Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Carriage and Feet
We set the upright Irish posture — arms easy at the sides, weight high on the balls of the feet — and wake the ankles, because everything in soft-shoe starts from a light, ready stance.
The Reel Rhythm
You learn to count and feel the reel, tapping out the basic threes and sevens slowly until the timing settles in the feet rather than the head.
Travelling Steps
Sevens sideways and threes back get joined so you actually move across the floor, first on your own and then mirrored with a partner opposite.
Into a Ceili Set
The steps are placed into a simple group figure — a circle or a two-couple set — so you feel how Irish social dancing weaves people together, which is the whole point of it.
Run It Social, Then Rest
We dance the little set through a few times at a friendly pace with the music up, then stretch the calves and ankles down before you head off.
About Irish Dancing Classes in Bournemouth
Let us be straight from the off — Bournemouth is a genteel Dorset seaside resort, not a city with a big Irish quarter, and there is no long-running competition school on every corner here. Our Irish Dancing classes in Bournemouth are instructor-led and deliberately social: soft-shoe reels and jigs, plus the group ceili sets people genuinely dance at a session, taught for adults who want the lift and the footwork without an exam syllabus.
We keep to the soft-shoe side — light reel shoes rather than the loud hard-shoe hornpipes — because it gets you moving, turning and travelling in a couple of weeks instead of a couple of terms. You learn the upright carriage, the quick low kicks, the sevens and threes that carry you sideways, and how those lock into a ceili set with other people, which is where the real fun of the thing lives.
Because there is no fixed weekly hall to send you to, this works best as a booked session — in a town-centre studio when we have one running, or, far more often, brought to you. We travel across Bournemouth and the Dorset coast: Winton, Charminster, Boscombe, Southbourne, Moordown and Westbourne. It is £8 a head on the day, no term and no card kept. Bournemouth station is about a mile inland, so it is a bus, a taxi or a walk into the centre — no tram runs here.

Why Choose Irish Dancing in Bournemouth?
Soft-Shoe, Not Hard-Shoe
We stick to light reel work rather than the loud hard-shoe hornpipe, so you are moving, turning and travelling within a couple of weeks instead of a couple of terms.
Honest About the Scene
There is no big competition school on every corner in Bournemouth, and we don't pretend otherwise. This is a friendly, instructor-led social class, not a route to a feis.
Built Around Ceili
The joy of Irish dancing is doing it together, so we move quickly to group sets and figures where the footwork actually links up with everyone else in the room.
Brought to Your Coast
With no fixed weekly hall, we come to you across Bournemouth and the Dorset coast — Winton, Boscombe, Southbourne and beyond — for socials, groups and private bookings.
Your Irish Dancing Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Feet and Timing
In the room
The opening month is all about the reel rhythm and a light, high stance — sevens, threes and staying up on the balls of the feet without tension.
By the end
You keep the carriage, count the reel and travel a few steps sideways without staring at your feet.
Linking the Steps
In the room
Individual travelling steps get joined into a short solo sequence, and you start dancing it opposite a partner so the mirroring becomes natural.
By the end
You dance a continuous soft-shoe phrase and hold your line facing someone across from you.
Ceili Figures
In the room
Group figures arrive — circling, casting and swinging through a two- or three-couple set — where timing with the whole room matters as much as your own feet.
By the end
You hold your place in a ceili set and dance the figures through without a caller walking every move.
Lift and Confidence
In the room
The pace lifts, the sets get longer, and lightness and neat crossing of the feet are refined so the dancing looks buoyant rather than busy.
By the end
You dance social ceili sets with genuine lift and could walk into a session and join straight in.
Irish Dancing in Bournemouth FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Is there a regular Irish dancing class in Bournemouth? +
Not a long-running weekly one we'd send you to — Bournemouth is a seaside resort without a big Irish-dance circuit. We run instructor-led sessions on booking and, more often, bring the class to you across the Dorset coast.
What does it cost? +
Eight pounds per person on the day. There's no term to sign up for, no membership and nothing taken in advance — you cover only the session you dance.
Do I need hard shoes? +
No. We teach the soft-shoe side — light reel shoes or even clean trainers to begin — so there's no loud hard-shoe kit to buy while you find out if you enjoy it.
Is this competition Irish dancing? +
No, and we're honest about that. This is social, adult soft-shoe and ceili dancing for the enjoyment of it, not a feis or a grades pathway.
Can you come to our venue or party? +
Yes — that's how it usually works. We travel across Bournemouth and the Dorset coast, to Winton, Charminster, Boscombe, Southbourne and Moordown. Put the venue on the enquiry form.
I've never danced before — will I keep up? +
Easily. The reel timing is taught from a standstill and the steps are layered one at a time, so a room of first-timers is exactly what we plan for.
Do I need a partner? +
Not at all. Ceili dancing pairs and groups people up on the night, so plenty come along on their own and dance the sets with everyone else.
What should I wear? +
Comfortable clothes you can move in and light, flexible shoes. Soft reel shoes are lovely once you're hooked, but they're not needed for your first few sessions.
Do you teach children as well as adults? +
Yes. Under-18s dance in age-banded groups with DBS-checked teachers, separate from the adult session. Add the child's age on the form and we'll match them to the right group.
