About Bollywood Classes in Canterbury
Bollywood dance is the exuberant style of Hindi cinema — classical Indian forms, folk traditions, hip-hop and Western pop all folded into choreography built to tell a story and light up a screen. Our Canterbury classes teach high-energy routines full of gesture, expression and bold group formations, set to unmistakable film music, so each session feels a little like landing in the middle of a musical number.
Canterbury's two universities and steady churn of students, staff and visitors give the city a genuinely international, curious community — and Bollywood is the sort of joyful, welcoming class that thrives on exactly that mix. You do not need any connection to Indian culture to fall for it. Ours runs weekly from a central studio just off the High Street and the lanes, an easy walk from Canterbury West or Canterbury East, and pulls dancers in from St Dunstan's, Wincheap, the University of Kent, Christ Church and the surrounding Kent villages.
No dance background, flexibility or fitness level is required to start — just a willingness to smile and go for it. Wear comfortable clothes and trainers, or dance barefoot, and bring as much or as little colour as you like.

Better Together
Formations, synchronised sections and shared energy make this a community from the first class — Bollywood is simply more fun as a crowd.
Your Bollywood Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Finding the Rhythm
In Your First Weeks
Basic steps — hip pops, head tilts, claps and arm lines — plus counting into film music and loosening up enough to actually use your face.
What to Bring
Comfortable clothes, trainers or bare feet, and no self-consciousness — Bollywood rewards commitment and energy far above tidy technique.
Building Expression
A Few Weeks In
Spins, mudra sequences, level changes and group formations, and connecting the moves to the feeling of the song — romance, celebration, defiance.
Where It Comes From
A little context on how songs carry the plot in Hindi cinema and where the gestures come from, so the dance means more than it mimics.
Performance Energy
Bigger Routines
Longer choreography with quick transitions, character switches and formation changes, set to a spread of golden-era and current Bollywood hits.
Moving as One
Synchronised group work starts to feel automatic, and you catch the collective lift that makes a Bollywood number land.
Stage-Ready
Going Further
Polished routines and the confidence to front a section — enough to lead a Bollywood moment at any party, wedding or cultural event.
Where Next
Dig into classical Indian roots, try contemporary for contrast, or book a Bollywood group session for a friends' celebration.
Bollywood in Canterbury FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
What is Bollywood dance? +
The lively, expressive dance of Indian cinema. It blends classical Indian movement, folk dance, hip-hop and contemporary influences into choreography made to tell a story and entertain, always set to Hindi film music. Think big gestures, bright energy and unmistakable drama.
Do I need any dance experience? +
None. The class is designed for beginners and builds from simple steps up to a full routine, with every combination broken down clearly. The sheer momentum of the music does a lot of the work of carrying you along.
Do I need a connection to Indian culture? +
Not in the least. We share some cultural context to make the dance richer, but the class is open to everyone, whatever your background — Bollywood has devoted fans and dancers all over the world.
What should I wear? +
Comfortable clothes you can move in — leggings, joggers, a t-shirt. Trainers or bare feet both work fine. Bright colours are welcome and entirely optional; enthusiasm is the only real dress code.
How much are classes in Canterbury? +
£8 a session, drop-in, paid on the door — no membership and no contract. Block discounts will be offered once the timetable is finalised, but a single class is always all you need to book.
Where in Canterbury do classes run? +
A central studio just off the High Street and the lanes, easy to reach on foot from Canterbury West or Canterbury East. We confirm the exact venue when you register your interest.
Is it a real workout? +
Very much so. Fast footwork, spins, jumps and constant arm extensions deliver a full cardio hit — most people are startled by how much they sweat while grinning their way through the hour.
What music will we dance to? +
A mix of classic and current Hindi film tracks, from golden-era favourites to recent chart numbers — the sort of songs that turn up in films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil Se and more recent blockbusters.
Do you offer private Bollywood sessions? +
Yes — private lessons for individuals, couples or small groups can be arranged, ideal for event prep, a cultural celebration or focused practice. Get in touch to fix a time and price.
