Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Warm the Ankles

Tap lives in the ankles and feet, so we loosen them properly, then find a relaxed knee and a light bounce — the source of a clean, easy sound.

10–25 mins

The Core Sounds

Shuffles, ball-changes, flaps and taps drilled slowly. We name each sound as we go so you connect the noise your feet make to the word for it.

25–40 mins

Build a Timestep

We assemble the classic timestep piece by piece — the phrase that has been a rite of passage for tap dancers for a century — until it flows.

40–50 mins

Rhythm & Musicality

Now we play with it: accents, dynamics and dancing to the music instead of over it, so the feet become an instrument rather than just busy.

50–60 mins

Put It in a Combo

A short routine that strings the sounds together, run a few times so it settles, then a gentle stretch for the calves and feet to close.

About Tap Classes in Kent

Tap is the dance where you make the music yourself — feet as a percussion section, turning a wooden floor into a drum. That is also why it is the one style, alongside pole, that we run from studios rather than bringing to any venue: it needs a proper sprung or hard floor that lets the taps ring out, not a carpeted function room that swallows the sound. So our Kent tap classes run from county-town studios — around Maidstone in the middle of the county, a Medway base near Chatham and Rochester, a room by Tunbridge Wells or a floor over towards Ashford and the coast — matched to your nearest town and confirmed on booking.

It is a wonderfully honest dance to learn as an adult because progress is something you can hear. A shuffle either sounds clean or it does not, and when a timestep finally clicks the whole room hears it land. There is no partner to worry about and no one to keep in step with but the music, so tap tends to attract people who want something joyful, sociable and a little bit nostalgic — the sound has a music-hall warmth that suits a county full of old theatres and seaside variety history.

Complete beginners are exactly who these classes are for, and you can borrow or hire tap shoes to begin with rather than buying anything upfront. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a sense of humour for the weeks your feet refuse to cooperate — everyone has them. Why Choose Tap in Kent?

You Are the Band

Tap turns your feet into a percussion instrument, so you make the music rather than just move to it. That instant, audible feedback is deeply satisfying from the very first shuffle.

Proper Floors in County Towns

Tap needs a floor that lets the sound ring, so classes run from studios around Maidstone, the Medway towns, Tunbridge Wells and the coast — matched to your nearest town and confirmed on booking.

Progress You Can Hear

There is no hiding and no guessing in tap — a clean sound is obvious, and so is the week it finally arrives. That honest, measurable feedback keeps beginners hooked.

Sociable and Solo

No partner needed and nobody to hold you back — just you, the music and a friendly room. Tap is one of the most cheerful classes we run, and it shows.

Your Tap Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

First Sounds

What You Learn

Shuffles, taps, flaps and ball-changes, plus a relaxed knee and light ankle. Enough clean sounds to feel the rhythm building under your feet.

How to Turn Up

Comfortable clothes and tap shoes, which you can hire or borrow to start. No partner and no experience needed. Your county-town studio is confirmed on booking.

Months 2–3

Timesteps & Combos

Building Skill

The classic timestep, faster shuffle work and short combinations. Your feet start hitting the sounds you intend rather than the ones that happen by accident.

Finding the Rhythm

You begin to hear how the taps sit inside the music, adding accents and light and shade so a combination sounds musical rather than mechanical.

Months 4–6

Real Musicality

Putting It Together

Longer routines with dynamics and syncopation, dancing with the band in your head. This is where tap turns from steps into genuine rhythm-making.

Growing Confidence

Faster tempos stop scaring you and improvised breaks start to feel possible. You could hold your own in a friendly tap jam or a small performance.

6 months+

Confident Tapper

Going Further

Pull-backs, wings, riffs and trading rhythms with others. The feet become a fluent instrument and the sounds start to feel like your own voice.

What's Next

Some dancers dig into rhythm tap and improvisation, others enjoy the bright Broadway style. Tap also pairs happily with jazz for a fuller stage skill set.

Tap in Kent FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

What is tap dance? +

Tap is a percussive dance where metal plates on the toe and heel of your shoes strike the floor to make rhythm — you are as much a musician as a dancer. It ranges from bright Broadway show style to loose, improvised rhythm tap, and all of it comes back to making clean, musical sounds with your feet.

Do I need experience or a partner to start? +

No to both. Tap is danced solo within a friendly group, so there is nobody to bring, and every class is built for people who have never tapped before. Beginners are the heart of the room, not the exception.

Where in Kent are tap classes held? +

Tap needs a floor that lets the sound ring out, so it runs from county-town studios rather than coming to your venue. Depending on demand that means a studio around Maidstone, a Medway base near Chatham and Rochester, a room by Tunbridge Wells, or a floor towards Ashford and the coast. Give us your nearest town and we confirm the studio on booking.

How much is a tap class in Kent? +

A flat £8 a session, paid as you go. No membership, no joining fee and nothing you are tied into — turn up on the weeks that work for you. Optional multi-week passes will follow once a studio's timetable is set, but the drop-in rate stays the same.

Do I need special shoes? +

Eventually yes, but not on day one — you can hire or borrow tap shoes to begin with and see if it grabs you first. When you are ready to buy, a basic beginner tap shoe is inexpensive, and we are happy to point you toward sensible options.

How do I get to class — is there one Kent station? +

No. Kent has no single arrival station, and it is a big county served by several rail corridors — the Maidstone lines, the North Kent line through Medway, the Tunbridge Wells route and the High Speed line via Ashford International. Because tap is studio-based, choose the room nearest your own town.

Is tap good for fitness and coordination? +

Very. It is light cardio with a serious coordination and memory workout attached, sharpening the link between what you hear and what your feet do. Many people find it improves their sense of rhythm and balance in ways that carry well beyond the class.

What should I wear to tap class? +

Comfortable clothes you can move in and your tap shoes — anything else is up to you. Bring water and a little patience for the weeks your feet seem to have their own ideas; that stage passes for everyone.

Can I book a private lesson or a group session? +

Yes. Private lessons are available by arrangement for anyone who wants to progress faster or prepare for a performance, and we are happy to arrange a one-off session for a group of friends who fancy trying tap together.
