Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Joints before tricks
Shoulders opened, wrists woken, core switched on — pole loads the joints it uses, so the warm-up is genuinely non-negotiable.
Meet the apparatus
The grips that actually hold, a controlled walk around the pole, and how to come off it safely — unglamorous and essential.
Your first spin
One controlled spin, entered slowly and landed softly onto matting. Clean beats fast, today and always.
Strength, quietly
Supported holds and braced positions that grow the pulling power later tricks will draw on — loaded only as far as your body agrees.
Make it dance
Spins, steps and holds threaded into a short sequence, then a thorough stretch through hands, back and shoulders.
About Pole Dance Classes in Exeter
First, the fact that reassures every beginner: nobody walks into a first pole class with the strength the sport ends up giving them. Grip, core and upper-body power are outputs of the training, not entry requirements. Session one assumes you can hold the pole and walk around it, and builds every single thing from there.
Second, how we run it in Exeter — through established local partner studios rather than our own rented rooms, and we are upfront about why. Pole needs poles rigged properly into floor and ceiling, crash matting and instructors certified on apparatus. Exeter has studios equipped for exactly that, so our beginner sessions run on their rigs, with venue details confirmed when you book.
One honest limitation follows: pole is the single style we never bring to your venue — no pop-up rig at a party house passes our safety bar. Everything else about the class is flexible: every body, every age from 18, every level of current fitness, £8 a session.

Your Pole Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Ground floor
Grip and trust
Hands learn the holds, and the pole stops being intimidating equipment and becomes a training partner.
Spins that land
Two or three basic spins entered and exited with control — the foundation everything rotates around.
Strength arrives
Holds lengthen
Seconds get added to supported holds as grip and core quietly compound week on week.
Body awareness
You learn where your weight is at all times — the skill that makes advanced pole possible and safe.
The vocabulary opens
Transitions smooth out
Spins, sits and steps start linking without pauses to regroup — it begins reading as dance.
First inversions, maybe
When — and only when — the strength is banked, going upside down enters the conversation on your terms.
Your pole practice
Sequences with style
Routines gain flow, musicality and your own flavour — athletic, lyrical or theatrical as suits you.
A community, included
Pole rooms are famously supportive — expect your progress to be cheered by name within a month.
Pole Dance in Exeter FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need to be strong or flexible before starting pole? +
No — this is the most persistent myth in the sport. Beginners arrive with ordinary bodies; the strength and flexibility are built by the classes themselves, gradually and safely.
Why do you use partner studios in Exeter? +
Because pole done properly needs poles rigged into floor and ceiling, matting and specialist instructors — and Exeter has studios equipped for exactly that. We would rather run on professional rigs than improvise our own.
Can you bring pole to our party venue? +
No — pole is the one style we never deliver mobile, because a free-standing pole at a party house cannot meet our safety standard. For hen groups we arrange studio sessions instead, which honestly work better anyway.
What should I wear? +
Shorts and a fitted top — skin grip on the pole is a technical requirement, not a style choice. Skip moisturiser on the day; slippery skin and spins are a poor combination. Bare feet are standard.
How much is a session? +
Beginner sessions from £8 at our partner studios, paid per class. If you fall for the sport, the studios offer their own progression routes — we will point you honestly.
Where in Exeter are the classes? +
At properly equipped partner studios in and around the city — exact venue confirmed with your booking. All are reachable from the centre; a couple sit a short drive out, which we flag when you book.
Is pole dancing actually dancing, or is it gymnastics? +
Both live inside it. Beginner classes lean toward controlled movement and strength; as you progress you choose your flavour — athletic tricks, flowing dance or theatrical performance.
I am worried I am too heavy for the pole. +
Properly rigged poles hold far more than any student who has ever walked in, and moves are scaled to each body from day one. Every size starts pole, and every size progresses.
How do I book a first session? +
The form on this page — we reply within a working day with the next beginner date, the studio location and the shorts-and-no-moisturiser briefing in full.
