Dance Classes in Derby
Twenty Styles to Try in Derby
Beginners Are the Room, Not the Exception
In most of our Derby classes the total newcomers are the majority, not the odd one out, and every style opens on a level that assumes you know nothing at all. Anyone with training moves up to improver sessions run by choreographers who still take to the stage. Also sorting a hen do? One team covers both.
Built Around a Derby Week
Weeknight and weekend classes sit at studios around the Cathedral Quarter and out through Spondon, Littleover and Allestree, so getting to one after work is realistic wherever in Derby you start from. Turn up when it suits, or reserve a block and pay less. Wedding coming up? Our wedding dance lessons happen in these same studios.
Eight Pounds a Class
Every class is £8 flat, whether you drop in once or take a four-week block — the number never changes, there's no joining fee and no contract creeping in behind it. Have a go at one style now and a totally different one next week. Keen to begin? Get in touch.
Find Your Style
Twenty different styles running across the city — every one welcoming to complete beginners, every one led by a working, performing dancer.
Bachata
The Dominican partner dance of unhurried steps, a tap and a hip-led fourth beat — the gentlest way into the Cuban and Latin nights Havana Salsa and Dance Cubana keep going here.
Bachata Classes
Ballet
Barre, port de bras and centre work handed down over centuries — and the grown-up who has never plié'd before is exactly who these beginner classes exist for.
Ballet Classes
Ballroom
Waltz, quickstep and foxtrot with a frame that holds — Derby's own Gotta Dance has carried ISTD ballroom and Latin for years, and the skill earns its keep at every wedding after.
Ballroom Classes
Belly Dance
Slow shimmies, layered hip drops and the fine isolations at the heart of raqs sharqi — open to every age and body, and a sneaky-hard workout right through the core.
Belly Dance Classes
Bollywood
Big filmi hooks, rolling bhangra shoulders and expressive storytelling hands — beaming, high-energy cardio, with a real South Asian dance community behind it through Surtal Arts' workshops.
Bollywood Classes
Burlesque
Slow struts, a knowing tease and full showgirl swagger — and since everyone asks: nothing comes off, you simply walk out taller than you arrived.
Burlesque Classes
Commercial
Music-video and chart-floor choreography polished until it reads on camera — and since Core Design built Lara Croft right here in Derby, a shot of Tomb Raider attitude fits the room.
Commercial Classes
Contemporary
Release work, floor spirals and improvisation — the same physical, experimental dance Derby Festé pours through the city's streets each year, taught right from the ground up.
Contemporary Classes
Flamenco
Drumming heels, cracking palmas and a proud, straight spine — Andalusian fire that asks for your whole focus and gives a half-effort nothing back.
Flamenco Classes
Heels
Power, posture and edge in (optional) heels — and trainers work perfectly well early on, because for most people the confidence turns up well ahead of the actual footwear.
Heels Classes
Hip-Hop
The grooves, rocks and party dances at the root of the culture — musicality and feel before flashy tricks, and taught as its own craft rather than folded into street dance.
Hip-Hop Classes
Irish Dancing
Lightning reels and jigs danced entirely below the waist, arms locked to your sides — no Irish heritage required, just calves ready for a genuine shock.
Irish Dancing Classes
Jazz
Sharp kicks, clean pirouettes and long theatrical lines — the base most working dancers stand on, and the drive behind the touring shows that reach Derby Theatre.
Jazz Classes
K-Pop
The point choreography and razor-clean formation switches straight off the music videos — broken down step by step, then filmed the moment your group locks it in.
K-Pop Classes
Line Dancing
Grapevines, heel digs and not a single partner needed — country at the root, with a playlist as modern as you fancy.
Line Dancing Classes
Pole Dance
Climbs, spins and inverts, with the upper-body strength arriving through the classes rather than demanded up front — it runs at a specialist pole studio, so bring shorts you can grip in and go easy on the moisturiser beforehand.
Pole Dance Classes
Salsa
On-clave Cuban timing with partners rotating round the floor so nobody sits out — the friendliest way into the long-running weekly Latin nights Havana Salsa keeps busy in Derby.
Salsa Classes
Street Dance
House, breaking, popping and locking pulled under a single umbrella, taught by dancers who still gig for it — the all-styles session Chapel Street Arts Centre's timetable is known for.
Street Dance Classes
Tango
A close embrace, dramatic held pauses and a deliberate walk that carries real weight — Argentine tango smoulders slowly, and we ease beginners in gently on a first evening.
Tango Classes
Tap
Shuffles, flaps and pull-backs pile up until your feet turn into the rhythm section — and with shoe hire on the night, nothing's spent before you know you're hooked.

Dance Classes in Derby FAQ
The usual questions we field before someone's first Derby class.
How much are dance classes in Derby?
Every class is £8, and that one figure covers a single drop-in or a four-week block just the same. Nothing's signed and nothing renews behind your back — you only pay for the sessions you actually make it to.
Whereabouts in Derby do classes take place?
The style decides. Adult classes gather around the Cathedral Quarter and Chapel Street in the middle of Derby, while children's groups run out in Spondon, Chaddesden, Allestree and other suburbs. Check the individual style page for its venue — a short bus or drive usually connects them.
What should I wear to a first class?
Comfortable clothes you can move in and shoes that suit the style — trainers for most, bare feet or socks for others. Your style's page flags anything specific, like grip shorts for pole or borrowed shoes for tap. No dance kit needed to begin.
Do you teach children as well as adults?
We do — most styles run children's classes grouped by age and led by DBS-checked teachers, and street dance and ballet are the quickest to fill. Tell us your area when you get in touch and we'll match you with the closest group that still has space.
Do I need to bring a partner?
None of it needs a partner. The partnered styles — ballroom, tango, salsa and bachata — rotate everyone round the floor as a matter of course, so arriving solo is completely usual. Bring a plus-one and keep them if you like, or swap through and dance with everyone in turn.
