Posture & Warm-Up

Chest lift, wrist circles and light heel strikes to set the tall, proud carriage and grounded stance flamenco is built on.

10–24 min

Footwork (Zapateado)

Golpes, plantas, tacones and escobillas, worked from single clean strikes up toward quick, driving rhythmic runs.

24–38 min

Arms & Hands (Braceo)

Long fluid arm lines, wrist rotations and floreos, with the slow torso movement that gives flamenco its charged intensity.

38–52 min

Choreography

Footwork, braceo and turns brought together over the compás of a palo such as soleá, tangos or bulerías.

Final 8 min

Practice & Release

One full-energy run of the phrase, then targeted stretches for calves, wrists and shoulders to protect the joints.

About Flamenco Classes in Canterbury

Flamenco is southern Spain's percussive, deeply expressive dance — proud posture, hammering feet, sculpted arms and raw emotional weight. Our Canterbury classes teach the real technique in order: footwork drills (zapateado), arm work (braceo), the flick and curl of the hands (floreos) and choreography set over the compás, the rhythmic cycle behind palos like soleá, tangos and bulerías.

We should be straight with you about the city. Canterbury has no resident tablao and no flamenco peña of its own — this is honest, instructor-led weekly tuition rather than a nightly stage scene. What the city does have is a genuine appetite for the form, fed by its festivals and lively arts calendar, and what has been missing is a proper regular class for adults who want to learn it well rather than just watch it. That is the hour we run, close to the centre and within the old walls.

No experience is needed — only a readiness to stamp, clap and lean into the music. Wear something that lets you move at the hips and shoulders, and bring shoes with a solid heel. Character shoes are ideal, but any firm, hard-soled shoe will get you stamping in week one.

Why Choose Flamenco in Canterbury?

Rhythm In Your Feet

Zapateado turns your feet into a percussion instrument, sharpening timing, coordination and musicality like little else can.

Emotional Release

Flamenco gives you licence to express real intensity — pride, sorrow, defiance, joy. It is dance as catharsis, not just choreography.

Poise & Presence

The upright carriage and sculpted arm lines carry straight off the floor into how you stand and hold a room.

Honest Tuition

No resident tablao to lean on, so every class is proper hands-on teaching — technique broken down and built patiently.

Your Flamenco Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Foundations

First Stamps

Posture, basic golpes and plantas, and clapping the compás — feeling the rhythmic cycle in the body before the feet get fast.

What To Wear

Clothing that frees the hips and shoulders, plus firm hard-soled or character shoes so your strikes actually sound.

Month 2–3

Feet & Arms Together

Faster Footwork

Building tacones and escobillas into longer runs, layering speed onto clean strikes without losing the timing.

Braceo Basics

Coordinating the fluid arms and floreos with the feet — the point where flamenco starts to feel whole rather than separate.

Month 4–6

Dancing A Palo

Full Choreography

A complete phrase set to soleá, tangos or bulerías, marrying footwork, braceo and turns over the compás.

Musical Feel

Learning to answer the accents and pauses of the rhythm rather than counting through them mechanically.

Month 6+

Real Duende

Expression

Bringing genuine intensity and personal voice to the steps, so the dance carries feeling and not only precision.

Deeper Palos

Exploring further rhythmic forms and more demanding footwork as your control and stamina build.

Flamenco in Canterbury FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Is Canterbury a good place to learn flamenco? +

Honestly, it has no resident tablao or peña, so this is a proper taught class rather than a live-stage scene. What it offers is patient, structured weekly tuition for adults who want to study the form properly — which for learning the technique is exactly what you need.

Do I need any experience to start? +

None at all. Beginners are welcome every week, and you build from posture and a single clean stamp upward. Rhythm and speed come with practice — all you bring on day one is a willingness to have a go.

What shoes and clothes should I bring? +

Shoes with a solid heel so your footwork actually sounds — character shoes are ideal, but any firm hard-soled shoe works to begin. Wear clothing that lets you move freely at the hips and shoulders.

How much is a class? +

Each drop-in is a flat £8, paid on the day. No membership and no block-booking, so you can attend the weeks that suit and skip any that clash.

Where is the class and how do I get there? +

We teach near the city centre, inside the old walls and a short walk from Canterbury West with its high-speed line to London St Pancras. Driving, the Whitefriars multi-storey is the nearest car park — check its closing time before an evening class.

Will the footwork annoy my downstairs neighbours if I practise? +

It can — zapateado is genuinely percussive. Most learners practise on a hard floor at home in short bursts or save the loud drilling for class, where the floor is built for it and nobody minds the noise.

What ages attend? +

Adults from about 17 to 75. Flamenco rewards patience over youth, so the room spans a wide age range and everyone works the same drills at their own pace.

Can you teach a flamenco taster for a group? +

Yes. A one-off flamenco taster is a spirited option for hen parties and group bookings, taught at the same flat rate. Send your numbers and a date and we will arrange it.

How do I book my first session? +

Use the enquiry form on this page to tell us your preferred day, and we will reply within one working day with the venue and time. Beginners are welcome to simply come and try a class.
