Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 min

Unlocking the spine

Slow circles through the hips, ribs and shoulders to a warm-up track — finding the joints that are about to do all the talking.

10–25 min

One isolation at a time

A single clean hip drop, then a lift, then a rib slide — each drilled alone with everything else deliberately still, because stillness is half the skill.

25–40 min

The shimmy, relaxed

The classic knee-driven shimmy, built soft — tension kills it, so we practise letting go rather than trying harder.

40–50 min

Arms join the story

Snake arms and simple hand paths float over the hip work, and suddenly two parts of you are dancing different lines at once.

50–60 min

A phrase to take home

The night's moves join into a short combination set to a Middle Eastern rhythm — danced through twice, so it leaves with you.

About Belly Dance Classes in Exeter

Belly dance runs on a different engine from every other class we teach in Exeter. There is no partner, no travelling patterns to memorise, no leaping — the whole craft is isolation, teaching the hips, ribs and shoulders to move independently while everything else stays quiet. That makes it one of the most level starting lines in dance: prior experience counts for almost nothing, and patience counts for almost everything.

It is also, we should say plainly, a class that welcomes every body — every age, size and level of fitness. The movements scale to whatever your joints offer on the night, the styling is yours to dial up or down, and the room we keep is supportive, unglamorous and quietly focused on craft rather than costume.

You will find us in the centre of Exeter, around the Queen Street and Gandy Street quarter near Exeter Central — an easy hour to fold into an evening, with the High Street and the cathedral quarter's cafés a few minutes' walk for afterwards. Private group sessions travel anywhere in Devon.

Why Choose Belly Dance in Exeter?

Every body, meant literally

The technique scales to any age, size and fitness level — isolation work asks for patience, not a particular body.

Coordination like nothing else

Moving one part while stilling the rest rewires how you inhabit your body — the learning itself is the pleasure.

Core work in disguise

Hip drops, lifts and shimmies quietly work the deep core and posture muscles for the whole hour.

£8 on the night

Flat price, no course fee, no costume required — a hip scarf is a lovely extra, never an entry requirement.

Your Belly Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

Learning to be still

Clean single isolations

A hip drop that moves only the hip — harder than it sounds, and the foundation of everything that follows.

Posture that supports it

Soft knees, long spine, settled shoulders: the neutral stance that lets each isolation read clearly.

02

Movements start layering

Shimmy over steps

The relaxed shimmy keeps running while your feet begin to travel — the first genuine layering milestone.

Circles and eights

Hip circles and figure-eights join the drops and lifts, and your vocabulary roughly doubles in a fortnight.

03

The upper body wakes

Snake arms with patience

Fluid arm paths that move from the shoulder blade outward, floating independently above the hip work.

Rib and chest work

Slides and lifts through the ribcage open up the slow, expressive side of the dance.

04

Dancing whole phrases

Combinations with feeling

Isolations chain into phrases that follow the music's shape — drum for the hips, strings for the arms.

Your own styling

You start making choices — sharper here, softer there — which is the point where technique becomes your dance.

Belly Dance in Exeter FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need to be a particular shape or fitness level for belly dance? +

No — and we mean that without an asterisk. Isolation work scales to every body and every level of fitness; you work within your own range and progress at your own pace.

What do people wear to the Exeter class? +

Leggings or comfortable trousers and a top you can see your waist move in. Bare feet or thin socks work best. A jingly hip scarf is a fun addition once you are a regular — never a requirement.

Is the class women-only? +

Everyone is welcome. Belly dance has a long history of dancers of all genders, and our Exeter room reflects that — come as you are.

How much is it? +

£8 a class, flat, paid when you arrive. No block bookings, no term fees, no costume costs hiding behind the price.

Where do you teach in Exeter? +

In the city centre around the Queen Street and Gandy Street quarter, a few minutes from Exeter Central — the exact studio is confirmed when you book.

I have no rhythm at all — will I struggle? +

Less than you would in almost any other style. Belly dance is learned movement by movement at your own speed, with no partner depending on you and no choreography sprung on week one.

Which style of belly dance do you teach? +

The foundation is Egyptian raqs sharqi technique — the classic isolations, shimmies and undulations — with folkloric and modern fusion flavours borrowed once the basics are secure.

Is it a good workout? +

A sneaky one. The hour keeps the deep core, hips and back working continuously at low impact, and regulars notice posture and waist strength changes within a couple of months.

How do I start? +

Pop your details into the form on this page. We will reply within a working day with the next beginner-friendly session, where it is and what to bring — which is not much.
