Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0-10 mins

Warm Up to the Beat

We open with a moving warm-up set to the track we are learning, firing up the joints and getting everyone locked to the tempo. It doubles as a first listen, so the rhythm is already under your skin before the choreography starts.

10-20 mins

Isolations and Groove

Next we drill the toolkit — chest and shoulder isolations, a rolling groove, sharp head snaps — the small details that make commercial read as slick rather than stiff. Get these right and the bigger moves fall into place.

20-35 mins

Break the Choreo

We take the routine apart eight counts at a time, teaching the shapes slowly, then adding the accents, the levels and the attitude. Everything is repeated on both sides and looped until the section feels automatic.

35-50 mins

Formations and Facings

Now it looks like a video. We add spacing, entrances and formation changes, work out who hits what and when, and rehearse the transitions so the group moves as one sharp unit instead of a scatter of soloists.

50-60 mins

Full Run and Film

We put the whole thing together and run it full-out a few times to the music, often filming a take so you can see the progress. A proper stretch-down closes the hour and saves your legs for the morning.

About Commercial Classes in Middlesbrough

Commercial is the dance you see behind the pop stars — the tight, camera-ready choreography from music videos, awards-show numbers and tour routines. It borrows the punch of street, the polish of jazz and the flirtation of heels, then fits it all to whatever is high in the charts this month. Expect clean isolations, a bit of swagger, formation changes and combinations that snap on the beat and look every bit as good facing a phone camera as a full crowd.

Middlesbrough knows how to put a tune out — this is the town that gave the world Paul Rodgers' rock roar and the Pemberton brothers of Journey South, and where the late Chris Rea first picked up a slide guitar. That musical streak runs right through the local dance scene: The Loft Studios on Linthorpe Road keeps a busy commercial and street timetable ticking over, and our commercial dance classes in Middlesbrough are built for exactly the crowd that grew up wanting to move like the video. We reference that scene with respect, as inspiration rather than any partnership or endorsement.

You need no experience whatsoever — every routine is taught count by count and layered up slowly, so a first-timer and a returner can share the same track. Wear trainers with a clean sole and gym-style kit you can sweat in, and bring water. Your studio is confirmed when you book, and every drop-in is a flat £8 with nothing to sign and no block to commit to.

Why Choose Commercial in Middlesbrough?

Sharpness and Control

All those isolations and hard-hitting accents train your body to start and stop on a dime. You come away moving with a crispness that reads on camera and carries straight into every other style on the timetable.

Stage-Ready Confidence

Commercial is performed out, at the audience, full of front. Learning to sell a routine rather than just execute it is a confidence that spills well past the studio and into everyday life.

A Real Cardio Hit

A full-out run of a commercial number is a proper workout — heart pounding, legs burning — but you are having far too much fun to notice. It is the gym for people who cannot stand the gym.

Move as a Crew

Nailing the formations and hitting a moment together as a group is a genuine buzz. The class becomes a little crew, and there is nothing like landing a routine in perfect sync with the people beside you.

Your Commercial Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1-3

Getting the Groove

The Basics That Matter

Early weeks focus on isolations, timing and the underlying groove, because sharp fundamentals are what make commercial look expensive. We keep the combos short so you can chase the detail rather than the step count.

Kit and Footwear

Clean-soled trainers and comfy gym kit are ideal, plus water and a towel. Leave outdoor shoes at the door to protect the floor, and come ready to sweat — a full run gets the heart going.

Weeks 4-9

Building Routines

Longer Combinations

The eight-counts start stacking into full sections, and you build the memory and stamina to carry a routine from the first beat to the last drop without your brain tapping out halfway through.

Adding Attitude

We layer performance quality on top of the shapes — the facings, the swagger, the eyeline — so the choreography stops looking like a drill and starts looking like the video it came from.

Weeks 10-16

Camera Ready

Formations and Filming

You work in changing formations, learn how to place yourself for a camera and film full takes back. Seeing yourself on playback sharpens everything and is oddly addictive once you start.

Musicality and Dynamics

We dig into light and shade — where to hit hard, where to float, where to let a move breathe — which is what lifts a routine from technically correct to genuinely eye-catching.

Beyond

Own the Floor

Where It Takes You

Some dancers use commercial as a springboard into heels, street or performance work; plenty just love the weekly hit of learning a fresh routine. Both paths are equally welcome here.

Grab the Group

Commercial makes a brilliant private booking for a birthday or a work do — pick a track everyone knows and we choreograph a shareable routine around it in a single upbeat session.

Commercial in Middlesbrough FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need previous dance experience? +

Not at all. Our commercial classes are built for complete beginners as much as improvers — every routine is broken down count by count and layered slowly, so you are never left behind on your first visit.

What is commercial dance exactly? +

It is the polished, camera-ready choreography you see in music videos and on tour with pop artists — a blend of street, jazz and heels set to current chart tracks. Think sharp isolations, attitude and formations rather than any one strict technique.

What should I wear? +

Comfortable gym-style clothes you can move and sweat in, plus clean-soled trainers for grip and support. Bring water and a small towel — a full run of a routine is a proper workout.

Where in Middlesbrough are classes held? +

In studios around the town centre and the Linthorpe side of Middlesbrough, confirmed when you book. We stay within central Middlesbrough rather than the separate Tees Valley towns like Stockton, Yarm or Redcar.

How much is a class? +

A flat £8 per drop-in session, every time. No membership, no block booking and no contract — you simply pay for the classes you come to and skip the weeks you cannot make.

Is it a good workout? +

Genuinely yes. Running a commercial routine full-out gets your heart rate up and works your whole body, but the fun of learning a video-style number tends to distract you from how hard you are actually working.

Will I have to perform on my own? +

Never unless you want to. Commercial is taught and danced as a group, and while we film full takes to track progress, no one is singled out. You are always part of the crew.

Is there an age limit? +

Our adult sessions run from 17 to 75. Commercial draws a wide range of ages and abilities, and the routines are pitched so everyone in the room can get stuck in at their own level.

Can we book a private group? +

Absolutely. Commercial is a popular choice for birthdays, work socials and hen parties — pick a track your group loves and we will choreograph a shareable routine around it in one lively session.
