Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm Up, Walk Through
A gentle warm-up, then a slow walk through the night's first dance with no music, so the shape of it is clear before the tempo arrives.
Name the Steps
Grapevines, kick-ball-changes, coaster steps and turns, each one called by name as it comes round so you always know what's next.
Make It a Dance
Those steps get stacked into a full sequence, with the wall changes that keep the whole line rotating around the room.
Drop the Track On
Running the finished dance to music — country, yes, but just as likely soul, Motown or chart-pop depending on the night.
A Second Dance
A contrasting routine to widen the repertoire, then an easy stretch to send everyone off.
About Line Dancing Classes in Derby
Few dances let you walk in this cold. There is no partner to bring, nothing to revise beforehand, and a caller announcing each move the moment it lands — you follow the line in front and pick it up as you go. Our line dancing classes in Derby range well past country into soul, Motown, chart-pop and a fair bit of rock-and-roll.
What sets Derby apart is how far we will travel. Plenty are happy to come to a central studio, but we are just as glad to load up and run the class in your own hall — north to Belper and Duffield, out to Ashbourne and Quarndon, or right up to the edge of the Peak District. In town, our rooms sit around the city centre, confirmed on booking.
Derby has folk dance deep in its history, too — the long-running Dancing England gatherings once held at the old Assembly Rooms lent their name to today's rapper-sword tournament, a reminder that dancing in lines and sets is an old local habit. You need none of that to join. At £8 a night with no membership, flat shoes that pivot cleanly and a willingness to laugh off a wrong turn, you are set.

Why Choose Line Dancing in Derby?
No Partner, No Pressure
Turn up on your own and follow the caller — every step is named as it arrives, so there's nothing to prepare and nobody to keep in step with.
We'll Come to You
Beyond the city studios we will run the whole class in a hall near you — Belper, Duffield, Ashbourne, Quarndon and out toward the Peak.
Far More Than Country
Routines land on soul, Motown, chart-pop and rock-and-roll as often as country — the playlist is broader than the boots suggest.
Every Age on One Floor
With no pairing off, line dancing draws the widest age range we teach — teenagers through to grandparents, all in the same line.
Your Line Dancing Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Joining the Line
First Night In
Grapevines, walks and turns learned purely by following along — there is genuinely nothing to prepare in advance.
Footwear
Comfortable clothes and smooth-soled flat shoes that let you pivot. Cowboy boots remain entirely optional.
Whole Dances
Complete Routines
Steps threaded into full dances, including the wall turns that keep the line moving around the floor.
A Broader Playlist
Country for sure, but soul, Motown and chart-pop routines turning up just as regularly.
Dancing Without the Call
Off the Prompts
Holding the dances in your own memory, needing the caller less and less as the patterns settle in.
Quick to Learn
Picking up a brand-new routine inside a single evening as the common building blocks start to click.
A Fixture on the Floor
A Deep Repertoire
Dozens of dances you can drop into the instant the music starts, whatever the tempo.
Host Your Own
Bringing a come-to-you class to your own group somewhere across Derbyshire or the Peak.
Line Dancing in Derby FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Is line dancing really all country music? +
Not by a long way. Country turns up, but so do soul, Motown, chart-pop and rock-and-roll — line dancing left the saloon-and-Stetson image behind decades ago.
Do I need to bring a partner? +
Never, and that's the whole charm. Everyone faces the same way in lines, so you can arrive solo every week and slot straight in without ever pairing off.
Can a complete beginner keep up on the first night? +
Easily. Each dance is walked through slowly and called out as you go, so there is nothing to memorise beforehand — most people dance a full routine on their very first evening.
Will you travel out to towns and villages near Derby? +
Yes — the come-to-you class is a big part of what we do. Give us a group and a hall and we will run a session in Belper, Duffield, Ashbourne, Quarndon or out toward the Peak District.
Where in Derby do the studio classes run? +
From rooms around the city centre, confirmed when you book. The Morledge bus station is the more central arrival point, with car parks nearby for anyone driving in from the suburbs.
What should I wear on my feet? +
Flat shoes with a smooth sole that lets you pivot and turn cleanly — grippy trainers can catch on a spin. Leave the cowboy boots at home unless you genuinely fancy them.
How much is a line dancing class in Derby? +
£8 a session, no membership and no contract. Come along when it suits; discounted blocks arrive once a regular local class has settled into its slot.
Is there an upper age limit? +
None at all — line dancing pulls the broadest age mix on our books, from teenagers to dancers in their eighties. Under-18s have their own sessions with vetted staff.
Can you run a class for a party or community group? +
We can — a come-to-you line dancing session suits clubs, birthdays and community groups right across Derbyshire. Pop your venue and rough numbers on the form and we'll take it from there.
