Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 min

Walking, but on purpose

Slow, weighted walks and struts to set the tone. It feels silly for about four minutes, and then it feels tremendous.

10–25 min

The cabaret toolkit

Shimmies, bumps, sways and the classic poses, broken down without hurry — the vocabulary every routine is assembled from.

25–40 min

Props behave for you

A boa draped, a fan snapped, a chair leaned on — handled so each looks intended rather than improvised.

40–50 min

A number takes shape

The moves join into a short routine with an entrance, a tease of a build and a proper ending — performed as a character, not as yourself.

50–60 min

The private premiere

One full group run-through for an audience of nobody but each other. The applause is real anyway.

About Burlesque Classes in Exeter

Burlesque, taught properly, is a theatre craft: character, comic timing, and the art of holding a room with a raised eyebrow and a slow turn. Clothes stay on — that is not a footnote, it is the format. What comes off is the self-consciousness, usually somewhere around the second shimmy, when the room collectively realises nobody is watching anybody because everybody is busy.

Exeter suits this class better than its cathedral-city manners suggest. There is no resident cabaret circuit here to audition for, and that is rather the point: the hour is complete in itself, a private stage for people who want the swagger without a spotlight. Every age, shape and level of daring is welcome, and the persona you build is entirely your own business.

We teach in the city centre near Queen Street and Gandy Street, a few minutes from Exeter Central. The studio is private for the hour — no walk-through traffic, no windows onto the street — and groups from Topsham, Exmouth or anywhere in Devon can book the whole experience privately at their own venue.

Why Choose Burlesque in Exeter?

A persona to borrow

You perform as a character you invent — which, it turns out, is the fastest way past every ounce of stage fright.

Every body applauded

Burlesque has celebrated every age, shape and size for a century. Confidence is the aesthetic; there is no other requirement.

Timing you can use anywhere

The craft is pauses, eyelines and landing a beat — skills that follow you into presentations, parties and life generally.

£8, props provided

Flat price on the night, boas and fans supplied for class use, nothing to buy and nothing to sign.

Your Burlesque Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

Finding the walk

Weight and slowness

The deliberate, unhurried quality that reads as confidence — learned first, because everything hangs off it.

Permission granted

The room's first collective laugh dissolves the embarrassment, generally inside week one.

02

Vocabulary and wit

Bumps, sways, shimmies

The classic moves get clean, then get funny — burlesque is comedy as much as choreography.

The eyeline

You learn where to look and when to look away, which does more work than any step in the routine.

03

Character work

Building your persona

A name, a walk, an attitude — the invented self who performs so that you do not have to.

Props as punctuation

Fan, boa and chair stop being hazards and start being the commas and exclamation marks of your number.

04

The full number

An act with an arc

Entrance, build, wink, finale — a complete routine you could perform, whether or not you ever choose to.

Confidence, exported

The self-possession stops being a costume and starts turning up in ordinary rooms, unannounced.

Burlesque in Exeter FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do clothes come off in a burlesque class? +

No. Everyone stays fully dressed for the whole hour — the class teaches the theatre of burlesque: character, timing, poses and prop work. What you do with the skills on your own time is your business.

Is the Exeter class private? +

Yes — the studio is ours alone for the hour, with no through-traffic and no audience. The only people who ever see the routine are the people learning it.

I am nothing like a performer — is this wasted on me? +

The opposite. Burlesque is built for people who think they could never do it; the character does the performing, and the craft is taught step by tiny step.

What does it cost? +

£8 a session, flat, paid on the night. Class-use props are provided, so there is nothing to buy.

What should I wear? +

Clothes you can move and feel good in, plus shoes you can pivot on — a low heel if you like, trainers if you prefer. Fishnets optional, forever.

Where in Exeter do you run it? +

Centrally, in the Queen Street and Gandy Street quarter near Exeter Central, exact venue confirmed on booking. Private group bookings travel anywhere in Devon.

Is there an age limit? +

Adults only — 18 up, no ceiling. Our rooms regularly span thirty-year age ranges, and the craft only improves with lived-in confidence.

Can we book burlesque for a hen party in Exeter? +

Absolutely — it is one of our most-requested hen themes. We bring the class to your venue or hire a studio, one flat price for the whole group; see our Exeter burlesque hen party page.

How do I book a first class? +

The form on this page reaches us directly — name and contact is plenty. We reply within a working day with the next session and the address.
