Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 min

Posture before steps

The whole form balances on a still, lifted upper body — so the first minutes go entirely on stance, turnout and quiet arms.

10–25 min

The two signatures

The pointed toe and the sprung knee, drilled separately before any sequence asks for both at once.

25–40 min

Soft shoe first

A light jig over a reel's even pulse — points, hops and skips linked into your first eight bars of actual Irish dance.

40–50 min

The percussive half

Basic heel-and-toe figures bring up the volume — your own feet become the instrument, which never stops being satisfying.

50–60 min

To the music

Steps meet a traditional recording at a friendly tempo, run as a group, followed by the calf stretch you will be glad of.

About Irish Dancing Classes in Exeter

Here is the truthful picture: Exeter does not currently have a long-running weekly Irish dance school for adults that we could simply point you to. So instead of pretending, we run Irish dance the way we run several specialist styles in Devon — as arranged sessions and private group bookings, taught by choreographers trained in the form, at a central Exeter studio or a venue of yours.

The style itself splits beautifully in two. Soft shoe is the airborne half: light jigs and reels danced tall and springy, arms quiet, feet pointed. Hard shoe is the percussion half: heel-and-toe rhythms you can hear rising off the floor. A good beginners' session gives you a genuine taste of both, and no Irish heritage, partner or prior lesson is needed for either.

Group bookings are where this style shines brightest — birthday sessions, team socials and hen parties take to Irish dance wonderfully, because a room full of people discovering the hard-shoe beat together is a room already celebrating. We travel across Exeter, Topsham, Exmouth and the rest of Devon.

Why Choose Irish Dancing in Exeter?

Footwork like a metronome

Fast, precise, well-timed feet are the whole discipline — and that timing quietly upgrades every other dancing you do.

A leg day in disguise

The springs, hops and drives are honest cardio and lower-leg strength work, delivered by a fiddle instead of a fitness app.

It comes to you

No standing venue to trek to — we arrange a central studio or bring the whole session to your hall, hotel or party venue in Devon.

Built for groups

From £8 a head for arranged classes, with private bookings priced flat — Irish dance is at its best learned in a crowd.

Your Irish Dancing Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

Standing tall

The carriage

Still torso, dropped shoulders, lifted chin — the frame that makes the footwork underneath look effortless.

Point and spring

The two building blocks arrive early and get drilled until they stop needing thought.

02

Soft-shoe flight

Light jig, learned

Your first full figure — points, hops and travel strung over the reel's even pulse.

Spring stamina

Calves and ankles adapt to the bounce, and eight bars stops feeling like a sprint.

03

Hard-shoe voice

Heel and toe speak

Basic treble rhythms turn your feet audible — the addictive half of the form, by common consent.

Clean sound

You learn that a crisp single beat outranks a blurry fast one, and chase clarity over speed.

04

Dancing the tradition

Figures to music

Steps assemble into recognisable traditional figures danced to real recordings at real tempo.

Party-proof skills

A céilí-style group figure in your pocket makes you dangerous at every wedding from here on.

Irish Dancing in Exeter FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Is there a weekly Irish dance class in Exeter? +

Not an established adult one at present, and we would rather say so than invent one. We teach Irish dance through arranged sessions and private group bookings across Exeter and Devon — the form travels well.

Do I need to be Irish, or have danced before? +

Neither. The technique is taught from a standing start, and enthusiasm for the music covers everything ancestry does not.

What does it cost? +

Arranged open sessions run at our flat £8 a class; private group bookings are quoted flat for the whole group. Either way there is no membership or term fee.

What shoes should I bring? +

Clean trainers or soft flexible shoes for the light-shoe work. For the percussive half, a firm-soled shoe with a small heel does the job at beginner level — proper hard shoes come much later.

Where do sessions happen? +

Either a central Exeter studio around the Queen Street quarter, or your own venue — halls, hotels and party houses across Exeter, Topsham, Exmouth and wider Devon.

Can we book Irish dancing for a hen party or celebration? +

Yes — it is a brilliant group booking, all shared rhythm and laughing at your own feet. One flat price covers the whole party; see our Irish dancing hen page for Exeter.

Is Irish dance very hard on the knees? +

Taught properly, no — spring is absorbed through the foot and calf, and beginner tempos are kind. We build the bounce gradually and stretch properly at the close.

Soft shoe or hard shoe — which will I learn? +

Both, in taster form: the airborne light-jig half and the percussive heel-and-toe half. Most people leave with a firm favourite and we happily lean future sessions toward it.

How do I arrange a class? +

The form on this page is the quickest route — tell us roughly who and where, and we will come back within a working day with dates and a price.
