Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Reading the room
We set posture and a comfortable closed hold, and explain the line of dance — the anticlockwise current every ballroom floor in the world flows along.
The waltz box, solo
The six-step box walked through alone with its slow rise and fall, so the pattern lives in your feet before a partner relies on it.
Frames meet
Couples form and rotate every few minutes. Leads practise offering clear, early signals; follows practise trusting the frame instead of predicting it.
The box starts travelling
Quarter turns open the pattern out and the waltz begins to move around the room, corners and all.
Music takes over
A full waltz danced end to end in line of dance — plus, some weeks, a first taste of quickstep to show you where this goes next.
About Ballroom Classes in Exeter
Most people who walk into our Exeter ballroom hour have a reason waiting in the calendar: a wedding at one of Devon's country houses, a milestone anniversary, a cruise with a dance floor they intend to actually use. Ballroom is the rare dance style that is also a life skill — and it is far more learnable than its reputation suggests, provided someone starts you from the very beginning.
So that is where we start. Posture before steps, the hold before the figures, and the waltz before anything else, because its slow rise and fall teaches the fundamentals more kindly than any other dance. Partners rotate through the hour, so couples and solo dancers mix easily and everybody learns to dance with more than one person.
Sessions run in central Exeter around the Queen Street and Gandy Street quarter, an easy reach from Exeter Central and the High Street. For wedding parties and groups further out — Topsham, Exmouth, the country-house belt east of the city — we bring the class to your venue instead.

Why Choose Ballroom in Exeter?
The occasions skill
Weddings, anniversaries, black-tie dinners, cruises — ballroom is the dancing that adult life keeps quietly demanding.
Couples and singles both fit
Rotation is standard, so you can come as a pair and still benefit, or come alone and never be short of a frame.
Navigate any floor
Line of dance, floorcraft and a repertoire that works at any tempo — you learn to share a real floor, not just a studio.
£8 and no syllabus pressure
Flat price on the night, no medals, no exams, no term commitment. Social ballroom for its own sake.
Your Ballroom Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The frame holds
Posture under movement
Standing tall stops collapsing the moment your feet get involved — the foundation every figure sits on.
Committed steps
You learn to place full weight into each step so a partner can feel exactly where the couple is heading.
Waltz, then friends
Rise and fall for free
The waltz's lift stops being counted and starts being breathed — it appears in the knees without being asked.
A second tempo
Quickstep's brightness or a social foxtrot's glide joins the waltz, and you feel how one frame serves every dance.
The floor gets easier
Corners and traffic
Natural turns steer you around the room's geometry, and busy floors turn from hazard into habitat.
Leading and following mature
Signals shrink until they are nearly invisible — which is precisely when ballroom starts to look effortless.
Dancing in the wild
Function-floor confidence
A wedding band strikes up and you stand up with genuine pleasure instead of strategic reluctance.
Further, if you fancy
If the bug bites, we will point you toward Devon's established syllabus teaching for medals and competitive work.
Ballroom in Exeter FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Can you get us ready for a wedding first dance? +
Yes — the weekly class builds general skill, and for a choreographed first dance we run dedicated wedding lessons across Exeter and Devon, including at your venue. See our Exeter wedding dance page for packages.
Do I need to arrive with a partner? +
No. Partners rotate through the hour as standard, so solo dancers are never spare and couples still get plenty of time in each other's frame.
Which dances will I learn first? +
The waltz opens the account because its slow rise and fall teaches posture, weight and timing most kindly. Quickstep and a social foxtrot follow once the waltz is comfortable.
What footwear works for ballroom? +
Smooth-soled shoes you can pivot in — leather soles or flat, low-tread trainers. A small heel is fine if you are used to one. Save the proper dance shoes until you are hooked.
How much is a session? +
£8 flat, paid on the night, with no membership or block booking. If you later want exams and medals, Devon has established syllabus schools we are happy to recommend.
Where in Exeter are classes held? +
Centrally, in the Queen Street and Gandy Street quarter — a short level walk from Exeter Central, uphill from St Davids. The exact venue is confirmed when you book.
Is parking manageable for an evening class? +
Yes, with a little planning — central car parks sit within a few minutes of the studio quarter, and evening rates are kinder than daytime ones. Arriving by train, Exeter Central is the stop you want.
I am famously clumsy — honestly, can I do this? +
Honestly, yes. Ballroom is walked, counted and repeated slowly; nothing is sprung on you. Clumsiness is nearly always just unfamiliarity, and the box step wears it down within a couple of weeks.
How do we book a first class? +
Fill in the enquiry form with your name and contact and we will reply inside a working day with the next beginner session and the studio address.
