Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm-Up & the Grid
A gentle mobiliser for hips, knees and ankles, then a quick tour of the floor language — walls, counts and the idea that the dance simply repeats, turned a quarter or half each time.
The Basic Steps
Grapevines, heel digs, struts and pivots named and drilled on their own, so the building blocks are familiar before they get strung into anything.
The Dance of the Day
One full line dance taught count by count, wall by wall, until the sequence loops without a caller. Everyone faces the same way and figures it out together.
Music & Turns
Setting the dance to the track and adding the quarter- and half-turns that send the whole line to a new wall — the moment it suddenly feels like proper dancing.
Dance It Through & Cool Down
Running the finished dance a few times for the sheer enjoyment, maybe stealing the start of a second, then an easy stretch.
About Line Dancing Classes in Canterbury
Line dancing is the most sociable way into dance because it asks the least of you up front: no partner, no lead-and-follow, just one choreographed sequence that everyone performs in unison, repeating as the group rotates to face each wall. It stretches well beyond country — pop, Motown, Latin and chart hits all get their own routines these days.
We do not run a standing weekly line-dance night in Canterbury and will not pretend to. What we do is bring the class to you — a caller, a speaker and a suitable floor set up in a hired hall or your own venue, right across Canterbury and East Kent. St Dunstan's and Wincheap are comfortably in range; Aylesham, the campuses and the Kent villages form the outer ring we reach with a little notice.
It suits every age and absolutely no experience. Wear something comfortable and shoes that pivot without gripping — a smooth sole beats a chunky trainer here. Bring a group or come alone; within one sequence you will be moving in time with total strangers and grinning about it.

Why Choose Line Dancing in Canterbury?
No Partner Required
Turn up solo, with a friend or as a whole group — everyone dances the same steps facing the same way, so nobody is left out and nobody has to lead.
We Bring the Floor
No weekly hall to find. We set the class up at your venue anywhere across Canterbury and East Kent, so it lands wherever your group actually is.
Good for the Head
Remembering sequences, counts and turns is proper gentle brain training. It sharpens memory and coordination while feeling like nothing but fun.
Instantly Sociable
Shared steps and a shared direction break the ice fast. Line-dance rooms are famously warm — you will know a few names before the first dance loops.
Your Line Dancing Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
First Steps
Getting Started
The core moves — grapevine, heel dig, kick-ball-change, pivot — learned by name at a friendly pace, with no turns to worry about yet.
What to Wear
Comfortable clothes and smooth-soled shoes or boots that let you pivot. Skip grippy trainers — they catch on the turns. Bring water.
Your First Dances
A Full Sequence
Stringing the basics into one complete line dance, count by count, until it repeats on its own without anyone calling it out.
Facing New Walls
Adding the quarter- and half-turns that rotate the whole line, so the same sequence keeps meeting a fresh direction.
Building a Repertoire
More Dances, More Styles
New routines set to country, pop, Motown and Latin tracks, each with its own flavour, steadily widening what you can drop into on any floor.
Smoothing the Style
Adding the easy roll and swagger that turns correct steps into confident ones — the polish that makes line dancing look effortless.
Confident on Any Floor
Dancing Socially
Comfortable joining a room mid-dance, picking sequences up quickly and enjoying the social side at events, weddings or a night out.
Where Next
Tackle higher-count and improver-level dances, or, if a regular crowd forms, help us turn the arranged sessions into a standing weekly Canterbury class.
Line Dancing in Canterbury FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
What is line dancing? +
A partner-free style where everyone dances the same choreographed sequence in unison, repeating it as the group turns to face each wall in turn. Once tied to country music, it now covers pop, Motown, Latin and chart tracks too.
Do I need a partner or any experience? +
Neither. That is the whole appeal — you dance solo within the group, and complete beginners start from the very first step. Come alone or bring people; over-17s of any age and ability are welcome.
Where in Canterbury do classes run? +
We do not keep a fixed weekly hall — we bring the class to a hired space or your own venue across Canterbury and East Kent, from the centre and St Dunstan's out toward Aylesham, the campuses and the villages. Tell us where works and we plan to it.
How much does it cost? +
A local drop-in is £8 on the day. Private groups and parties at your venue are quoted separately once we know numbers and a date — clear pricing, and we do not play competitor-matching games.
How do people get to a session? +
Canterbury West and Canterbury East are on separate train lines, both a short walk into the centre through the gates, with no tram or metro. For outer-ring venues we will flag the nearest stop or a car park with a closing time when we confirm.
What shoes should I wear? +
Smooth-soled shoes or boots that let you pivot cleanly. Chunky trainers grip the floor and can catch on turns, so a leather or suede sole is far kinder to your knees.
Is it a good workout? +
Gently, yes. A run of dances keeps you moving steadily for the best part of an hour — easy on the joints, good for balance and coordination, and it never feels like exercise while the music is on.
Can we book a private group or party? +
Definitely — it is a great fit for birthdays, hen groups, work socials and family get-togethers. We bring the caller and the music to your venue and teach dances the whole group can do together within the hour.
Could there be a regular weekly class? +
We would love one. Register your interest, and as soon as enough dancers in one part of Canterbury or East Kent want a standing night, we turn these arranged sessions into a fixed weekly class.
