Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm the Long Lines
We open with rolls, reaches and controlled stretches that wake the spine, ankles and hips, because jazz asks for length and snap in the very same breath.
Isolations Across the Floor
Head, ribcage, shoulders and hips get moved one at a time until each can fire on its own — that separation is what gives jazz its clean, deliberate edge.
Technique Corner
One staple a week — a pivot turn, a jazz square, a kick-ball-change or a controlled level drop — broken down slowly and drilled until it stops wobbling.
Set the Number
The week's steps are arranged into a short show-style routine with a clear front, so there is always a 'camera' to project towards and a finish to nail.
Full-Out, Then Wind Down
We run the number full-out a few times for the sparkle, then ease everything down with slow stretches so nothing tightens on the walk back.
About Jazz Classes in Bournemouth
Bournemouth has staged variety, musicals and seaside shows for the best part of a century, and the Pavilion on Westover Road — a 1929 Art Deco theatre with a sprung-floor ballroom — is the building that still says it loudest. Our jazz classes in Bournemouth borrow the spirit of that stage tradition, purely as inspiration and with no access or affiliation there, and turn it into an adult class about clean lines, sharp attack and the little flourish that finishes a number.
Jazz has its own technical vocabulary — isolations, pivots, kicks, pas de bourrée, jazz walks, the drop into a level and the snap back up out of it. Pavilion Dance South West, the region's genuine contemporary-dance venue down in the Lower Gardens, sets the professional bar around here; we reference it as the local benchmark, not a partner, and keep our own class firmly on the show-jazz side rather than the contemporary one.
Bournemouth station is about a mile back from the seafront, so it is a bus, a cab or a short walk into the centre — no tram runs in the town. Bring soft jazz shoes or clean trainers and clothes you can stretch in; that is the lot. It is £8 handed over on the day, with no term to join and no card kept on file. If a studio in town does not suit, we take jazz out across Bournemouth and the Dorset coast — Westbourne, Charminster, Southbourne and Pokesdown among them.

Why Choose Jazz in Bournemouth?
Show-Jazz, Not Contemporary
This is the theatrical, upbeat side — attack, focus and a finishing pose — kept distinct from the contemporary work Pavilion Dance South West leads down in the Lower Gardens.
In a Real Variety Town
Bournemouth has staged seaside shows and musicals for generations, and the Pavilion's 1929 stage still frames that. We channel the spirit, without claiming any access to the theatre.
Technique You Keep
Isolations, turns and jazz walks are trained as transferable tools, so the vocabulary carries straight into musicals, commercial or heels work later if you fancy it.
We'll Come to You
No studio nearby? We bring jazz out across the Dorset coast — Westbourne, Southbourne, Charminster and beyond — for groups, socials and private bookings.
Your Jazz Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Lines and Isolations
In the room
The first month is spent teaching the body to move in parts — rib from hip, shoulder from head — and to stand with proper jazz posture.
By the end
You isolate cleanly, hold the stance and link a few basic steps without every count being spelt out.
Turns and Travel
In the room
Pivots, chaîné turns and travelling jazz walks come in, plus your first short routine that crosses the floor rather than staying on the spot.
By the end
You turn without losing your spot and dance a phrase that actually goes somewhere.
Performing a Number
In the room
Routines lengthen and gain dynamics — where to snap, where to sustain, where to breathe — and the focus shifts to projecting out to a front.
By the end
A full show-style number danced with attack and a proper finish, not merely remembered.
Style and Sparkle
In the room
You start colouring the choreography with your own timing and flair, and harder tricks — layouts, sharper kicks, cleaner doubles — get folded in.
By the end
You perform like yourself, with the polish that makes a jazz number read from the back row.
Jazz in Bournemouth FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where in Bournemouth is the jazz class held? +
A studio on the town-centre side, close to the Square and Old Christchurch Road. Bournemouth station sits about a mile inland, so a bus or a short walk brings you in — there is no tram in the town.
How much is a class? +
Eight pounds on the day. There is no upfront block, no membership and no term to commit to — you pay only for the session you attend.
Is this the same as the contemporary classes at Pavilion Dance? +
No. Pavilion Dance South West leads contemporary work in the Lower Gardens and we point to it as the local benchmark. Ours is show-jazz — upbeat, theatrical and finish-focused — and we are an independent class, not connected to them.
Do I need jazz shoes? +
Soft jazz shoes are ideal but not essential to start — clean trainers with a flexible sole are fine for the first few weeks while you decide whether to keep going.
I'm a complete beginner and not very flexible — is that okay? +
Completely. Flexibility is a result of the class, not a requirement for it, and the warm-up is built to open the body gradually. The technique is taught from the ground up every term.
Is jazz good preparation for musicals or heels? +
Very much so. The isolations, turns and sharp timing are the shared backbone of musical-theatre, commercial and heels routines, so the vocabulary transfers straight across.
What's the connection to the Pavilion? +
Only spirit. The Pavilion on Westover Road is a 1929 Art Deco theatre with a long variety and musicals tradition that inspires the show-jazz feel — we have no access to or affiliation with the venue.
Can you teach jazz at our venue? +
Yes — we travel across Bournemouth and the Dorset coast, to Westbourne, Southbourne, Charminster, Pokesdown and more. Add your venue to the enquiry form and we'll sort the details.
Do you run jazz for children and teenagers? +
We do. Under-18s dance in age-banded groups with DBS-checked teachers, kept apart from the adult class. Note the child's age on the enquiry form and we'll place them correctly.
