Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm-up, filmi style
Shoulder bounces, grapevines and travelling steps to a big soundtrack number — the energy is set before the teaching starts.
The vocabulary
Classic filmi moves broken down one by one: wrist rolls, shoulder shrugs, the light bounce that sits under everything, and the expressions that sell it.
The hook step
Every Bollywood hit has its signature step. We learn the week's hook slowly, then bring it up to film tempo.
Building the routine
The hook joins verses and formations into a proper chunk of choreography, rehearsed in small groups so everyone gets front-row time.
Full performance run
The whole routine danced flat out to the full track — finishing, as tradition demands, in a freeze-frame pose worthy of a movie poster.
About Bollywood Classes in Exeter
We will be honest about the local landscape: Exeter has no long-established Bollywood scene of its own — no dedicated academy, no annual mela to anchor a year around. What it has is our instructor-led weekly hour, taught by choreographers who know the filmi vocabulary properly, and a city compact enough that the class draws students, families and complete newcomers from every side of it.
Bollywood is film choreography, and that is what makes it such a joyful class. The style borrows from Indian classical shapes, folk steps and modern street styles all at once, stitched together with the thing no other genre insists on: expression. Eyes, eyebrows and full-beam smiles are part of the technique, and by minute twenty nobody remembers to be self-conscious.
Classes run centrally near Queen Street and Gandy Street, a short walk from Exeter Central and the High Street. During university term the city's student dance societies swell the general dance population, and our room happily mixes students, professionals and retirees in the same routine.

Why Choose Bollywood in Exeter?
Joy is the technique
Expression is taught, not hoped for — which is why Bollywood classes are reliably the happiest hour on any timetable.
A serious cardio hour
Big travelling steps, jumps and repeats add up to a genuine workout that never once feels like exercise.
Four styles in one
Classical lines, folk footwork, street attitude and jazz staging all live inside filmi choreography — you sample everything.
£8, come when you can
Flat drop-in price with no course commitment. Routines run in short blocks, so joining mid-stream is easy.
Your Bollywood Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
First routines
The bounce settles in
That light, constant lift under the feet — the engine of the style — stops needing your attention.
Hands catch up
Wrist rolls and hand shapes start landing with the feet instead of trailing a beat behind them.
Expression unlocks
Dancing with your face
The eyebrows, eyes and grin come off the bench — the part everyone dreads and then refuses to give up.
Telling the story
Filmi choreography narrates its songs, and you learn to play the scene, not just execute the steps.
Speed and stamina
Film tempo
Routines come up to the speed of the actual track — a fitness milestone as much as a dancing one.
Formations
Lines, windows and canons make the group look like a production number rather than a row of soloists.
The full production
Whole songs, owned
You hold choreography across a complete track, transitions included, and the freeze-frame ending feels earned.
Every occasion covered
Weddings, sangeets and parties — you become the person who can lead the floor when the big number drops.
Bollywood in Exeter FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need to know Bollywood films to enjoy the class? +
Not remotely. The choreography is taught from scratch and the joy is universal — though be warned, most regulars end up with a favourite soundtrack playlist within a month.
Is this Bollywood or bhangra? +
Bollywood — filmi choreography from Hindi cinema, which borrows from classical, folk and street styles. Bhangra is a distinct Punjabi folk dance with its own tradition; we stick to what we teach well.
How much does a class in Exeter cost? +
£8 flat on the night, no block booking required. Routines run in short blocks but are taught so a newcomer can join at any week.
What should I wear? +
Loose, breathable clothes and clean trainers — this is one of our sweatier hours. Bring water; bangles and flourishes are welcome but entirely optional.
Where in Exeter is the class? +
Centrally, around the Queen Street and Gandy Street quarter near Exeter Central, with the exact venue confirmed on booking. Private group sessions travel across Devon.
I have two left feet — will I cope? +
Yes. Hook steps are designed to be catchy — they were written so whole cinemas could copy them — and we build every routine slowly before adding speed.
Is the class suitable for children? +
The weekly session is adult-focused (roughly 16 up), but we run private family and party bookings across Exeter and Devon where all ages dance together.
Can you do a Bollywood session for a hen party or celebration? +
Gladly — filmi routines are made for celebrations. We run private Bollywood hen party classes across Exeter, at your venue or a hired studio, with a flat group price.
How do I book a first class? +
Send the form on this page with your name and contact. You will hear back within a working day with the next session's details and directions.
