand taller and move more easily within a few weeks — it carries straight into everyday life.

Is there ballet to watch in Norwich? +

Norwich Theatre Royal brings touring companies and productions through the year, a short walk from the centre — a good way to see up close what you are working towards in class.

Can I keep going after the beginners' stage? +

Absolutely. Once the fundamentals are solid we move you into improver work — longer sequences, cleaner turns, more strength — and there is plenty of graded ballet in the city if you catch the bug.
