Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Loosen & Line Up
Dynamic stretches, jazz walks and a run of isolations to wake up the hips, ribs and shoulders before we ask them for kicks and turns.
Technique Bank
Jazz squares, ball-changes, chassés, pivots and a first pirouette — the alphabet of the style, taken slowly and repeated until it sticks.
Down the Floor
Travelling sequences corner to corner — walks, turning runs and the set-up for a leap — so the vocabulary starts to move through space.
The Number
A short routine to a show tune, a pop track or a swing number, built up in chunks with the sharp, theatrical attack jazz is known for.
Full Out & Cool Down
One committed run of the piece with everyone going for it, then flexibility work for hamstrings, hips and shoulders.
About Jazz Dance Classes in Kent
Jazz is the most theatrical style in the room — kicks, turns, leaps and sharp isolations pulled straight off Broadway, out of old music videos and the American jazz tradition. It is the technique behind a thousand show numbers, and in Kent it has long lived inside the county's musical-theatre and school-show scene without many doors open to adults starting fresh.
We open one. Kent is a county, not a city, so we do not run a single central jazz studio — we bring adult beginner jazz to the county towns where a group gathers: Maidstone around the East and West stations, Rochester and the Medway towns, and Ashford by the International. County-town halls with a clean, forgiving floor suit jazz well, and the exact room is confirmed when you book.
Established schools such as Rochester School of Dance and Dance Visions in Ashford turn out strong young jazz dancers; our niche is the adult who wants the technique for the first time, or back after years away. Expect real correction on line and turnout, not just choreography. Wear fitted kit you can move in and jazz shoes or bare feet — trainers stay in the bag.

Why Choose Jazz Dance in Kent?
Broadway Technique
You build genuine jazz vocabulary — squares, chassés, pirouettes and clean lines — not just steps thrown over a song.
Sharp & Expressive
Jazz trains attack and dynamics: the difference between marking a move and snapping it. That control carries into every other style.
Travel & Turn
Across-the-floor work builds the turns, leaps and spatial confidence that most beginners never get taught properly.
Lift & Sweat
Kicks, runs and full-out numbers make a genuine cardio session that leaves you buzzing. £8 a class, no contract.
Your Jazz Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
First Steps
Finding your feet
Early weeks build the base — isolations, jazz walks and the feel of moving with a straight, lifted line.

Fitted clothes, jazz shoes or bare feet, water. Turn up to your nearest county-town hub and start.
Building Technique
The vocabulary
Ball-changes, chassés and your first clean pirouette, drilled until they arrive without thinking.

Full numbers
Short routines to theatre, pop or swing, danced with the theatrical sharpness jazz is built on.

Jazz Dance in Kent FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
What is jazz dance? +
Jazz is a high-energy theatrical style built on kicks, turns, leaps, isolations and sharp dynamics, drawn from Broadway, music videos and the American jazz tradition. Our Kent classes teach the technique piece by piece, then set it to real numbers.
Do I need any experience to start in Kent? +
None at all. We begin with isolations and jazz walks and add technique gradually, so a first-timer and a returner can work side by side. Most of our Kent starters have never had a formal jazz lesson.
Where in Kent are the jazz classes held? +
In the county towns where a group forms — we come to you rather than run one central studio. Maidstone, Rochester and the Medway towns, and Ashford are our main jazz hubs, with the exact hall confirmed when you book.
How much does a jazz class cost? +
£8 per session, paid on the day, with no membership and no contract. Once a hub's timetable is regular we will add block-booking options. Registering your interest costs nothing.
What should I wear to jazz? +
Fitted clothes you can move and stretch in, and jazz shoes or bare feet — flat trainers do not slide or turn well. Bring water; jazz is a workout.
Am I too old for jazz? +
No. Our adult classes run 17 to 75 and are built for grown-ups starting or returning. Jazz technique is taught at a sensible pace, and you work to your own range on kicks and turns.
How far will I need to travel in Kent? +
We keep you to a nearby county-town hub — Maidstone East or West, Rochester, Chatham or Ashford International — rather than crossing the county, since Kent journeys can be long. Tell us your town and we find the closest session.
Is jazz different from ballet or contemporary? +
Yes, though it shares roots. Jazz is sharper, more theatrical and syncopated; ballet is its classical grounding and contemporary its fluid cousin. Many dancers in Kent take jazz alongside one of them — the techniques feed each other.
Can I book a private or group jazz session? +
Yes — private coaching and closed group sessions can be arranged at any hub we cover in Kent, ideal for focused technique work or a group wanting their own slot. Send your town and numbers and we will quote.
