Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

On the Front Foot

We open with the body already moving to a track rather than standing still through a stretch — arms swinging loose, shoulders and hips rolling out, the pulse lifted until you feel warm and awake. Jazz asks for energy from the very first count, so the opening minutes go looking for exactly that.

10–25 mins

The Jazz Signature

Then we drill the things that make jazz read as jazz: long lines pulled out through the fingertips, snap isolations in the head and ribs, and the tall lift through the middle that keeps a turn upright. It is the craft block, taken slowly so the shapes land sharp instead of vague.

25–40 mins

Sending It Travelling

Now it moves down the room — high kicks, jazz leaps and turning steps carried along the diagonal in small groups, so you cover ground with real attack. Going in twos and threes is where the nerves fall away and the bold, space-eating side of jazz finally gets some air.

40–50 mins

Learning the Number

A short piece of choreography set to a stage or chart song grows a little longer each session, complete with the faces, level changes and dynamics that sell it. This is jazz doing its actual job — not steps in time, but a number you could put in front of a paying room.

50–60 mins

Clean It, Then Ease Off

The last stretch goes on tidying the routine until it properly holds together, then bringing the pace right down with a long stretch for the hip flexors, hamstrings and back that did the work. You head out loose rather than aching.

About Jazz Classes in Derby

Jazz is the bright, outward-facing style behind most of what you have watched on a stage or a screen — the West End number, the pop tour, the awards-show routine. It grew up in the theatre and the swing bands and never lost the instinct to project, to aim a shape at the back row and hold it there. Our Derby jazz classes teach it as a genuine technique with genuine performance sitting on top.

Derby is a fitting home for it. Derby Theatre on Theatre Walk is the city's main producing house, and a corner away on Chapel Street the arts centre lists jazz right beside commercial and musical-theatre work on its weekly timetable. We run from partner studios in the central theatre district, and your exact room is confirmed the moment a place is booked.

You do not need to touch your toes to walk in — that range is something the class grows into you slowly, so arrive as stiff as you please. Jazz shoes are a purchase for later; clean trainers are plenty while you are finding your feet. Adults of every age share the main floor, under-18s train in classes banded by age, and each session is £8.

Why Choose Jazz in Derby?

A Step From the Theatre

Our studios sit in Derby's theatre district, minutes from Derby Theatre and the Chapel Street arts centre where jazz and stage work actually go on. Learning a performance style within sight of a working stage gives the whole thing a point beyond the mirror.

Built to Be Performed

Jazz is not a quiet, inward style — it is made to be seen. From early on you work on projection, dynamics and finishing a move cleanly, so you come away able to actually sell a routine rather than only recall one.

No Splits Needed to Begin

You need neither jazz shoes nor a dancer's flexibility on night one. Trainers cope fine for the early weeks, and the open lines and high kicks arrive gradually as the class loosens you — first-timers are meant to turn up tight and unpolished.

Classes for Every Age

Under-18s train in classes banded by age under vetted, DBS-checked teachers, while the adult session stays open from teens well into retirement. Jazz genuinely rewards a late start, so nobody is too old to take it up here.

Your Jazz Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

Finding the Shapes

First Weeks

Early on it is alignment, the basic isolations and getting the body used to moving sharply and then softly on cue. It is unglamorous and it is the base the flashy material later stands on — expect to feel clumsy and to improve quickly.

What to Bring

Wear something you can both move in and see your shape in — close-fitting kit does it — with ordinary trainers on your feet. Buying jazz shoes is a decision for months ahead, not for your first evening.

Months 2–3

Turning and Travelling

Covering Ground

Now you take steps travelling — pirouette preparations, chaîné turns and jazz leaps sent along the diagonal so they eat up space. Spotting your turns and landing your jumps softly is the real work of these weeks.

Dancing It, Not Counting It

You begin phrasing steps against the music — catching an accent, holding a shape a beat longer — so a run of choreography starts to read as a performance rather than a checklist of moves ticked off.

Months 4–6

Whole Numbers

Longer Choreography

The routines stretch out and switch facing and height, testing your memory as hard as your legs. This is where the term's separate drills gather into something that genuinely looks like a stage piece.

Sharper Edges

Crisper kicks, cleaner stops, and the point where slipping into real jazz shoes finally feels worth doing. The gap between a beginner and a dancer here is mostly finish, and finish is what we go after.

Month 6 and On

Stage Standard

Full Technique

Double turns, controlled extensions and leaps with real height and a soft landing — the sort of vocabulary that would survive an actual audition or an actual stage.

Where It Takes You

Auditions, commercial and musical-theatre work, or the class next door with a jazz base solid enough to carry it. Plenty of people simply stay for the buzz of performing something well.

Jazz in Derby FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

I'm not remotely bendy — is jazz still for me? +

Completely. Flexibility is one of the things the class hands you over time, never something you must bring on day one. The warm-up lengthens you week by week, and beginners are expected to arrive tight — you loosen up as you go, not before you start.

What do I wear to a first jazz class, and do I need jazz shoes? +

Something close enough that the lines of your body show — leggings and a fitted top are ideal — plus clean trainers. Jazz shoes are worth buying later, once you know you are staying; for the early weeks trainers are all the footwear you need.

Where in Derby are the jazz classes held? +

At partner studios in the central theatre district, close to Derby Theatre on Theatre Walk and the arts centre on Chapel Street. Your precise room is named when your place is confirmed, and most sit within easy reach of the Morledge bus station and the city-centre car parks.

How much does a jazz class in Derby cost? +

Eight pounds to drop in, with no membership and nothing to sign. Once your studio's weekly timetable settles, cheaper block bookings open for regulars — but a single session is always yours for £8 whenever you fancy one.

Is jazz a good grounding if I want to do musical theatre? +

An excellent one. Musical theatre is essentially jazz with singing and acting laid over the top, so the turns, projection and clean lines you build here are the movement half of that world already in place. Many of our jazz dancers use it as exactly that stepping stone.

Will I have to perform in front of people? +

Only if you want to. We can point a routine toward a showcase for anyone keen, but you are just as welcome to take the class purely for the craft and the workout. Nobody is pushed onto a stage who would rather stay off one.

Can I take up jazz as an adult, or is it a children's thing? +

Adults are the majority of the main floor, running from late teens to well past seventy. Under-18s have their own age-banded groups. Jazz is kind to a later start because it leans on musicality and control as much as on youthful athleticism.

Does jazz connect to anything actually happening in Derby? +

It does — that is part of why we teach it here. Derby Theatre programmes touring musicals and home-grown shows built on exactly this movement language, and Chapel Street Arts Centre runs jazz and commercial sessions of its own. Learning it in the theatre district keeps the style close to the work it feeds.

How is jazz different from contemporary or commercial dance? +

Jazz is punchier and more presentational than contemporary, which pulls inward and toward the floor, and it is the technical parent of commercial, which borrows jazz's turns and attack for music videos and pop routines. Learn jazz and you have a foot in both of those neighbouring rooms.
