Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Stack the Posture

We open by switching the body on and lining it up — isolations through the neck, ribs and hips, then finding the lift that keeps everything looking clean once the harder steps land.

10–25 mins

Travel and Spin

Across-the-floor work now: chassés, pivots, kicks and your first proper crack at spotting. It is the groundwork that reappears later in tap, in commercial, in any routine meant for a stage.

25–40 mins

Assemble a Number

The steps get built into a short jazz piece with bite and clean shapes. We take each shape apart and rehearse it well under tempo, long before it has to keep pace with the track.

40–50 mins

The Small Stuff

We go back over the details that matter — how far a kick lifts, the exact count a turn settles on. Those tiny fixes are what turn a correct move into one an audience actually wants to watch.

50–60 mins

Give It Everything, Then Lengthen Out

One committed run at full speed, then a long, unhurried stretch that steadily hands back the flexibility jazz keeps quietly asking of you.

About Jazz Classes in Newcastle

Look closely at almost any stage routine and jazz is what holds it up — the leaps, the fast turns, the high kicks and sharp isolations that touring musicals, chart numbers and screen dance all quietly borrow. Our jazz dance classes in Newcastle put that kit to practical use, taught a short stroll from the Theatre Royal on Grey Street, the Grade I Victorian house where the big touring shows pull in.

Pick jazz and you are learning the most useful thing we teach, full stop. The spotting, the placement and the strong middle you drill here keep resurfacing — in tap, in commercial, in anything danced in front of people. Newcastle keeps that world close: the Theatre Royal is the RSC's home in the North and a regular touring stop, and over the river The Glasshouse on the Gateshead quays keeps the music flowing. Our floors sit near Grainger Town and out in Ouseburn.

Nobody is going to make you touch your toes on your first night, and there is no expectation that you own jazz shoes or arrive with any training — trainers and a little willingness see you through the early weeks, with real shoes waiting until you are sure. The adult floor runs from teenagers to dancers well past seventy, under-18s have their own graded groups, and a class is £8 — a fair bit less than a stalls ticket at the Theatre Royal.

Why Choose Jazz in Newcastle?

The Skill That Carries Over

Sort your turns, kicks and core in a jazz class and the benefit spills everywhere else — your tap, your commercial and your musical-theatre work all quietly run on the same engine.

Big Stages on Both Banks

Touring musicals roll into the Theatre Royal and The Glasshouse all year, and the dancing inside them is jazz at the root — a craft you are picking up minutes from where the curtain lifts.

Trainers Are Fine to Start

You need no jazz shoes and no earlier training to join. Trainers do the job, the finer points come gradually, and you only buy proper shoes once you are certain jazz has hooked you.

A Solid Base for Young Dancers

Under-18s get their own graded classes with vetted staff. For a child with an eye on the stage, few first styles lay down the timing and control that performance work leans on so early.

Your Jazz Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

The First Weeks

Alignment Before All Else

The Groundwork

It all begins with isolations, posture and a first batch of kicks and pivots. Right now, placement counts for far more than pace or anything flashy.

What to Wear

Close-fitting kit with room to move — joggers or leggings, a fitted top — plus trainers. Jazz shoes stay on the shelf until you know you are in.

Into the Term

Spotting and Joining Up

Cracking the Spot

You drill spotting and tackle your first real turns, then run them through short routines until the technique starts behaving like actual choreography.

Reaching Further

The kicks get bigger, the links between steps smooth out, and a little jazz swagger starts colouring how you hold each shape.

Terms Two and Three

Up on the Stage

Fuller Routines

Longer numbers with light, shade and real expression, danced flat out — the point where clean technique quietly becomes something an audience would watch.

The Carry-Over

You start feeling the jazz underneath your tap and your commercial work as well, doing the exact job we promised it would.

Beyond

Stage-Ready

The Polish

Turns that stay put, lines that carry to the back row, and the stamina to hold a whole number from the first count to the final pose.

Where It Goes

Our showcases and events, or channelling the technique into the theatre and screen work that keeps Newcastle's dancers busy.

Jazz in Newcastle FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

How does jazz differ from contemporary? +

Jazz is the bright, punchy one — born from stage and social dance, full of sharp turns, kicks and swagger. Contemporary flows more and works closer to the floor. If you are after upbeat and outward-facing, jazz is it.

I've never danced and have no jazz shoes — is that fine? +

Completely. Most of the beginner class have never danced, and your usual trainers cover the early weeks. Only think about jazz shoes once you know you are staying — and we will give you the nod when the time is right.

Where do the jazz classes run in Newcastle? +

Partner studios near Grainger Town and over in Ouseburn, with the room confirmed after you book. Central Station and Monument are both a short walk or a quick Metro ride away.

I'm not flexible at all — am I out? +

Not a bit. Your range opens up gradually over the term rather than being demanded on day one, and we top and tail every class with a stretch, so the flexibility you need arrives on its own.

Is this theatre jazz or commercial jazz? +

Mainly stage and show jazz — the crisp lines, kicks and turns of a big theatre number — with a little commercial flavour stirred in. The technique underneath serves either direction you fancy.

What does a class cost here? +

£8 on the door, per session, no membership to sign. Once your nearest studio settles a weekly slot, discounted multi-week blocks sit alongside the pay-as-you-go price.

Does jazz lead anywhere else? +

Loads of places. It underpins musical theatre, commercial routines and plenty of screen work, and with the Theatre Royal touring big shows, keen dancers have somewhere real to aim all that technique.

Is there an age ceiling? +

Not really. The grown-up floor runs from teens to well past seventy, and the class flexes to whatever your body has that night — a steady pace, and a proper warm-up first.

Can my child do jazz in Newcastle? +

Definitely — under-18s learn in separate graded groups with vetted staff. Jazz sets timing and coordination down early, and it makes a fine base for any child drawn to the stage.
