Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
At The Barre
Pliés, tendus and relevés using a barre or a sturdy chair back, waking the legs and setting your alignment before any weight goes onto one foot.
Centre & Port De Bras
Moving away from support for slow adage, balances and arm work that quietly builds the deep core strength posture depends on.
Across The Floor
Travelling steps — chassés, pas de bourrée and turn preparations — carried the length of the room to grow coordination and a sense of space.
Allegro
Small jumps first, then a little elevation — sautés and assemblés — teaching the legs to spring and land softly in time with the music.
Stretch & Révérence
A long, kind stretch for turnout, hips and hamstrings, closing with the traditional révérence — the little bow that ends every ballet class.
About Ballet Classes in Kent
Ballet is the grammar underneath almost every other dance form — a few centuries of refinement into precision, turnout and controlled, musical movement. Our adult ballet sessions build classical technique from structured barre and centre work, developing the strength, mobility and posture that quietly improve everything else you do. It is written for grown-up bodies and grown-up beginners, whether you danced as a child and want to find it again or have never once put on a soft slipper.
There is a genuine classical thread running through Kent. Names like Lenham Ballet School, the Southborough School of Dance near Tunbridge Wells and Ashford's Dance Visions have kept classwork alive across the county for years — but, as almost everywhere, most of that provision is aimed at children or asks for prior training. A relaxed, structured adult beginner class is harder to find. Because Dance Centre UK teaches across Kent on a come-to-you basis, we can set that class up in the town nearest you rather than expecting you to drive across the county for it.
You need no experience, no flexibility and no particular shape to start. The teacher takes every exercise back to its foundation, corrects alignment person by person and adds difficulty only when the room is ready. Dress is unfussy — soft ballet slippers are ideal, but clean socks and fitted kit your teacher can read your line through are perfectly fine for the first few weeks.

Why Choose Ballet in Kent?
Undo The Desk Slump
Barre and centre work are aimed straight at the rounded shoulders and shortened hips a working week leaves behind, lengthening the spine and opening the chest.
Strength Without A Gym
Long, lean muscle built by working against your own body weight — no machines, no bulk, just control you can feel within a few weeks.
In Your Part Of Kent
Maidstone, the Medway towns, Tunbridge Wells, Ashford or the coast — the class comes to a venue near you instead of the county coming to one hall.
A Quiet Head
The concentration a barre demands leaves no room for the to-do list. Most people walk out calmer than they walked in — a moving kind of stillness.
Your Ballet Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Finding The Positions
What You'll Cover
First through fifth position, the shape of a plié, tendu and relevé, and the vocabulary that names them. Early weeks are about your feet and your posture, not tricks.
What To Wear
Soft ballet slippers or clean socks, fitted leggings and a top the teacher can see your alignment through. Nothing dressy — comfort and a clear line matter most.
Leaving The Barre
What You'll Cover
Port de bras, gentle adage and the first preparations for a pirouette, taken into the centre where you balance without the barre to lean on.
How It Feels
Wobblier and then steadier. Turnout, placement and where your weight actually sits become things you notice and can start to control on purpose.
Travelling & Turning
What You'll Cover
Across-the-floor combinations, a first clean quarter and half turn, and small allegro jumps stitched to the music rather than counted out mechanically.
Where You'll Notice It
Off the floor — climbing the stairs, carrying shopping across Maidstone, standing on a Southeastern platform — your posture and balance quietly change.
Dancing, Not Just Exercising
What You'll Cover
Longer centre sequences, softer transitions and genuine musical phrasing — the point where a string of steps starts to read as a piece of dancing.
Where It Takes You
A steady weekly practice you look forward to, a body that moves better everywhere else, and the confidence to try other styles from the same classical base.
Ballet in Kent FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
I'm an adult beginner — is this class really for me? +
Completely. It is built for adult bodies and adult beginners, from people returning after childhood lessons to those who have never taken a ballet class. Every exercise is broken down from the basics and layered gradually.
Do I need to be flexible or a certain body type? +
No. Flexibility is something ballet builds, not something you need beforehand, and there is no ideal shape to start. The teacher corrects alignment individually and works with the body in front of them.
Where in Kent do the classes run? +
Across the county on a come-to-you basis — Maidstone and the Weald, the Medway towns of Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham, Tunbridge Wells, Ashford, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and the coast. We place the class in the town nearest your group.
Is there one central Kent ballet studio? +
No. Kent is a large county with several separate rail corridors and no single arrival point, so rather than run one hall for everyone we confirm a room near you once you tell us your base and nearest station.
What does a class cost? +
A drop-in session is a flat £8 per person, paid on the day, with no contract, no audition and no joining fee. You come when it suits you.
What should I wear to my first class? +
Soft ballet slippers if you have them, or clean socks if not, plus fitted leggings and a top your teacher can see your alignment through. Bring water. There is no formal dress code to begin.
How is this different from the children's schools in Kent? +
Long-standing county schools such as Lenham Ballet School, Southborough School of Dance and Ashford's Dance Visions largely teach children and graded work. Our session is a relaxed adult beginner class with no exams and no prior experience assumed.
Will ballet help my posture and back? +
That is one of the most common reasons adults start. The barre and centre work directly target the rounded shoulders and tight hips of desk life, lengthening the spine and rebuilding the deep muscles that hold you upright.
How far will I need to travel? +
As little as possible. The whole reason we come to your part of Kent is to spare you the long cross-county drive that a single central studio would force on everyone living the other end of the county.
