Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

First 10 min

Warm-Up & Swagger

Loose hip circles, slow shoulder shimmies and a little posture work to settle into the unhurried, self-assured pace burlesque runs on.

10–25 min

The Vocabulary

Struts, bumps, fan flourishes and the classic glove peel — every signature move pulled apart and rebuilt so a first-timer can land it.

25–40 min

Routine Building

We thread the moves into a short number set to swing, sultry jazz or a modern pop track, layering it one eight-count at a time.

40–52 min

Persona & The Reveal

Cheeky eye contact, comic timing and the slow art of the tease — plus a theatrical freeze on a musical cue, a nod to Canterbury's own playwright Marlowe.

Final 8 min

Full Run & Wind-Down

Perform the number in character, then ease out shoulders and calves while we talk over what landed and what to sharpen.

About Burlesque Classes in Canterbury

Burlesque is theatrical tease turned into choreography — glamour, comedy and control worn like a costume you never actually take off. Our Canterbury sessions build a classic-to-neo routine from nothing: glove work, fan play, chair basics and the walk that makes a room turn its head. The nerve you put on counts for far more than anything you might slip off.

Canterbury wakes up again once the day-trippers head home — the lanes and the little bars around St Dunstan's keep a proper evening buzz, yet a regular grown-up burlesque hour in the city has been oddly hard to pin down. We fill that gap a short stroll inside the medieval wall, near the Westgate Towers. There is no resident troupe and no audition here; just an instructor who breaks the craft right down and a room that whoops at every reveal.

Bring your nerves — most of our regulars swore blind they were shy on week one. Wear whatever lets you move boldly, and pack heels if you own a pair, though trainers are completely fine while you find your feet.

Why Choose Burlesque in Canterbury?

Confidence You Keep

Owning a strut in front of a friendly room quietly rewires how you carry yourself at work, at parties and long after the music cuts out.

A Stage Character

Invent a persona — a name, a walk, a wink — and borrow the theatrical timing that Canterbury's Christopher Marlowe made his living from.

Classic To Neo

Vintage showgirl polish at one end, modern neo-burlesque bite at the other — we teach both so you can chase whichever fits you.

Every Body Belongs

Burlesque settled the question long ago: every shape is a stage shape. Turn up exactly as you are and play.

Your Burlesque Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Finding Your Walk

Getting Going

Slow burlesque walks, hip sways, shoulder shimmies and hand flourishes, learning to move with deliberate, unhurried control.

What To Bring

Anything you feel bold in, plus heels if you have them — comfort and cheek are the whole kit list for now.

Month 2–3

Stacking The Toolkit

More Moves

Feather fans, bump-and-grind, the glove peel and simple chair basics, strung into short sequences with real attitude.

Your Persona

Sketching out your own character — the name, the vibe, the entrance — the point where a student quietly turns performer.

Month 4–6

Working The Room

Full Numbers

Complete routines with props — fans, gloves, a chair — and the knack of reading a crowd and steering its energy.

Show Craft

Comic pacing, a tease held a beat too long, music edits and a costume idea slowly taking shape.

Month 6+

Cabaret Ready

Stage Time

Optional spots at the city's cabaret and open-stage nights for anyone who fancies the lights.

Keep Going

Fresh numbers, new props and a standing invitation to keep polishing the act you have built.

Burlesque in Canterbury FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

I have never danced before — is that a problem? +

Not at all. Every term starts assuming zero experience, and the whole hour is pitched at first-timers. You learn the walks, the shimmies and one short routine at a beginner pace, with nobody watching but a room that is squarely on your side.

Do I need heels or a special outfit? +

No. Come in leggings and trainers for your first few weeks and add heels only once you fancy it. A block heel is kinder than a stiletto to begin with. There is no dress code — wear whatever makes you feel a bit daring.

How much does a class cost? +

It is £8 for a single drop-in session, paid as you go. No membership, no term-long commitment and no joining fee — turn up for the weeks that suit you and skip the ones that do not.

How do I get there and where do I park? +

We run inside the city wall, a short walk from the Westgate Towers. Canterbury West station brings the high-speed line in from London St Pancras and is minutes away on foot; the Whitefriars multi-storey is the easiest car park, so check its late-evening closing time before an evening class.

Is burlesque only for one type of body? +

The opposite. Burlesque grew up celebrating every size, shape and age on a stage, and our Canterbury room holds firmly to that. There is no fitness test and no flexibility required — only a willingness to have a laugh and give it a go.

What ages come along? +

Our adult classes run roughly 17 to 75. Most weeks bring a genuine spread — students from the University of Kent and Christ Church alongside people well into retirement — and everyone mixes happily.

Will I have to perform in front of people? +

Only if you want to. The weekly class is a private, supportive space with no audience. Later on there are optional slots at local cabaret nights, but plenty of dancers stay purely for the fun of the room and never step on a stage.

Can you do a burlesque hen party instead? +

Yes — a one-off group session is a favourite for hen dos and birthdays, taught to the same flat, no-surprises rate. Tell us your date and rough numbers and we will sort a booking.

How do I book my first class? +

Fill in the enquiry form on this page with the day that suits you and we will reply within one working day with the venue and start time. First-timers are always welcome to simply come and try it.
